Chapter 40: Psychology of the Unjust Death Hell

Stepping into this layer, the air became viscous and icy.

All around was a dim grayness, obscuring the path. Only countless translucent shadows drifted in the mist, emitting heart-breaking weeping sounds.

  "I died so miserably..."

  "Why me..."

  "I hate..."

The concentration of this negative emotion was too high; even Daoist Singularity's protective talisman began to turn black.

"Big Hero, watch out for inner demons." Singularity clutched his chest, feeling a bit depressed. "The resentment here can trigger the most painful memories in a person's heart..."

  Slayer walked in the mist.

He could certainly sense these emotions. But he didn't feel sadness.

  He only felt Annoyance.

This weeping sound was worse than nails on a chalkboard.

Suddenly, several translucent Banshees with skull faces rushed out of the mist.

  "SCREEEECH————!!!"

Sharp sonic attacks pierced directly into the brain.

  Slayer's movements didn't pause for a second.

  BANG!

The flame spewed from the double-barreled shotgun instantly tore a Banshee apart.

But the surrounding ghosts cried even louder.

"It's useless..." An old ghost with a face full of bloody tears drifted in front of Slayer. "Killing them is useless... as long as our resentment remains, they will keep respawning... our hearts are bitter..."

  Slayer stopped.

He looked at this group of useless wastes who had no fighting spirit and only knew how to cry.

  He hated weaklings the most.

But he hated the things that made them weak even more—Demons.

  Slayer put away his gun.

He walked to the central plaza of this layer. Standing here was a massive "Resentment Stone," the core of energy for this layer.

He glanced at Singularity behind him.

He pointed at the stone, then at the tablet in Singularity's hand.

Singularity paused: "You want me to... play something?"

Slayer didn't answer. He turned and charged toward a gathering army of demons in the distance (there were dozens of Banshees and several Hell Knights).

  Singularity understood.

Slayer was going to perform live.

Singularity immediately flew to the top of the Resentment Stone, plugged his tablet's data cable in, and connected to the holographic projection system of this layer (originally used to replay the miserable deaths of ghosts).

"Everyone! Stop crying! Look here!" Singularity shouted. "Showing you something stress-relieving!"

  Zzzzt—!

A huge holographic screen lit up in the air.

In the picture was Slayer's First-Person Perspective (transmitted via tactical visor).

The ghosts stopped crying, looking up blankly.

On the screen, the green man charged into the demon pile.

  Rip.

He tore open the chest of a Hell Knight with his bare hands.

  Crush.

He stomped a Banshee's head into explosion.

  Execute.

He severed a demon's limbs with his arm blade, then threw them into the abyss like trash.

This wasn't just killing. This was Torture. It was the ultimate revenge against evil.

The ghosts who originally only knew how to cry, watching the demons that once bullied them being crushed like ants on the screen... their eyes changed.

  From sadness, to shock.

  Then to Fanaticism.

"Good! Good kill!" That old ghost suddenly shouted.

"Kill it! Twist its head off!" Another female ghost waved her fist and screamed.

"Yes! Just like that! Let them taste pain too!"

The atmosphere in the plaza changed.

The mist of resentment began to dissipate, replaced by a red, scalding "Rage."

With every roar of Slayer's gun, the cheers of the ghosts grew louder.

  "Rip and Tear!"

  "Rip and Tear!"

Finally, when Slayer used the BFG to blast the last Demon Lord into slag, the entire Unjust Death Hell erupted in earth-shaking applause.

The ghosts no longer felt like victims. They felt like witnesses to an avenger.

Resentment? Gone long ago. Now they only felt Satisfaction.

Slayer walked back to the plaza.

Those ghosts didn't crowd around him crying anymore. Instead, they made way for him like welcoming a hero, and a few ghosts even tried to imitate his walking posture.

Singularity looked at the [Resentment Index] which had just hit zero, and wiped his sweat.

"Psychological counseling? This is practically Violence Therapy."

"Watching him kill demons is indeed more satisfying than reincarnating."

Slayer didn't stay. He didn't like being watched.

He walked straight toward the entrance of the next layer.

  "Resentment vs Venting."

In this cruel world, tears are the most useless things.

  Only Rage can purify everything.

"Next chapter, Thirteenth Layer: Dismemberment Hell (Zhe Xing Di Yu). Demons dismember humans here. Slayer dismembers demons in return. Singularity is on the side... studying demon anatomy?"
