C14 Four Days of Pure Annoyance

“Whelp, it’s time to go to the check-in building.” thought Vegis when he got out of bed. He woke up a little early today to see if there was anything he needed to know before his 10 hour shift that night. Just yesterday, there was a message saying that the pods will be back in motion in 2 more days, so Vegis had to run to the center of the complex. It took just over a minute for him to arrive at the building. The doors were fogged up with bits of the layer of condensation being cleared droplets. Vegis opened the doors and immediately sensed 3 things inside. It was the guard next to the door, the clerk staring into a hole into the desk, and a clone using magic to sweep and mop the floors.

The guard stood up as Vegis walked in as they felt the prickle of magic swipe across their skin. “Holt, may I ask why you are using sensory magic and if you have the proper permission?” (Guard) “Oh, my bad, this is the first time I went anywhere other than the cafeteria and the dorms.”(Vegis) “I see, you must be a new hire. I would recommend you stop using it if you don’t have the right permissions right now. You should be able to get it by sending a request to HR.”(Guard)

Vegis nodded to the guard and walked to the clerk and spoke. “Hi there, I am here to learn if there is anything I need to prepare for my shift tonight”(Vegis) “Okay, what's your name and position.”(Clerk) “I am Vegis Watt. I believe I was put under the position of Clone User.”(Vegis) “Okay, this will take a second.”(Clerk) Vegis waited for the clerk to be done typing out his name and for the Mcomputer to load it. It was chunky and built into the desk. Magic and computing were not exactly easy to fuse. Magic was mostly about imagination and will so it had a hard time replicating the reliability of machines. This made pure magic devices hard to make very complex. Shooting fire balls and lighting, easy, but math was hard.

Time passed and the computer finally got his name pulled up. “Okay, you are scheduled to be in the basement level 30-40. These levels are mainly used in the biological studies of the anomaly.”(Clerk) Vegis nodded and then asked where HR was to which they pointed at the room to the right.

Vegis walked over to the door and saw that the paint was worn down at the bottom of it. He pushed the door and it opened up into a room with 3 people who each had a label on a floating sign above them. The one to the left said permissions and accommodations, the one on the right said problems and reports, and the one in front of them said scheduling and appointments. Vegis went to the one on the left and sat down. “Hi, I would like to request to be able to use a low level detection spell to supplement my sight.”(Vegis) “Okay, tell me your name”(HR rep 1) “I am Vegis Watt”(Vegis) “Okay, this will take a minute” (HR rep1)

There was nothing and staring until the Mcomputer pulled up his file. They scanned it a couple of times and checked in several boxes. They then pulled out a small pin and handed it to Vegis. “This will send an augmented pulse of mana with your detection waves to tell the guards that you can use it.” said the HR representative to which Vegis nodded and walked out. Vegis ran back to the dorm and went to the second story to connect to the clones he was provided.

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

Vegis soon gained 3 more perspectives and had to practice walking at the same time as them. He did this until an hour before his shift and then ran back to the check-in building. He did the mandatory check in process which was a finger print and mana scan. Vegis then walked out and to the elevator that was located in the center of the 4 buildings. He hit level 30 and commanded the clones to run to the basement and to an entrance near level 30.

Vegis returned from his last shifts this week and walked to the park. He made a box that encapsulated him and screamed in pure frustration. He slammed his fist into the walls until it cracked and cut his hands. He then stopped, healed his hand, and walked into the dorm and into his room. Vegis has had a very bad week at work.

Vegis was put mainly on caretaking duty for the captured mutant creatures. Unfortunately, these people don’t care about giving them proper accommodations which means the walls and floors were splattered in all sorts of bodily waste. They were also hyper aggressive against him and tried to attack him when he went in to feed them and clean their cell.

The ones in the underground were either the ones that were too weak to survive outside, too strong and overwhelm the local ecosystems, or have strange properties that the higher ups decided needed to be checked. The average specimens would be let out to roam the world but are implanted with trackers and a brain chip that gives it a mental shock to stop it from getting close to cities.

He had to contain 4 different breaches, clean shit from the ceiling, had to tranq 3 different creatures so they wouldn’t taunt one of the stronger mutants, fought said mutant after a piece of important equipment was stolen by it, and some much bullshit. The interaction Vegis had with the personnel down there was even worse. For some reason, half of them don’t know a thing about personal hygiene and stank almost as bad as the animals themselves when they exit their hazmat suits. 2 of them forgot that the creatures still needed to be feed, a whole team got into a fist fight over the a disagreement of what the data represented, and had to drag out a scientist from the air vent after they had a small mental breakdown since they have been down there for the last 2 months and needed to see the sun.

The intelligence of the many people down there is only comparable to their incompetence which was a lot. The amount of glass that had to be swept up due to them dropping vials and beakers is astounding. They were nice people, but they really need to stop being so clumsy.
