Chapter 23: The Aswang Eel
The dark, narrow tunnels of the Mandaue Subway system seemed to stretch on endlessly. The team had secured the first Sub-Core, but Adrian knew this victory was fleeting. Every moment spent in the depths of these ruins made it clearer that the System would continue to test them. What they had just faced—the boiling waters, the pressure, the submerged horrors—was just the beginning. The true danger, the true challenge, lay deeper within.
The faint glow of the Sub-Core still lingered in Adrian’s mind as the team made their way through the flooded tunnels, their path lit only by their environmental suits and the dim, sickly light reflecting off the water. The heat from the boiling water had settled, but the pressure continued to push in on them from all sides. Every step they took seemed to reverberate through the dark, making the tunnels feel even more claustrophobic.
"We’re almost there," Sarah said, glancing at her device. Her fingers tapped quickly across the screen, tracking the energy signature of the next source of power—the second Sub-Core.
Adrian glanced at her, trying to mask his own fatigue. The team had just faced down one of the deadliest threats this world had to offer, and though they had been victorious, the toll on their bodies and minds was evident. But they couldn’t rest—not yet. The journey ahead promised more danger than they could afford to underestimate.
"Stay alert," Adrian ordered, his voice low but steady. "If we’re not careful, we’ll be walking straight into another fight."
Mike grunted in agreement, his eyes scanning the narrow passageways. His weapon was slung across his back, but the readiness in his posture was palpable. "You think we’re going to run into more of those mutated Aswangs down here?"
Adrian nodded. "The deeper we go, the worse the corruption. The System isn’t just changing; it’s evolving. We can expect worse things as we get closer to the next Sub-Core."
They pressed on, moving swiftly yet cautiously, until a deep, guttural rumble echoed through the submerged tunnels. It was faint at first, almost imperceptible, but it grew louder, vibrating the very ground beneath their feet.
“Did you hear that?” Mike asked, his posture tensing as he gripped his weapon.
Adrian raised a hand, signaling for the team to stop. “Something’s coming.”
The rumble turned into a series of quick, slithering sounds. The water around them began to churn, bubbling up from the depths, and Adrian’s instincts screamed that something was wrong.
"Stay together!" Adrian shouted.

Before they could react, the water erupted in a violent spray. A massive, serpent-like shape shot up from the murky depths, its long, slimy body writhing in the air, revealing the grotesque form of the Aswang Eel. Its mouth opened wide, revealing rows of sharp, jagged teeth that seemed to glimmer in the dim light.
The Aswang Eel was unlike anything they had encountered before. Its body was covered in a slick, iridescent layer of scales that shimmered like oil in water. The creature’s body seemed to stretch endlessly, its form twisting and contorting as it launched itself toward them with terrifying speed.
Mike reacted first, charging toward the creature and trying to intercept it. "Get back!" he shouted, leaping toward the eel’s head.
But the creature’s jaws snapped open, aiming straight for Mike. The force of the strike sent him skidding back into the water. The eel wasn’t just fast—it was relentless, its attacks fueled by an otherworldly force.
“Eva, get ready!” Adrian yelled, his hand glowing with the Genesis Ring’s power as he manipulated the gravity in the room. The pressure on the eel increased, its body flailing as it was pinned against the walls of the tunnel.
But the eel wasn’t done. It let out a deafening screech, its thrashing body sending shockwaves through the water. Adrian gritted his teeth, fighting to hold the creature in place.
Eva stepped forward, her hands glowing with intense, radiant energy. "I can’t hold it forever. We need to end this!"
Adrian’s eyes locked onto the eel, calculating his next move. "Mike, hold its mouth open! Eva, you need to burn it!"
Mike didn’t hesitate. With a burst of strength, he lunged at the eel’s massive jaw, forcing it open with all his might. The creature screeched, twisting and thrashing beneath him, but Mike kept his grip tight.
Eva raised her hands, her radiant energy flaring to life. The beam of light shot forward, bathing the eel in searing radiation. The creature howled in agony, its body writhing as the light began to burn away the corruption. But the eel was still alive, still trying to break free.
“Adrian, do it!” Eva shouted, her voice strained as the energy drained from her.
Adrian nodded, and with a surge of power, he collapsed the ceiling above them, sending rocks and debris crashing down onto the Aswang Eel. The creature’s body was trapped beneath the rubble, its screeches muffled by the weight pressing down on it.
Mike, panting and covered in slime, stood up, wiping sweat from his forehead. “That was too damn close.”
Adrian exhaled, his heart still racing. “We’re not done yet. We need to secure the path to the Sub-Core. Let’s keep moving.”

The team moved swiftly through the tunnels, the adrenaline from the battle still coursing through their veins. But there was no time to dwell on their victory. They had a mission to complete.
Sarah’s device pinged with a new alert. “We’re getting close. The energy signature is just ahead.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed as they neared the Sub-Core’s location. The walls of the tunnel seemed to pulse with the energy emanating from it. They could feel it in the air—an overwhelming force, both powerful and dangerous.
“This is it,” Adrian said, his voice steady. “Get ready.”
They reached the heart of the tunnel, where the Sub-Core was embedded deep within the rock. The energy surrounding it crackled with power, and Adrian could sense that it was unlike anything they had encountered before. The system had made this place a fortress, and the Sub-Core itself seemed to be a key piece in the System’s grand design.
But there was no turning back now. This was the moment that could change everything.
“Sarah,” Adrian said, turning to her. “Do your thing.”
Sarah’s fingers flew over her device as she interfaced with the Sub-Core’s energy grid. A low hum filled the air as she accessed the Core’s systems. The lights around them flickered, and the entire tunnel seemed to pulse in response.
“Almost there,” Sarah said, her voice tense. “I need to override the system’s lockdown. This is going to take a few minutes.”
Adrian nodded, glancing over at Mike and Eva. “We hold the line. No distractions.”
As Sarah worked, Adrian could feel the energy in the air grow thicker. It was as though the very walls were closing in, the pressure increasing with each passing second. But they couldn’t afford to stop. They couldn’t afford to fail.
The Sub-Core hummed louder now, its energy resonating through the tunnel. They were getting closer to controlling it, closer to securing it. But Adrian knew that the System would fight back. It always did.
“Stay alert,” he said quietly, his hand never straying far from his weapon. “The real battle is just beginning.”
