Chapter 11: A Test Of Strength

Chapter 11: A Test Of Strength

The morning air was crisp and clear, cool enough to bite at the tips of Auri’s ears as he stepped outside. Pale light filtered down from the crater’s rim above, catching on the dew still clinging to the grass around his newly repaired home. A few stray leaves swirled in the breeze as he took a breath and exhaled slowly.

It was quiet. The kind of quiet he was used to, before Yuki, before the village, before everything had started to shift. But today, that silence wasn’t comforting. It was expectant.

He heard her footsteps before he saw her. Yuki rounded the corner with the energy of a Torchic who had very obviously already had breakfast, much unlike him. He had decided to skip breakfast today for... reasons. Yuki's wings flared, eyes bright. "You’re up! I mean, obviously! You’d be kind of doomed if you weren’t!"

Auri gave a dry look. "Morning to you too."

"C’mon, slowpoke!" she said, hopping in place. "Today’s the big day! Your very first village-wide beat-em-up tournament! Well, sparring, but still!"

He raised an eyebrow. "Is it really that big of a deal?"

Yuki gasped dramatically. "Excuse me!? This is huge! This is the attraction of the month each month! The winner gets to go Dungeon-diving with the guards! It’s like a rite of passage! Also, everyone brings snacks."

"…That last part sounds the most appealing to me."

Yuki huffed. "You’re such a weirdo!"

He shrugged. "You already knew that."

"Yes!" she said cheerfully. "Anyway, I hope you’ve been practicing!"

"I have," he said simply. Though he hadn't practiced to become stronger. No, these last few weeks since he joined the other kids in their training, he had practiced to counciously make use of the strength already at his disposal.

  She tilted her head. "Nervous?"

Auri paused, then sighed. He still knew how pointless it would be to lie from last time. "Honestly, yes, I am."

Yuki’s expression softened, just slightly. "You’ll do fine! They’re all strong, sure, but… you’re you, y’know? Calm, sneaky, clever, you’ve got this!"

  "…Thanks."

Yuki clapped her wings together. "Alright! Let’s go already! I wanna get a good seat before all the kids too young to train yet steal the front row again! Oh, and no pressure, but you better win if I already sit this one out, okay?"

"No pressure at all," he deadpanned, following as she turned and started toward the training field. Yuki had decided not to participate this time, and instead pushed him towards participatting, saying he would need the win in the tournament and the following Dungeon-Expedition more then her. Why did she think so? Because Juno had let it slip that his energy storage actually held less type energy then Yuki's and she was now determined to see him 'catch up' so they could be 'of equal strength.' The quickest way to do so was to go into a Dungeon and absorb some of its natural type energy permanently.

The walk towards the tournament's staging area wasn’t far of course, his home was close enough to the training field that he could hear distant voices already, scattered shouts and excited laughter from the open clearing just beyond the gardens. It was livelier than he’d expected. The field had been cleared completely and marked with white chalk lines, and several benches had been dragged over for spectators. Pokemon of all ages were beginning to gather, chatting, snacking, stretching.

He spotted Mina bouncing in place, tail wagging wildly. Neku was crouched in the grass, paws crackling faintly with energy as he warmed up. Lio stood off to the side, eyes closed, breathing slowly and focused. Tama sat beside Ayra near one of the benches, calmly watching the others.

"Look at them all," Yuki whispered beside him. "All fired up and ready to go!"

"You all do this every month?"

"Yep! Sometimes more often if uncle Kaen thinks we’re slacking!" She nudged him. "You’re about to get your first real taste of it!"

Auri was quiet for a moment, gaze scanning the field. Then, he said simply, "I’m ready.”

Yuki grinned. "Good! Then let’s go show them what you’ve got!"

Vira stood near the center of the field, her sharp eyes scanning the crowd like she was counting heads. Zekel, larger and gruffer, stood beside her with his arms crossed, looking like he’d be happy to step into the ring himself if someone backed out. And at the edge, just in front of the bench circle, stood Captain Kaen.

The tall Arcanine raised his head as the chatter quieted. His voice, when he spoke, was not loud, but it carried like fire in dry grass, wtih everyone else stopping whatever they were doing to listen. "Today marks our monthly test of strength," Captain Kaen said. "Not just strength of body, but of focus, determination, and discipline."

"For many of you," he continued, "this is one step along the path toward becoming future guardians of our home. For others, it’s a chance to prove your growth. To learn, to adapt, to better yourselves." He paused. His gaze swept the crowd, then landed, briefly, on Auri. "The winner of today’s matches earns the right to join the guards on the next Dungeon-Expedition. Fight well. Fight fair. And fight with purpose."

