Chapter 15: Trial of Strength: Unyielding Edge

  Location: Forest

  Time of Day: Morning

  Day 4 Week 2

Captain & Lumina - Right Side Forest Path

The forest east side had taller trees and twisted branches. Captain, rifle strapped across his back, stepped into a small clearing surrounded by jagged rocks and uneven ground. Across from him, Lumina stood on a low boulder, arms folded, her katana resting on her back.

"This trial isn't about raw power," she said, her voice calm but firm. "It's about precision under pressure. Striking true even when your body trembles, and when your mind wavers. So you'll need to be able to hold your aura steady, even when I push you to your limits."

Captain smirked faintly. "...So in other words, you're not testing my strength. You're testing if I can keep my strikes steady when it counts."

Lumina's lips curved in a small smirk. "Bingo." She tied her hair back into a loose ponytail, her tone sharpening. "Strength without control is wasted, so adaptation..." her eyes glinted, "...is everything." She stepped down from the boulder, "Now, let's begin."

Captain reached over his shoulder SHHK! and pulled the rifle free, swinging it forward in one smooth motion. He leveled it at her, stance solid. "Then let's see if you can dodge this."

Lumina's eyes narrowed. She'd seen him carry the strange black weapon since the beginning, but this was the first time she'd seen it aimed at her. CRACK! The shot split the air, fast and sharp. She twisted aside, the bullet whistling past her ear FWOOM! and sparking off a stone.

A faint smirk curved her lips. "Oh... so that's what this strange weapon of yours does. Hurls little bits of metal faster than I can blink." She tilted her head playfully. "How cute."

Captain's eyes narrowed, tracking her movements. "Tch... faster than a bullet huh. How annoying." His grip tightened on the rifle. "I'll just have to keep trying until one of them lands!" CRACK! CRACK! CRACK! Multiple shots tore through the clearing, but she was already gone vanishing between trees, flipping onto a boulder as splinters burst where the rounds struck. Captain adjusted his stance, "Not bad, but I won't miss forever!"

Lumina's voice drifted coolly across the clearing, teasing. "Then you'd better start hitting something other than rocks."

RATATAT! Captain unleashed a final burst, bullets shredding bark and stone. But Lumina blurred through the barrage, FWSSH! SHUP! WHISH! her form weaving like a shadow between the trees. She flipped forward, landing effortlessly in front of him, palm raised inches from his chest. He froze, eyes narrowing as her smirk lingered. "Cute toy," she said lightly, her voice edged with amusement. "But you'll need more than that to be able to touch me."

Captain exhaled through his nose, lowering the rifle. With a heavy Thud, he let it drop to the dirt. "Then it's time I kick it up a notch." FWOOM! Emanation activating, his red aura flared to life. His shoulders squared, fists tightening. "Let's see how you handle this." He slid into a fighting stance, fists up, aura burning hotter with each breath. "Mano a mano."

Lumina's smirk sharpened. "Ah~ better. Now you're speaking my language." She slid into a ready stance, "Show me what you can really do, Captain. Prove to me that you can adapt."

Captain charged, red aura burning hot, and threw a heavy punch WHAM! but Lumina pivoted cleanly, her movements sharp yet calm. She caught his forearm, redirected it, and drove her palm into his chest. THUD! He staggered back, boots grinding against the dirt.

"Your aura gives you force," she said evenly, "but don't mistake power for control."

He came in again, a low kick snapping forward. Lumina shifted her weight, stepping lightly to the side FWSSH! and in the same motion, her leg snapped upward. SMACK! Her high kick struck his shoulder clean, forcing him back a step. "You have strong legs, but sloppy timing. You're following me instead of leading the fight."

Captain scowled. "Tch... I know how to fight. You're just lucky you've got that speed, otherwise, you'd already be on the ground."

Her smirk widened, eyes glinting. "Oh? Then by all means... catch me." FWSSH! She blurred back into motion, reappearing just out of reach. With a teasing tilt of her head, she lifted a single finger and beckoned him forward.

Captain's jaw tightened. "Then let's try this again!" FWOOOM! Captain dashed in, red aura flaring. His fist shot high WHOOSH! only to carve empty air as Lumina slipped past. He pivoted low, elbow snapping forward THWACK! her forearm caught it clean. Captain snarled, driving a punch left BAM! then right WHAM! but Lumina swayed between the strikes, her hair whipping as each blow barely missed. He spun, a roundhouse kick tearing through the air SHWOOOSH! but she bent back just enough, his boot grazing inches from her face before she slipped out of range. Her sandals kissed the dirt as she landed lightly, unshaken.

Her expression stayed calm, "You're adapting better, but you also keep hesitating. An enemy won't give you time to think."

Captain rolled his shoulder with a grunt. "Tch... sorry, I'm not used to sparring with a ghost. You move like you're already in my blind spot."

Lumina's smirk returned, eyes narrowing just slightly. "Then sharpen your instincts because in a real fight, a ghost would've killed you by now."

