Chapter 22: Pressure Resistance

  Chapter 22: Pressure Resistance

The Sub-Core’s soft, radiant glow filled the darkened, submerged cavern. It pulsed rhythmically, almost as if it were alive, responding to their presence. The team stood just a few feet from the energy anomaly, their breath shallow beneath the heat of the boiling waters that surrounded them. Every movement seemed amplified in this high-pressure environment—the weight of the world’s decay pressing down on them.

“Do you feel that?” Mike’s voice cut through the silence. He stood closest to the Sub-Core, his helmet reflecting the strange glow emanating from it.

Adrian felt it too—a sensation like an electric charge running through the air. It wasn’t just the energy of the Sub-Core. It was something deeper, more dangerous. The System was reacting, shifting under their feet, adapting. It always adapted.

“We need to secure this,” Adrian said, his voice steady. “If we don’t, it’s going to destabilize the Nodes and make the System’s recalibration even worse. We don’t know what this thing can do, but it’s too important to leave behind.”

Sarah, who had been silently analyzing the data on her device, looked up with a serious expression. “The energy reading from the Sub-Core is off the charts. It’s drawing power from the deeper layers of the System. If we’re not careful, it could send us into a full-system shutdown. We need to disable the power siphon before we take it.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “How do we do that?”

Sarah’s fingers quickly tapped through her device, bringing up the available options from the System shop. “We’ll need environmental adaptations to handle the pressure down here. The water’s too hot, and the weight of the deep tunnels could crush us if we don’t take precautions.”

Eva, who had been standing silently by Adrian, looked up. Her face was pale, but there was a resolve in her eyes. “If we can stop the siphon, we’ll stabilize the energy. But I’ll need time to work. I can help guide the energy back, but it will take everything I have.”

Adrian nodded. “We’ll give you the time you need.”

Mike cracked his knuckles, clearly eager to get started. “What’s the plan, then? We’re just going to stand around and hope this place doesn’t collapse on us?”

“No,” Adrian replied, a spark of determination igniting in his chest. “We’re going to fight our way through. The moment we make a move, we’ll be swarmed. We need to secure the Sub-Core, neutralize any threats, and get out as quickly as possible. We don’t have time to waste.”

Sarah glanced at her device again. “I’m buying us the ‘Pressure Resistance’ and ‘Heat Resistance’ from the System shop. It’ll make it easier to move through the boiling water and withstand the crushing depths.”

Adrian motioned to the rest of the team. “Everyone, get ready. This is going to get rough.”

The team readied themselves, checking their suits and equipment one last time. The environmental suits they had purchased earlier now shimmered with the added resistance to heat and pressure, the cooling systems humming faintly in their backs. Adrian’s mind was set—there was no turning back now.

“Sarah, activate the power siphon,” Adrian ordered. “We move on my mark.”

With a few quick taps, Sarah activated the command. The Sub-Core began to hum louder, the pulsing energy becoming more intense as the siphon began working in full force. Adrian could feel the resonance in the air shift, the power of the Sub-Core reverberating through the cavern.

“Let’s go,” Adrian said, stepping forward, leading the team toward the Core. As they neared it, the water seemed to grow even hotter, the pressure increasing with each step.

  ---

The deeper they ventured into the flooded tunnel, the more oppressive the water became. The heat was unbearable at first, the rising steam making it difficult to see through the mist. But the environmental suits were holding up. Adrian could feel the added protection kicking in as they moved closer to the Sub-Core, the grip of the boiling water lessening with each step.

However, the pressure was a different matter.

Every few seconds, a tremor shook the ground, sending waves of water crashing against them. It felt like the entire tunnel system was under threat of collapsing. The air seemed to thrum with a low-frequency hum—something alive, something powerful.

Mike was the first to notice it. “We’re not alone.”

From the shadows of the submerged tunnels, an enormous shape rose, its body sleek and serpentine. Its scales glistened in the dim light, and its eyes burned with an unnatural yellow glow. It was the Aswang Eel—a mutated creature that had thrived in the boiling depths of Mandaue’s flooded ruins.

Without warning, the creature lunged, its body writhing through the water like an enormous eel. Mike barely had time to react as its massive, jagged mouth opened, revealing rows of sharp teeth capable of ripping through anything in their path.

“Get down!” Adrian shouted, using his gravity manipulation to force the creature’s body downward. The eel flailed, its massive form crashing into the submerged rocks, but it wasn’t done. It whipped its tail back with terrifying speed, sending a shockwave through the water.

“Mike, hold it!” Adrian shouted as the creature thrashed. “Don’t let it get any closer!”

Mike was already moving, diving into the water and using his immense strength to try and hold the creature’s jaws open, keeping it from snapping down on them. He gritted his teeth, muscles straining against the beast’s overwhelming force. “It’s too strong, Adrian!”

Eva was already preparing her Pure Radiation, stepping forward with determination. “I’ll try to burn it! Just hold it still!”

  Adrian nodded. “Now, Eva!”

Eva raised her arms high above her head, a brilliant light flaring from her hands. The energy poured into the water, creating a beacon of radiant light that swept over the creature. The Aswang Eel shrieked in pain, its body writhing as the radiation burned away the corruption eating at its form.

The eel, disoriented and weakened, thrashed once more, but this time, Mike was ready. With a final, decisive movement, he pushed the creature to the ground with all his might, forcing it to collapse beneath him.

Adrian didn’t wait. He collapsed the tunnel ceiling above the creature, sending debris crashing down onto it. The Aswang Eel screeched in fury, but it was trapped beneath the weight of the falling rocks. The water, once churning with chaos, began to settle.

“That should hold it,” Mike grunted, panting heavily.

Adrian checked his device. "We don’t have time to waste. The siphon’s still active. Let’s get to the Sub-Core."

They moved toward the Core, the water growing thicker and more unstable as they neared the glowing energy. Adrian could feel the resonance in the air, growing stronger as they reached the Sub-Core. It was pulling on the energy from the System, amplifying it with an intensity they hadn’t encountered before.

The pressure was beginning to build again.

“We need to stabilize the energy,” Sarah said, her voice urgent. “The longer we stay here, the more unstable the system becomes.”

Adrian nodded. “Start the process. We’ll cover you.”

Sarah moved forward, her hands flying over the interface on her device. She tapped into the core’s power grid, manipulating the energy to stabilize the resonance and redirect it toward a more controlled channel.

As Sarah worked, Adrian and the team formed a protective perimeter around her. The water around them began to churn again, but this time, it wasn’t from the creatures lurking beneath. It was the system itself, responding to their interference.

  “Almost done!” Sarah shouted.

A low rumble shook the water, and Adrian felt a jolt of panic. “Hurry, Sarah!”

Just as the water surged violently, Sarah gave the final command, and the energy around them stabilized. The hum of the Sub-Core softened, its glow now steady and controlled.

“Done,” Sarah said, wiping her brow. “The Sub-Core is stable. The siphon’s been neutralized.”

Adrian exhaled deeply, his muscles aching from the strain. They had done it. The first Sub-Core was secure.

“Let’s move out,” he said. “The next challenge is waiting for us.”

  ---

The team made their way back to the surface, the boiling water no longer threatening them. But Adrian knew that while this victory was significant, it was only the first step in a much larger battle. The System had only begun to react to their interference.

  They were far from finished.