A cheer went up, scattered, but spirited. Auri felt a strange thrill in his chest. Beside him, Yuki leaned in. "That sounded so cool! Uncle Kaen always sounds like he’s narrating a history book written by a firestorm!"

  Auri blinked. "…That’s oddly specific."

"Right?" She beamed. "I’ve been saving that line!"

Zekel stepped forward, voice blunt. "Fighters, get up here!"

The crowd shifted as six kids stood, and then two more.

Lio was already focused, paws flexing with calm energy. Mina bounced in place, tail still wagging like mad. Neku offered a cocky grin to no one in particular. Karo swaggered forward like he already knew he’d won something. Velia marched with practiced pride behind him.

Then came Tama, looking hesitant but resolute. Her pale fur glinted in the sunlight as she took her place without a word. And finally Ayra. The Raboot stood a head taller than the rest, arms folded, fire in her stance. A few Pokemon whispered in surprise. Auri was surprised as well. Based on what Yuki had told him, Ayra rarely competed herself.

Zekel looked at them all. "Names! Loud!" They answered, one by one.

  "...Auri."

  "Lio."

  "Neku..."

  "Mina!"

  "Velia."

  "Karo!"

  "...Tama."

  "Ayra."

Zekel grunted. "Bracket’s set." He picked up a chalkboard with rough handwriting, angled toward the crowd. Eight names had been arranged into matchups. Auri leaned in.

  First Round:

  - Auri vs. Karo

  - Lio vs. Neku

  - Mina vs. Velia

  - Tama vs. Ayra

Yuki gasped. "Ayra’s in!? Since when!? She always says it’s boring without someone that can actually properly challange her!"

Ayra smirked across the field. "Guess I got curious about your friend here."

"Wha- You can’t just- That’s cheating! You’re like, older and already once evolved!"

  "Still underage. Still qualified."

Auri watched them bicker, then turned back toward the board. Karo first, huh? He narrowed his eyes slightly. Oh, he would have fun this first fight. While Karo diddial back on his comments these last few weeks, he had by no means stopped. And there never was a chance to truly punish Karo for them either. This would be a wonderful chance to do exactly that,

Still, he knew he hadn’t seen Karo truly fight before, seeing how he always found a way to talk himself out of it until now. But something about that smug grin made him sure it wouldn’t be straightforward. The crowd quieted as both of them stepped into the ring.

Karo, the Skorupi, flashed a wide grin, his claws tapping together with a rhythmic click-click-click. He turned a slow circle toward the crowd like he was soaking in invisible applause. Auri, by contrast, kept his stance low and measured, one paw brushing the edge of the chalk circle to test the feel of the ground.

"Combatants ready?" Vira’s voice rang out from the side.

Karo raised a claw high. "Ready to sting! I'm going to enjoy this!"

Auri gave a simple nod. "Ready."

Vira flicked her tail. "Then begin!"

Karo was fast. He launched forward with surprising agility, zigzagging erratically across the field, not straight at Auri, but at angles, forcing the Pikachu to readjust constantly. His movements weren’t clumsy. They were playful. Controlled chaos.

Auri didn’t move at first. Instead he tracked and started to analyse every darting step, waiting… waiting… And then he struck.

With practiced grace, Auri sidestepped a [Poison Sting] and countered with a quick [Nuzzle]. It was small and not enough to really hurt, but definitely enough to temporarely impair Karo's speed.

"Yowch!" Karo yelped, leaping back with a dramatic spin. "So you do bite back, huh? And here I already thought you were nothing more then a paper mouse!"

"Your pacing’s sloppy," Auri said, circling. "You’re leaving gaps in your defense pretty much everywhere."

This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.

Karo cackled. "That’s the point, sparky!"

And just like that, he dove again, noticeably slower now, spinning beneath Auri’s expected dodge and trying to clip his legs out from under him with [Poison Sting]. Auri jumped, but not high enough. Karo’s tail managed to clip his paw, and he stumbled slightly on the landing. Internally he cursed. He was trying to fight without using his instincts as a crutch, but it was noticeably harder that way.

The crowd made a noise, not gasping, but alert. Yuki leaned forward in the front row. "Don’t let him draw you into his rhythm Auri! You're better than that!"

Auri’s ears flicked. She was right. Karo’s style wasn’t wild by accident, he simply wanted the battlefield messy. Fine by him. Then he had no reason to play clean either.