They then clashed again, this time faster. Captain's aura blazing while Lumina remained untouched by her own. "You see now?" she said, stepping lightly around him, her ponytail swaying with each movement. "I don't need brute force to break your rhythm. Strength means nothing if your foundation wavers."

He let out a sharp breath. "Tch... you make it sound easy. Try saying that after I finally land one!" Captain then lunged in, throwing a heavy straight WHOOSH! Lumina slipped past with her usual grace. But this time, his foot stomped down hard THUD! kicking up a spray of dirt and pebbles into the air. Lumina's eyes narrowed as the grit forced her to blink for a split second. In that moment of hesitation, Captain pivoted quick, driving his elbow low, then snapping his fist high. CRACK! His fist grazed her arm, enough to stagger her stance for the first time. Lumina's sandals skidded back against the dirt shhhk! her balance checked, eyes flashing with surprise.

Captain's lips curled into a sharp grin. "Hmph, got you."

Silence fell between them. Then Lumina rolled her shoulder where his punch had landed, her smirk returning. "Very good, Captain" she said, eyes glinting. "That's what I've been waiting for."

Captain grinned. "There's more where that came from."

“Hmph.” Lumina flipped back, landing lightly on the root of a nearby tree. Around them, several logs hung suspended from ropes. She raised her katana. "Then let's see how you handle this!" SHHK! With one swift slash, the ropes snapped. Three heavy logs dropped at once, swinging wildly through the air.

Captain reacted instantly. He ducked the first WHOOSH! weaved past the second WHUMP! then met the third head-on, shoving it aside with raw force. CRACK! His aura flared, holding steady as the log split away. Breathing hard, he straightened.

Lumina crossed her arms, a hint of a smile breaking through her usual calm. "I see you're doing better. You're finally starting to trust it."

Captain huffed, rolling his shoulder. "It feels like my bones are learning to scream."

"Good," she said smoothly. "That just means you're alive."

After nearly an hour, Lumina finally called a pause. Captain leaned against a tree, wiping sweat from his brow.

"You don't hold back," he muttered.

"Neither do you," she replied. "That's why this works."

He gave a single nod. "Well... ready for the next round?"

They both looked out over the terrain ahead.

  "Born ready," Lumina shot back.

They faced each other across the clearing, but something was off. Lumina still hadn't entered her Emanation State... and her katana hadn't even left its sheath for combat.

Captain's eyes narrowed. "You're holding back, aren't ya?"

Lumina raised an eyebrow. "Oh, was it that obvious?"

"You've been fighting me this whole time without entering your Emanation State... and without your katana."

"You see, this training wasn't about keeping up with me," she said. "It was about keeping up with yourself. With your endurance and your control." Then her gaze sharpened. "But now, I guess you're ready for something harder."

Captain's eyes narrowed. "Oh, am I now?"

Lumina smirked faintly. "Let's just say I'm done sparring with a handicap."

She reached back, slowly unsheathed her katana, and took a stance. SHING! But there was no aura yet, she was just focused. "I'm done holding back," she said, blade angled at her side. "From here on, you give me everything you've got."

Captain smirked, fists tightening. "Careful what you ask for."

Lumina's eyes narrowed, a faint glint flashing. "Good. I wouldn't accept less either way."

She charged FWSSH! Lumina blurred forward, weaving through his strikes. Her katana flicked with precision CLANG! CLANG! WHISH! redirecting each blow as her steps flowed like water tap-tap-tap! Captain roared, red aura flaring. His fist shot wide WHOOSH! she slipped under. He pivoted with a kick THUD! she deflected, sliding past. His elbow cut down BAM! she tilted just enough, his strike grazing air. CLANG! WHISH! CRACK! THUD! The clearing echoed with every clash. His fists snapped tighter WHAM! WHAM! His kicks carved clean arcs SWOOSH! THUD! No longer chasing her, his strikes began cutting into the space she would move BAM! WHISH! CRASH!

Lumina's eyes flickered. "He's adapting... good."

Captain exhaled sharply, red aura surging harder as he dashed forward. FWOOOM! He feinted high, her katana snapped up to meet it, then dropped low, shoulder crashing into her ribs. WHAM! The impact knocked her back, sandals skrrrch! skidding across the dirt. Captain straightened, panting hard, a thin grin spreading across his face. "You good? 'Cause I'm not done yet."

Lumina steadied herself, exhaling slow. Then, her lips curved into a faint smile. "...Better than ever actually. I was waiting for this exact moment." She stepped forward step... step... Her eyes sharpened, her stance coiled tight and then it came... FWOOM! A burst of green light exploded into the clearing, calm yet alive, flowing in perfect sync with her every breath. It felt controlled, deadly, and beautiful. Her Emanation had finally awakened.

"There it is..." Captain muttered, eyes narrowing.

Lumina's irises glowed bright green, her natural color overtaken by the aura's radiance. A green heat-like aura wrapped around her and her katana.

