Chapter 37: The Weight Of Decisions

Chapter 37: The Weight Of Decisions

The air pressed down with such violent weight that Auri had problems to even just breathe. The stench of ozone filled his nose, sharp and metallic, and the stone beneath him groaned as if buckling under the same force that was currently pressing him down. Every instinct screamed at him to move, to run away, but his muscles refused to answer. Sparks burst uselessly from his cheeks, dissolving into the air, the power absorbed by Zuko's sheer presence.

Yuki was beside him, half-buried in dust, her wings twitching as she tried to rise. Her eyes glowed faintly, fierce and terrified all at once. "A-Auri-!" she wheezed, voice breaking under the pressure.

Zuko’s was still staring at them. The sheer existence of his gaze felt wrong, too vast and too heavy, as if Auri’s tiny spark of life was being measured and found irrelevant. When Zuko spoke again, it was a whisper that still managed to shake the ground. "It’s time you came by for a little talk, old friend."

Auri’s heart stuttered. He didn’t understand, who was Zuko talking to? Him? Someone else? Did the Storm Menace mistake them for someone else?"

Yuki forced herself upright, the tips of her feathers smoking from the energy around them. "We-we’re not your enemies!" she yelled, though her voice barely carried beyond the crushing hum. "We didn’t come here to fight!"

Zuko’s eyes flickered toward her, unblinking, almost amused. "Oh, I know. You wouldn't stand a chance, after all.

Before they could respond to that, a ripple went through the air. A light flared near the edge of the ruined chamber. Soft, lavender-blue, shimmering like ripples on a still pond. And from that light stepped Miu. Her psychic aura pulsed outward in smooth, measured waves, cutting through Zuko’s presence like a calm hand through smoke. Even the pressure that had crushed Auri and Yuki seemed to lessen, if only slightly.

She took one slow look at Zuko, her expression unreadable. "You could tone it down," she said lightly. "They’re already half-dead from the air alone. Not that I care, mind you. But at least get the job done properly before the Divine Laws strike you down."

Zuko tilted his head, faint amusement flickering across his face. "If they are so easily broken, they have no business standing before me. And trust me, the Divine Laws will not touch me for this little. It's not like I could even kill them if I tried, not with my powers hampered like that."

"I did my part," Miu replied, her tone steady but edged. "You asked me to get them here, and I did. Now perhaps you’d care to explain what exactly your plan is to get rid of Auri. Because I doubt you plan to die while doing so."

Zuko regarded her in silence. His voice, when it came again, was calm enough to chill bone. "Patience, Trickster. You’ll have your explanation soon enough. Together with them.

Miu crossed her arms. The faint shimmer of her own type-energy flared, reflecting tiny sparks from the lingering stormlight. "I do not enjoy surprises, Zuko. Not when I’ve risked enough meddling already. You said you’d handle it once they arrived. So how, exactly, do you intend to do that?"

Zuko turned his gaze back toward Auri. The Pikachu felt it like a physical blow, as though invisible claws had dragged across his chest.

"How…" Auri managed through clenched teeth, "…how do you know me?"

Zuko’s expression didn’t change. But something else did. A subtle shift in the type-energy around them, the kind that carried a storm’s promise of ruin. "I have known you far longer than you’ve known yourself."

Auri didn’t understand. He wanted to demand answers, but every breath burned. His limbs trembled from the effort of simply staying conscious.

Yuki, stubborn as ever, spat sparks into the air. "You’re lying!" she snarled. "We’ve never even seen you before-!"

"Silence." The word cracked like thunder. Yuki flinched, beak snapping shut.

He spoke again, voice resonant and slow. "There was once a time when I would have destroyed you the moment you stepped foot here, damn the consequences. Now… now I think I’d rather talk."

Auri barely caught the last word before Miu’s sharp tone cut in again.

"Talk?" she repeated, incredulous. "That’s what this is? You had me risk my very being just for a talk!? We had a deal!"

Zuko turned his gaze toward her, unamused but not hostile. "You still measure worth by immediate gain, Miu. That is a flaw you really should work on rectifying."

Her eyes flashed. "And you still talk like you’re above the rest of us!"

"Perhaps," Zuko murmured, "because I remember what 'above' once meant. I am more than just a Mythical. I am a Lesser Legendary. Perhaps, Miu, you would do good to remember that." For a moment, their gazes locked, stormlight against psychic shimmer, lightning against trickery. Neither spoke, but the tension that rippled through the space was nearly tangible.

Finally, Zuko turned away. "You will understand soon. Do not worry, I'll keep my part of the deal. But first…" His voice trailed into something lower, older. "…Bring in our other guest."