Karo came in again, faster, reckless now. But Auri didn’t back up. Instead, he met the charge with a [Feint], then abruptly dropped flat into a [Tail Whip]. A [Thunder Shock] arced through the ground as Auri used the proximity to trigger a controlled burst.

All three attacks that Auri had set off rapidly after each other hit and Karo screeched, his legs twitching as the electric-type energy ran through him. He jolted backward, trying to shake it off, but Auri was already moving again. He spun, tail glowing, and slammed it down with [Tail Whip], not at Karo directly, but at the ground beside him, throwing up a cloud of dust and debris.

Karo staggered and Auri abused the opening. Sliding through the haze, he planted both feet, and closed in with [Quick Attack], hitting Karo square in the chest, knocking the wind out of him and sending him rolling.

The crowd went quiet for half a second. Then cheers followed.

Karo groaned from where he lay, legs twitching. "Okay. Ow."

Zekel stepped in. "Match over. Auri wins."

Auri took a deep breath. With him completly forgoing the support of his instincts, this had been harder then expected.

Karo sat up with a glare. "You’re tougher than you look, sparky. But trust me, this will change nothing!"

Auri simply shrugged. "Be a decent Pokemon and I have no reason to involve myself with you at all."

Karo blinked, then shook his head. "You're doing it again. Ordering others around, pretending they are beneath you! No, I will not bow to such a behaviour!"

Auri just sighed and turned around. As he left the ring, Yuki nearly tackled him with praise. "That was amazing! You baited him, and then the [Tail Whip]! Ohhhh he didn’t see that coming at all! You’re, like, two moves ahead of everyone!"

Auri rubbed his cheek, slightly flustered. "It wasn’t that impressive."

"Yes it was! Be proud of what you managed!"

He huffed a laugh. "Well, one round down, at least, that's what I managed."

"And three to go!" Yuki chirped. "Lio’s up next! He looks like he’s going to explode from nerves!"

Sure enough, Lio was stepping toward the ring now, facing Neku, both of them already exchanging tense stares.

Lio’s posture was stiff, his fists clenched, shoulders taut, jaw tight. He stared straight ahead, not at Neku, but at some invisible point beyond him. Neku, by contrast, wore a casual grin, tail flicking back and forth like a cat playing with a spark. His paws crackled faintly with pent-up static as he bounced lightly on his feet, clearly enjoying the attention of the crowd.

  "Combatants ready?" Vira asked.

"Ready," Lio said immediately, without looking up.

  "Yes," Neku agreed.

  Vira swiped her tail. "Begin!"

Neku darted in first with [Quick Attack], fast and sharp like lightning, exactly what one would expect from a Shinx. But it was still just in a straight line and obvious he was trying to hit Lio’s feet.

Lio jumped, not dodging by instinct, but reacting in such perfect rhythm that Auri instantly suspected that Lio had learned some kind of defensive move. The moment Neku missed, he countered with a sharp downward [Metal Claw] that Melu barely rolled away from in time. "Hey! We’re not doing warmups first? Really?" he called over.

“No,” Lio replied flatly, readying his next attack.

"Okay then!" Was all the Shinx said before he moved again, and the match became a dance with constant movement. Neku was flashier, darting around with [Quick Attack] to disorient, from time to time striking with [Thunder Shock], [Bite] or [Spark]. Meanwhile Lio stayed in the center of the ring, pivoting carefully, every step deliberate, dodging when necessary and attacking with [Feint], [Metal Claw], or [Rock Smash] whenever an opportunity arose. By now Auri was sure he was also using [Detect] to spulement his defensive capabilities. The fighting-type energy in his body made that quite clear, though it was impressive how much control Lio had over a move he could've only had for a few weeks at most.

Neku pounced again at Lio and a burst of [Spark] lighted up the field. Lio ducked low, grabbed Neku mid-leap, and used the momentum to slam him into the ground. That had definitly been [Counter]!

"Ow!" Neku hissed, scrambling back, fur puffed. "Okay. No need to get all serious about this."

Lio didn’t respond and Auri watched with narrowed exes. He could see the way Lio, moved clearly far to tense for what should be a casual sparring match.

Neku recovered fast and came in again, this time with a [Bite]. Again Lio caught it with [Counter], one paw pushing against Neku’s snout, forcing it back with sheer strength, and then knocked him aside with a [Rock Smash]. There was a thud as Neku hit the ground.

Zekel stepped forward, but Neku raised a paw. "Wait, wait! I’m still good to go!"

