Chapter 21: Submerged Secrets

  Chapter 21: Submerged Secrets

The air was thick with humidity as the team made their way toward the flooded ruins of Mandaue’s subway system. It had been weeks since Sarah had detected the first Sub-Core’s location, but the journey to reach it had been anything but straightforward. The tunnels beneath the city had once been bustling with life, a critical part of Mandaue’s infrastructure. Now, they were nothing more than a decaying labyrinth, filled with danger and ancient secrets.

Sarah had mapped out the location of the Sub-Core with pinpoint accuracy, her device tracking the faint traces of energy coming from deep within the submerged tunnels. The Sub-Core was essential for their mission—it was one of the seven anchors that would allow them to stabilize the Nodes and ultimately control the power of the System itself. But it wasn’t going to be easy. The Core was buried deep beneath the boiling water level, and the tunnels were fraught with dangers that even the System had failed to fully control.

Adrian, Mike, Sarah, and Eva stood at the entrance to the decrepit subway system, the damp, foul smell of the water wafting up from the depths. The temperature was suffocating, and the sound of water sloshing against concrete echoed in the darkness.

“Alright,” Adrian said, his voice low but firm. “We’re going in. We get the Sub-Core, and we get out. This is a high-risk operation, but it’s our only shot at securing the energy we need.”

Mike cracked his knuckles and looked into the dark abyss of the subway tunnels. “This place is a mess. How deep are we talking about, Sarah?”

Sarah adjusted her device, her eyes flicking over the readings. “The Sub-Core is located deep beneath the boiling water level. We’re talking about at least a few kilometers of submerged tunnels. The water itself is dangerously hot, and there’s no way to know how stable the structure is down there.”

Eva stepped forward, her face serious. “We can’t afford to waste time. If we don’t get to that Sub-Core, we’re risking everything. The longer we wait, the more the System adapts.”

Adrian nodded in agreement. “We’ll need to move quickly. Sarah, do you have a way to protect us from the boiling water? The heat will be unbearable without some kind of adaptation.”

Sarah paused, tapping her device as her eyes scanned through available options in the System’s shop. “We’ll need something from the System’s environmental adaptation category. Mana Crystals should be enough to buy us some environmental protections.”

Adrian pulled out a small pouch of Mana Crystals, weighing them in his hand. “Do it. We’ll need to stay cool if we’re going to make it to the Sub-Core without getting fried.”

Sarah began scanning the available options, her fingers flying over the device. “I’m purchasing the ‘Heat Resistance’ and ‘Pressure Tolerance’ adaptations. They should keep us safe from the boiling water and the high-pressure environment.”

A brief flash of light lit up the area as the System granted Sarah’s request. She handed the team the environmental suits that would protect them as they made their way deeper into the flooded tunnels.

“Suit up,” Sarah instructed, her voice more focused than ever.

The team donned the suits, which were equipped with internal cooling systems to regulate body temperature and reinforced seals to protect them from the intense pressure below. The suits were bulky and cumbersome, but they would give them the edge they needed to survive the harsh conditions. Once they were ready, Adrian gave a firm nod.

  “Let’s move out.”

  ---

The subway tunnels were as ominous as they had imagined. The walls were cracked and covered in moss, the remnants of a forgotten world. The water level was high, but the team pressed forward, their environmental suits working to keep them cool despite the oppressive heat. The constant sound of dripping water echoed through the tunnels, and every now and then, a faint rumble shook the ground beneath them.

The deeper they went, the more they could feel the temperature rising, the air thick with moisture. The path ahead seemed endless, the narrow tunnels twisting and turning as if designed to disorient and trap anyone who dared to venture into their depths.

“This place is a nightmare,” Mike muttered, his voice muffled by the suit’s helmet. “I can’t believe they used to run trains through here.”

Adrian glanced at him, his face set in determination. “Focus. We’re almost there. The Sub-Core is just ahead.”

Suddenly, the ground beneath them trembled again, stronger this time. Adrian’s hand shot out, steadying himself against the shaking tunnel walls. A low growl reverberated from somewhere deep in the dark, followed by a strange, wet slithering sound. Adrian’s senses went on high alert. He could feel something—no, someone—moving beneath them.

“Get ready,” Adrian whispered, his grip tightening on his weapon. “We’re not alone down here.”

A split second later, a massive shadow surged from the water, its body slithering like an eel but with the menacing, humanoid features of an Aswang. Its head was long and serpentine, covered in slick, slimy scales, with glowing yellow eyes that pierced the darkness. It was the Aswang Eel, a mutated creature that had adapted to the underground, thriving in the boiling water below.

The Aswang Eel let out a deafening screech, and in an instant, it lunged at them, its mouth opening wide to reveal rows of razor-sharp teeth. Mike, always quick on his feet, met the creature head-on, using his brute strength to grapple with the eel, trying to keep its jaws from snapping shut around him.

“Mike, hold it!” Adrian shouted, moving forward with purpose.

Mike grunted as he wrestled with the creature, the Aswang Eel’s massive body thrashing around. “It’s too strong! I can’t hold it for long!”

Adrian acted quickly. He raised his hand, manipulating the gravity around the eel, but it was proving harder than usual. The creature’s slimy, slippery body made it difficult to maintain control.

“Eva, we need you!” Adrian called.

Eva stepped forward, her hands glowing with radiant energy. She concentrated for a moment, then extended her arms, releasing a burst of light that illuminated the entire tunnel. The radiance burned through the eel’s corrupted form, causing it to writhe in pain. But the creature wasn’t done yet.

Adrian knew what had to be done. He used his gravity manipulation again, this time causing the ceiling above to cave in, sending rocks and debris down onto the Aswang Eel. The creature screeched in fury, its body contorting under the weight of the collapsing tunnel, until it finally stopped moving, pinned beneath the rubble.

Mike exhaled sharply, wiping the sweat from his brow. “That was too close.”

Adrian nodded, his eyes scanning the water, which was now tinged with a sickly glow from the eel’s blood. "We can't afford to get distracted. The Sub-Core’s ahead. Let's keep moving."

  ---

The team pressed on, finally reaching the heart of the submerged tunnels. The energy readings Sarah had been tracking were growing stronger, pulsing with power. They had made it.

In front of them, embedded deep within the rock, was the Sub-Core—glowing with a soft, otherworldly light, surrounded by an energy field that hummed with potential. The water here was deeper, the heat unbearable, but the team had made it. The Sub-Core was within reach.

Adrian’s eyes flickered between the Core and his team. “This is it. We need to secure the Sub-Core and get out of here before more creatures come for us.”

Sarah moved forward, her device analyzing the energy signatures. “It’s stable, but I’m picking up something strange. There’s a resonance frequency attached to the Core. It’s… linked to the System’s deeper layers. This is more than just energy.”

Adrian’s gaze hardened. “Then we need to take it now. No more waiting.”

The team moved toward the Sub-Core, ready to claim it and use its power to stabilize the Nodes. But as Adrian reached out to touch it, the hum of the Core grew louder, vibrating with an intensity he hadn’t expected.

The resonance was shifting, and the true power of the Sub-Core was about to reveal itself.