Miu blinked, caught off guard for once. "Other-?"

Then her expression sharpened, realizing what the Storm Menace was talking about. She sighed. "Fine. I don't know why you even wantd her here as well, but if it speeds this entire farce up, sure."

Without another word, her body dissolved into particles of pale light. The air stilled for a heartbeat, and then she was gone.

Silence returned, heavy and absolute. The only sound was the crackle of faint electricity where Auri’s cheek sparked against the floor. Zuko didn’t move. Didn’t need to. His presence alone filled the cavern like a second atmosphere.

Yuki crawled closer to Auri, voice barely a whisper. "Auri… what is he talking about?"

He shook his head weakly. "I don’t know."

Auri wanted to think. To piece together what was happening, what Zuko meant, who he thought they were. But every attempt was drowned by the storm in his head, the suffocating hum of Zuko's type energy that pressed against his thoughts.

Suddenly Miu floated in again, Myra cautiosly following into the room after her. The Talonflame guard looked half-dead from exhaustion, feathers scorched and bandaged from battle. But her gaze darted immediately to Auri and Yuki, widening in relief. "Yuki! Auri! You're okay!"

Hastily she tried to run towards them but suddenly collapsed on the floor with a groan as well. Miu’s hand glowed faintly as she gestured toward her. "Don’t, Myra. Me surpressing Zuko's presence around you is the only reason you were able to walk in here. That curtesy has now run out. You will listen and you will be quiet, just like Auri and Yuki here. Be a witness, but do not involve yourself."

Myra gritted her teeth but didn't respond, instead directing her gaze towards Zuko who was looking at her with emotionless eyes.

Miu folded her arms again, tail flicking irritably. "There, Zuko. All your players are on the stage. Now start your grand performance before the ceiling collapses. I had to pull some strings to get them here. These include Sia, Vian and Nayru arriving soon."

Zuko chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound like thunder rolling across mountains. "You call it performance," he said, "I call it truth. And I do not fear a ragtag group of Mythicals."

His eyes burned brighter, casting faint ripples of light across the cracked walls. "And you all deserve to hear my story before we continue."

Auri tried to lift his head, just enough to see him clearly. The stormlight flickered, drawing the jagged outline of the legendary’s chained form. Zuko’s voice softened, though it carried no warmth. "You’ve come here seeking answers, haven’t you? Then listen well."

For a long moment, the only sound was the low hum of Zuko's presence. The Storm menace himself just sat in silence, perfectly still, eyes half-lidded as though gazing through centuries rather than at those who stood before him. When Zuko finally spoke, his voice was calm. Smooth. Almost melodic, even. "You should understand," he began, "that I was not always like this."

The very ground shuddered when his gaze shifted, molten gold flickering within those abyssal eyes. Yuki couldn’t even lift her head. Miu stood apart, faintly glowing, her tail flicking once in mild irritation as though waiting for a story she already half-knew. What Myra thought... Auri honestly had no idea.

"The Water Continent," Zuko said, almost reverently. "That was where it began. My home. My throne and realm as well, for that matter. At least parts of it. A realm of rivers so wide they drowned the horizon, and cities that grew upon their backs. We were many back then in a time where the continent was still marked by cooperation between multiple kingdoms." He paused. His tail curled slightly. "And yet even in that abundance, there were those who hungered for more."

The atmosphere darkened. The seal reacted to his emotions, and the air crackled faintly. Auri forced his trembling paws to stay still. "An organization took root in Lively Town, the biggest city of the continent, independent of the many kingdoms of the Legendaries and Mythicals," Zuko continued. "They called themselves the Expedition Society. I'm sure even you know of them in this backwater of a crater."

Zuko snorted. "You probably know them as agroup of explorers. As the organisation that saved our world from destruction at the hands of the Dark Matter. And all that is true. But after they saved the world and achieved peace, they grew greedy. They wanted to take control of the world as their next step. And they started with the Water Continent."

He exhaled through his nostrils, the air rippling like heat. "I opposed them. I was… younger, then. Proud. Perhaps too proud. I rallied the others, not only Legendaries, but all those who believed that life was meant to flow free and unregulated by a single grand authority, all the way down to even just normal Pokemon. But there were truly great ones among them. The Suicune known as the Guardian of the Southern Currents, the Urshifu known as the Martial Master, and many more. Together, we stood against the Expedition Society."

Zuko’s eyes grew distant. His tone softened. "The battles that followed destroyed the continent more than the rule of the Expedition Society ever could. The sky itself broke under our power. But even as we fought, they adapted. They learned. And then… they brought forth their perhaps greates weapons."