He rolled, shakily, back to his feet. "Alright, Lio," he said, panting now. "Time for the real show."

Lio narrowed his eyes. Neku crouched. A sudden pulse of energy surged from his paws, [Charge] building around him as his fur began to glow faintly. His next attack with electric-type energy would hit significantly harder and it wasn't like Lio came out of his uses of [Counter] completely undamaged either.

Lio, who noted the same, moved in before Neku finished. The Riolu closed in with [Quick Attack] and faked a [Rock Smash]. When Neku tried to dodge, Lio twisted, got behind him, and drove a [Metal Claw] into his back, knocking the air out of him and sending him stumbling into the chalk boundary and over the ring edge before he even got a chance to use his super-charged electric-type move. The match was over.

  "Match over. Lio wins."

Neku let out a breathless wheeze and flopped on his side. "Ughhh. I almost had you…"

Lio didn’t smile. He simply nodded and stepped back, offering Neku a paw. "…You're not that serious normally," Neku muttered as he took it.

Lio’s answer was quiet. "I don’t like failing.”

The Shinx blinked at him, caught off guard. Auri watched the exchange carefully. Something was definitely off with Lio. But before he could continue thinking about that, Vira anounced the next match.

"Velia, Mina, it's your round. Step forward," she said.

Velia walked into the ring with her head high, shoulders squared, the air around her practically buzzing with self-assurance. The way she moved made it clear she expected to win. Her stubby fists were clenched tightly, and her jaw was set.

Mina, meanwhile, padded forward more casually. Her tail wagged, her steps light and bouncy. She wasn’t slouching, but she also wasn’t tense. If anything, she looked like she was here for a good time, not battle. Her only real tell was the glint of focus in her eyes. She might’ve been relaxed, but she wasn’t underestimating her opponent.

Velia cracked her knuckles. "Try not to fall over too quickly, doggy."

Mina blinked. "Why? Are you planning to drag this out? I planned to be quick about making you eat those words!"

Velia snorted. "Not like you stand any chance at following up on your words."

  "Guess we’ll find out!"

Vira raised her voice. "Combatants ready?"

  Both nodded.

  "Begin!"

Velia charged without hesitation, a straight line, a raw [Headbutt]. Mina leapt out of the way at the last second after using [Sand Attack], letting Velia skid past with a frustrated grunt and sand in her eyes.

  "Oh, come on!"

Mina grinned. "Gotta be quicker than that if you want to catch me!"

Velia whipped around and came in again, an [Ice Punch] ready that Mina only barely dodged, ducking under the hit, before countering with a [Rock Throw], which missed as well. In the process, another [Ice Punch] from Velia managed to graze her side and she winced, ears flattening. That hit had hurt.

She backed up quickly, tail low, nose wrinkled. "You hit like a Graveler. Shouldn't have expected something else from a brute like you."

Velia’s eyes narrowed. "Brute!? How about you stop dancing around and fight properly you coward!"

"I am fighting!" Mina bit back, circling now, quick on her paws. "Just smarter than you!"

The Snubbull huffed and stomped the ground. "Smarter would be to just surrender now!"

Mina didn’t reply. Instead, she suddenly lunged forward in a blur of movement, another [Rock Throw] spun from a sharp kick, sending pebbles flying toward Velia’s face. Velia raised her arms instinctively, which was exactly what Mina had wanted.

The moment Velia’s eyes were shielded, Mina darted low and hit her with [Tackle]. The ground hit Velia hard. She scrambled back up, furious, but Mina was already gone, bounced back, tail wagging.

"You dared to [Tackle] me," Velia growled, getting up.

"It’s a valid move!" Mina countered. "Would you prefer I continue using anoying moves like [Sand Attack] and [Double Team] instead?"

"Use anything you want," Velia said, voice suddenly low. "I’m still putting you down!"

She rushed again, but instead of directly attacking she used [Lick]. Velias tongue elongated and caught the shoulder of the surprised Mina hard. The Rockruff yelped and staggered back, but didn't fall. Instead she spun around, still low to the ground, and hit Velia’s leg with a [Bite].

Velia howled and kicked her off, more form surprise then pain, but Mina was already backing off, panting now. The two stared at each other, both tired now, bruised and stubborn. And then they charged, Velia with another [Headbutt], Mina with a [Double Team], followed up by a [Tackle].

Two small blurs collided mid-ring, dust kicking up as limbs and teeth and instincts clashed. It was a blur of fury and grit, no grace left now, only who could hold out longer. They barely even formed their type energy into coherent moves anymore.