"Let's see how you handle my Emanation," she said, her voice calm but edged. "This state pushes my speed and precision beyond their limits. So no more half-measures."

Captain grinned, settling deeper into his stance as his red aura flared hotter. "Good. Now it feels fair."

Lumina angled her katana, her smirk faint but sharp. "Then let the fun begin." FWOOSH! She vanished in a streak of green.

Lumina vanished or so it seemed. A flicker, then a blur then sudden pressure up close. FWSSH! She flashed forward, her strikes light but relentless, tapping the edges of his aura. Her katana cut with perfect precision SHHK! WHISH! CLANG! each slash stopping just short, sharp enough to remind Captain she could have ended it at any moment.

Captain gritted his teeth. He blocked CLANG! pivoted THUD! then roared as his power burst outward. BOOM! Red clashed against green, the clearing erupting with light, wind, and heat.

"Don't just defend!" Lumina barked mid-strike. "Push back!"

"HRAAH!" Captain surged forward. He slammed into her defense, and the world shook CRACK! The ground split, trees rattled, and both were blasted apart, landing heavy on their feet.

They stood, breathing hard, eyes locked. Lumina slid her katana back into its sheath SHHK! her green aura fading. "That's enough for today."

Captain's aura dimmed. "Tch... took you long enough to back down. But I'm not done yet."

Lumina smirked faintly. "Oh, trust me, you wouldn't want me at full power on day one."

The day was now officially over but their trial wasn't. It was only just the beginning.

  Day 5 Week 2 – Morning

The forest was alive with its usual bird song. Captain stood in the clearing, his red aura flowing steadily around him. Lumina stood across from him, katana in hand, her green aura flowing gently. "You've improved more than yesterday," she said evenly. "That means I don't need to go easy on you anymore."

"You already said that yesterday," Captain shot back.

A faint smile curved her lips. "Then maybe today, I'll show you something I didn't yesterday."

Captain's brow furrowed. "And what exactly does that mean?"

She hummed softly. "I think it's better if I show you rather than explaining it."

The wind stilled. Rustle... silence. Even the birds went quiet.

Her aura then vanished. The clearing grew heavy... then FWOOM! A dark green aura rippled outward, elegant yet unsettling. Captain's instincts screamed. Goosebumps crawled up his arms as the pressure wrapped around him. Shadows stretched long across the clearing. Her silhouette blurred at the edges.

For an instant, he thought he saw a silhouette, sleek, sharp, almost regal, but the image slipped away before his eyes could hold it. He could feel her more than see her. FWSSH! She was gone. Pressure pressed against his back then vanished. THUMP! A shockwave rippled through his aura. Sweat slid down his temple as he spun, but she was already behind him again.

Her voice came low and near, as if whispered right beside his ear, yet echoing from everywhere at once. "...What you are feeling now... is my Elegant Form."

Captain's teeth clenched. His instincts screamed danger, but his chest burned with anticipation. FWSSH! FWSSH! FWSSH! She flickered around him, too fast to track. He swung once, twice WHOOSH! WHAM! but struck nothing but air. "What the hell is this..."

Her whisper came again, soft yet chilling, as though carried by shadows. "...A step beyond Emanation... a breath where time itself forgets to move."

Captain's breath caught, heart pounding. Then SHHHK! steel gleamed for an instant. He glimpsed not one blade, but two.

Lumina's voice echoed as a whisper. "...I see one second ahead. And with speed like mine... one second feels like an eternity."

And then FWOOSH! It was gone. The presence, the shadow, the whispers. Her aura returned, green and steady, as though nothing had happened. Lumina stood calmly in front of him, composed, katana in her grasp.

Captain's chest heaved, his eyes fixed on her, wide with disbelief and awe. "...Incredible. I couldn't even see where you were. But... can you actually see the future?"

"Yes, but only for a second," she replied coolly. "And on top of that the drawback is steep. It drains my stamina far faster than my base state, so I save it for when no other choice remains." Her lips curved faintly. "As for the rest... you'll have to wait until next time to see it properly."

Captain lowered his fists slightly, his voice was quieter now, steadier. "...That's... beyond anything I imagined." A pause, then with genuine respect, "You really are on another level." ("Amazing. With her on our side... we might actually have a higher fighting chance against the Echos.") He thought steady and firm.

A faint smile touched her lips before fading just as quickly. Lumina turned, walking toward the edge of the clearing. "When the time comes, I'll need you strong enough to match that. Remember, limits aren't fixed. We define them ourselves." She glanced back once, her eyes glowing faintly green. "Well? Think you can catch up, Captain?"

He straightened, his aura reigniting with a steady surge. Determination burned through the awe in his gaze. "I'll keep pushing until I do!" FWOOM! Red and green clashed once more, shaking the clearing as the fifth day drew to a close.

Both groups then regrouped at Lumina’s house to share how their training had gone. But they weren’t the only ones listening...