Miu tilted her head slightly. "Weapons?" she echoed, as if playing along. "An interesting description. No, they were not weapons. They were monsters pretending to be heroes out of their own free will."

This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work.

Zuko ignored her and continued. "Two young Legendaries, around my strength. Both of them had been known as the saviors of our entire world. The ones that defeated the Dark Matter. They called themselves Noah and Ray. And Noah, as it happens, was a human."

Auri’s breath caught, Noah and Ray... His chest tightened. Could it be? The mentors Sia talked about? The friends of Vian? What were the chances of that? And Noah was a human like he was!? Yuki stirred faintly, her eyes flicking toward him in concern, but she couldn’t move her limbs enough to reach him.

"They were not evil," Zuko said, his tone soft but heavy. "Merely… blind, I believe. Children who believed they served a righteous cause. Together with the Expedition Society’s leader after the last one stepped down, as well as with Vian who you obviously know, they turned the tides of the war."

And that had cleared any doubt in Auri's mind. The Noah and Ray Zuko was talking about... they were the same ones Sia had called her mentors. The same ones Vian had called his friends.

"The Expedition Society's leader was a Jirachi, another Lesser Legendary, close to stepping into the ranks of the Greater Legendaries," Zuko said, narrowing his eyes. "He was also the strategist. The Expedition Society had their own little soldiers, just like we did, but he was the one that understood the soul of battle. When I struck one foe, another slipped behind me. When I crushed one fortress, three more rose elsewhere. Years passed. And in the end, I lost."

The admission came without bitterness, without shame, just truth. Zuko’s claws dug into the earth beneath him, leaving deep furrows. "The last battle took place at a Dungeon known as Coral Verge. My fortress lay in ruins. My army was broken. Noah and Ray came to end me that day. I stood my ground and fought them both. We tore apart everything in the process. But when the Expedition Society’s leader and Vian joined the fight, even I could not withstand them. They forced me into retreat, and the Expedition Society declared victory. All of my allies, other Lesser Legendaries, had already been slain or fled at that point.

Miu gave a small shrug. "So you fled as well."

Zuko’s gaze cut to her. For a heartbeat, the air tightened. "I withdrew," he corrected smoothly. "I could have ended the entire continent that day, had I wished. But I would not become the monster they painted me as. I would not destroy my very home just out of spite. So I left. I crossed the seas to the Mist Continent."

His expression changed then, not anger, not grief, but something older. Something like exhaustion. "You would think that peace awaited me here. That the Mist Continent, of all places, would have welcomed a weary soul who sought nothing more than solitude. Especially after how much damage the Expedition Society did to the Mist Continent. The ancient capital city of Paradise was destroyed by them, after all. But no. To them I was nothing more than a conqueror in exile."

The ground beneath his tail cracked lightly. The aura pressing on Auri intensified, and Yuki gave a low whine. Zuko’s tone grew quieter, almost introspective. "They drove me into the Umbral Abyss. A forbidden place. It was said to be the sanctuary of Lord Noctem, the shadow that watches over Mythicals and the forgotten. I had heard the legends. That Noctem took in all who sought refuge. That he judged not by deed, but by will.”

He let out a humorless chuckle. "That was a lie."

Miu frowned faintly. "Lord Noctem doesn’t take kindly to intruders. That is well-known to all of us. That was dumb on your part."

"I was not an intruder," Zuko growled softly, though even that sounded weary. "I came to him humbly. I sought to live in peace. To lend my strength to his Domain. But he would not listen. He deemed me unworthy and tried to cast me out."

Zuko’s voice lowered, the rhythm of it mesmerizing. "I would not let myself be driven away again. So we fought for years. Neither of us yielded. The Umbral Abyss itself trembled beneath our war."

Auri could almost see it, flashes of light across endless voids, waves breaking against the unseen, two Legendaries locked in endless combat. Zuko’s words painted it vividly in his mind.

"And then," Zuko said softly, "they came again." He closed his eyes. "Noah. Ray. And Vian."

Auri’s fur stood on end. Miu’s ears twitched, but she stayed silent this time.

"They had followed me. Crossed the continents, perhaps the world, to finish what they began. They came not as conquerors, but as executioners. Lord Noctem joined them, for he too wished to see me gone. Four against one. You know how that ended."

He looked down at the seal glowing beneath his claws, faint and pale now under the weight of his voice. "They imprisoned me here. In this pit beneath the world. Two seals to bind me, created by Noah himself. I have remained here ever since for over a century already. The world moved on without me."