In the end, it was Velia who overcommitted against one of Mina's fake [Double Team] copies, allowing Mina to dip under the attack and used the opening to slam a [Rock Throw] directly into the Snubbull’s chest, sending her toppling backward and just far enough for her back to touch the chalk line, ending the match.

Vira raised her voice. "Match over. Mina wins."

The crowd exhaled in surprise. Mina let out a deep breath and smirked down on Velia. "Not all that weak, eh?"

Velia stared at her for a moment, chest rising and falling. "..Nothing but cheap tricks. They won't work next time."

Mina’s smirk sharpened. "Looking forward to stomping you into the ground again!"

"Ayra, Tama, now it's your turn," Vira anounced.

Ayra stepped into the arena like she owned it, confident in her strength. She cracked her knuckles absently, scanning the field with practiced eyes. The Raboot didn’t carry herself like a child. She was more experienced than everyone else here, and planned to get this win.

Tama followed a few steps behind, paws silent against the dust. The mutated Vulpix looked much smaller in comparison, more delicate, her pale fur softly glowing under the sunlight. But her steps were sure, and her gaze steady. She wasn’t nervous, knowing that her friend would never truly hurt her.

Some of the other kids whispered from the sidelines. This wasn’t just any match. The two of them were close, it was a well-known fact. Seeing them fight felt strange for most of the villagers. But the rules were the same for everyone.

  Vira gave a nod. "Ready?"

Ayra offered a sharp smile. "Sure."

Tama simply dipped her head. "I am."

  "Begin!"

Ayra launched forward in a blur of red and gray. No warmup, no banter, closing the distance with a sudden [Quick Attack] that startled even some of the others. Mid-stride she privioted into [Double Kick], trying to sweep Tama’s legs out from under her.

Tama jumped. She wasn’t fast, not compared to Ayra, but she was light. Her leap lifted her barely out of range, and she followed up with a [Powder Snow] burst that caught Ayra directly across the face.

The Raboot flinched, eyes stinging, before flipping backward to get distance. "You learned to time that better," she muttered, shaking frost from her ears.

"You taught me how," Tama replied gently, tail swishing.

  Ayra grinned, despite herself. “Figures.”

Agin she closed in with [Double Kick], but this time visibly faster. Tama deflected the first strike with a thin wall of [Ice Shard], but the second connected with her side, knocking her sideways across the dirt. She rolled once, coughed, then stood again, body trembling but not down.

  Ayra hesitated. "You okay?"

Tama’s breath came in soft puffs of mist. "It’s just a spar."

Ayra exhaled through her nose. "Right."

This time, Ayra didn’t rush, instead slowly circling Tama who mirrored her, ice crystals flickering faintly across her fur. For a moment, neither moved.

Then Ayra flicked a quick [Ember] towards Tama, who surprisingly didn't break her stance. Instead, she sent a sudden [Icy Wind] forward, a chilly blast that slammed the fire backward, dispersing it midair.

  The watching kids actually gasped.

"Did you see that?" Neku whispered, eyes wide.

"She simply canceled the [Ember] out," Lio muttered. "I didn’t know she could do that."

"Me neither," Mina added, tail wagging in surprise.

Back in the ring, Ayra’s eyes narrowed slightly. "You’ve gotten better."

Tama gave her a small, tired smile. "Of course I have. You would've known if you joined these tournaments more often."

And then, Ayra went in ready to end the fight with a [Flame Charge], putting the battle on a timer. It was a known fact that letting your opponent build up [Flame Charges] was a bad idea.

Tama weaved with grace and precision, answering each blow with subtle deflections and bursts of ice, thereby holding her ground for now. But Ayra continued to get faster and faster until, finally, the Vulpix couldn't keep up anymore. A sudden [Quick Attack] of incredible speed threw Tama out of the ring.

Vira raised her paw. "Match over. Ayra wins."

A small cheer rippled through the crowd, even as some of the younger kids looked torn. It had been the expected outcome, seeing how Ayra was just that much stronger than most of them. Still, they had to acknowledge that even the very peaceful Tama would probably have been a challange for them.

Ayra stepped forward, brushing frost off her shoulder. "You okay?"

  Tama nodded. "That was fun."

Ayra snorted. "You’re the only one who calls getting kicked fun."

  "You held back."

"Yeah, but I cannot really go all out if I want to keep things fair, now can I?"

Tama smiled again, and this time, it reached her eyes. "You better win the entire thing for me then."

Ayra just nodded with an easygoing smirk.