After a while, Zuko’s eyes turned to Auri again. "Do you understand now?" he asked softly. "What it means to be cast aside for wanting peace? What it means to lose everything, only to be named the villain of every tale?"

Auri couldn’t answer. He couldn’t even breathe properly. Every instinct screamed at him to stay still, to not provoke whatever ancient wrath this creature held. But beneath that fear, buried deep under the crushing weight of Zuko’s presence, there was something else. A faint flicker of recognition. Of empathy.

He didn’t understand why. But when Zuko spoke of being hunted, of losing his home, of being betrayed by those who should have listened... Something in Auri’s chest ached.

Miu finally broke the silence. "Touching," she said dryly. "But what’s your point, Zuko? You’ve told your little tragedy to me already. Now to them as well. So how do you plan to keep your end of the deal? None of that tells me how you plan to deal with Auri.

Zuko’s eyes narrowed slightly. "What I want," he said, "is justice."

He shifted his gaze back to Auri — and this time, his tone was almost gentle. "But more than that, I want freedom. The storm does not belong in a cage."

He let those words hang in the air, weighty and undeniable. And Auri, trembling, could only stare back, because somewhere in the thunder of Zuko’s voice, he could hear an echo that sounded frighteningly like his own heart.

Then Miu exhaled sharply. "You’re full of dramatics, Zuko," she said, flicking her tail with irritation. "You talk of peace and betrayal as though you’re some tragic hero. Don’t forget you were the cause of the wars you now mourn."

Zuko’s eyes slid to her, unbothered. "And yet you stand beside me," he murmured. "Because you only cae for results."

Her tail stilled. For just a heartbeat, her expression cracked, something like wariness flickering beneath her usual poise. "Don’t turn your words on me," she hissed, stepping forward. "We had an agreement. I did my part, now you finish yours. You promised to deal with him." She gestured toward Auri, her psychic aura flaring like a blade of light. "He cannot give you freedom anyways. These seals were made by Noah. Nothing short of another Lesser Legendary will be able to break them."

"Is that so?" Zuko’s tone was mild, almost curious. "You want me to kill Auri here. But what exactly did I promise you?"

The temperature dropped. A ripple of energy rolled through the room, the full strength of Miu, not surpressed at all. Funnily enough, the pressure on them, now not Zuko's but Miu's, even lessened slightly. "You said you’d kill him!” Miu snapped, her calm fracturing for the first time.

Zuko tilted his head slowly, his eyes glinting like a predator amused by its prey’s defiance. "No. I promised you to make sure he would not destroy the world. A promise that is fairly easy to keep. Even without killing him."

  Miu’s expression twisted. "You dare-!"

"Yes," Zuko interrupted, his voice rising only slightly, but it filled the entire clearing. "I dare. Because I do not answer to you, Trickster. You came to me with a purpose. You sought my aid, my knowledge and I have given it. But now the game has changed."

The tension cracked like a thunderclap. Miu’s eyes burned with psychic light, ready to strike, but Zuko merely raised one clawed hand, in an invite. "Feel free to try," he murmured, almost kindly. "Noah's seal is to strong for you to break, we've already tested that."

"What are you planning, Zuko?" she asked, quieter now but no less sharp. "You can’t make a deal with him. He cannot break the seal either. He will not be able to make you a better deal than I did. And I'm willing to add even more on it if it means you get rid of him. I know you have a way to do that. Just do it and let us be done with that danger! It's not like Auri would free you even if he could!"

Zuko smiled, a slow, dangerous thing that showed no teeth, only confidence. "You think too small," he said. "Of course I can make a deal with him. Because he has exactly what I need to gain my freedom."

His gaze turned back to Auri, and this time, it softened, deceptively so. "You see, little one," he said, "everything that was taken from me was taken by those who feared my strength. Just as something was taken from you for the same reasons."

Auri blinked. "...What do you mean?"

"Don’t pretend you haven’t wondered," Zuko said. "I know that you've lost your memories. But you've retained some things. The way your instincts move faster than your mind. The way you fight, the way you sense, all of it screams of someone who once knew true power. Someone who lived it. And surely you have wondered what your life had been before you landed in the Umbral Abyss."

Auri froze. Because he had wondered. Countless times. No matter how often he'd told himself he didn't need his memories, that he was still Auri even without them. Zuko’s words slid into those cracks like water through stone.

"You are incomplete," Zuko murmured. "Your memories sealed by the Trickster."

Miu’s fur rose instantly, her eyes flaring. "Watch your tongue."

"You sealed his memories," Zuko said, unmoved. "You cut him away from what he was. The power. The truth. Everything." He leaned forward slightly. "Tell me, Trickster, why hide it from him? What are you afraid he’ll remember? We both know that answer. You fear him because he was a human."

Miu’s lips pulled back in a faint snarl. "That’s none of your concern beyond how you can help me get rid of him, Zuko!"

"On the contrary," Zuko said gently. "It is precisely my concern. Because I can offer him what you’ve stolen." That silenced everyone.

"Offer…?" Myra finally spoke for the first time since Zuko's presence had forced her to the ground, her voice tight, wings half-flared. "You’re a prisoner yourself! You can’t offer anything!"

"Can’t I?" Zuko asked, and his voice was almost amused now. "I am chained, yes. But even just the threat of power is sometimes enough."

He turned his gaze toward Miu again. “Tell them, Trickster. Tell them what would happen if I ordered you to unseal Auri's memories. Or rather, what would happen to you should you refuse once I am freed." Miu hesitated, only for a moment, but that was enough. Her silence was an admission.

"You see?" Zuko said softly, his tone triumphant without ever rising. "Even a Mythical wouldn't dare stand in the way of a Lesser Legendary. Because even if I cannot directly act against her, she fears she couldn't survive if I made it my goal to kill her."

He turned back to Auri, voice lowering again, smooth as silk. "I cannot break your seal myself, little one. Psychic-type energy is not mine to touch. But Miu? She holds the key. I can make her use it."

Miu’s voice cracked like lightning. "You have no idea what you’re suggesting! You're risking our entire world!"

"I know exactly what I am suggesting," Zuko said. "A trade. You grant me my freedom, the first seal, and only that. The second one will be unable to keep me contained longer than a few months. Enough time for you to get away from me, if that gives you peace of mind. In return, I ensure that Miu will lift her seal. Slowly but surely your memories will come back to you."

Auri stared at him, heart pounding so hard he thought it might break his ribs. His mind spun. The offer was poison, it had to be. And yet… he wanted it. Desperately.

"Don’t listen to him!" Yuki finally burst out, forcing her trembling body upright. Her voice cracked but carried fire. "He’s lying, Auri! He doesn’t care about you, he just wants out!"

Zuko’s gaze flicked to her, almost pitying. "You think me a liar?" He smiled faintly. "I cannot lie. The Divine Laws would strike me down. Not a single word I've spoken is a lie. Whether you choose to believe is another matter."

"That's the point! You cannot lie! That does not mean you cannot bend the truth or conceal information as long as you don't outright lie!" Yuki snapped.

Zuko’s tail gave a small flick. "You speak true," he admitted, "but even then everything I said will remain true."

Auri’s mouth was dry. "Why me?" he asked, barely above a whisper. "Why offer this to me at all?"

"Because you are the only one who can free me. Your nature as a human gives you the power needed," Zuko said. "On the Water Continent there was once something called Luminous Water, something specifically made to combat the Dark Matter. The seal you see here is the same one that protected the Luminous Water back then. And it has the same weakness. A human can easily break it."

"...That's not all, isn't it?" Auri asked and Zuko nodded.

"Yes, there is another reason. Every time I'm looking at you, I see a younger version of myself." His eyes softened again, voice dipping into that haunting, regal calm. "You, too, were cast aside for things beyond your control. You, too, live chained by the choices of others. I am offering you what no one else will ever give you. The truth."

For a long, trembling second, Auri couldn’t even look at anyone. Yuki’s voice broke softly beside him. "Auri… please don’t. He’s using you."

And yet she sounded uncertain. Because deep down, she knew as well that if Zuko truly forced Miu to undo that seal, it would work. The one thing she feared most might actually happen, Auri remembering everything, changing completely in the process and leaving them all behind.

Myra spoke again, her tone sharp. "Even if he speaks truth, the risk is too great. One seal broken, and his power could-!"

"Still be insufficient to break free by myself for months," Zuko interrupted smoothly. "I seek freedom, not conquest. Do you truly believe I would waste my chance by destroying the one who grants it? Even if I could?"

No one answered. He smiled faintly. "Then let us be honest. You all want the same thing. You want clarity and answers. I merely offer the path toward them."

And that was the final blade. Auri didn’t respond. Couldn’t. His heart thundered, his mind burned, and for the first time, he realized just how deeply he wanted what Zuko offered. Answers. Truth. A way to stop being lost in his own life.

Miu stepped forward, voice shaking with restrained fury. "You won’t manipulate him! I will not let that happen!"

Zuko’s gaze flicked toward her, faint amusement glinting in his eyes. "Then stop me."

And she didn’t. Because she couldn’t.

And Auri? He had a difficult choice to make.
