Chapter 14: Trial of Strength: Beyond Limits

  Location: Main Dojo

  Time of Day: Morning

  Day 4 Week 2

The morning sun shined gently over the rooftops of Xevia. Chirp! Chirp! Birds called in the distance as the dojo doors Creak swung open. The party stepped into the dojo.

Hikari stretched with a long yawn, her arms flopping above her head. Fwaaah~ Her eyes were half-shut. "Ugh... why are we up this early again?"

"Because strength doesn't care about your sleep schedule," Lumina replied flatly, arms folded across her chest.

"Or your back pain," Slayer added cheerfully, giving Hikari's shoulder a light PAT! "Let's go, champ."

"Awee man..." Hikari slouched, dragging her feet.

“Let’s go, Hikari,” Captain said firmly as he stepped past. “Don’t wanna fall behind now, do you?”

Hikari let out a faint sigh, pushing herself up. “Yeah, yeah… I’m coming.”

The group moved beyond the dojo grounds into the dense forest behind it, an expanse of towering trees, twisting roots, mossy slopes, and scattered boulders. Lumina stopped at the edge of a wide clearing, her hair swaying lightly in the breeze. "You all survived the stamina trial," she said with a smirk. "Impressive... but that was just the beginning."

Hikari raised a hand, covering her yawn with the other. Fwaaah~ "Hey question."

Lumina tilted her head slightly. "Question, Hikari?"

Blinking as if trying to shake off her drowsiness, Hikari lowered her hand. "Yes, uhm-in regards to the stamina training. I was trying to figure out last night, while still completely drained." Her tone carried a faint note of complaint. "On why we had to hold our Emanation state for three hours. Is it because that's the sweet spot? Or... is it simply because you wanted to see us suffer?"

Lumina flicked her hair back with a faint smirk, tapping a finger against her chin. "Ah, glad you questioned why I decided three hours. Lets see... sweet spot? Maybe. Watching you suffer? Definitely a bonus."

Captain sighed, dragging a hand down his face. "Knew it..."

Lumina's eyes glinted as her tone grew firm. "The truth is simpler. Three hours isn't random, it's the point where everything is tested. First, the body gives in to exhaustion. Then the mind begins to falter, filling with doubt. And finally, the spirit itself is pushed to its edge. You all reached that wall... and still kept going. That means something inside you, some drive or reason pushed you further. Without it, you would've collapsed long before. This tells me you each carry a fighting spirit worth sharpening."

Hikari's faint smile faded as her eyes softened. She brushed at her sleeve, almost shyly, before nodding. "...Yeah. I remember what kept me going."

Captain's jaw tightened, his gaze fixed on the ground. His arms crossed slowly, a low exhale escaping. "...Same here."

Lumina crossed her arms with a soft hmph. "Very good. Hold onto that because you'll need it again."

Step... step... The breeze carried her words as she turned back to the forest. "Now, prepare yourselves because the next trial won't be as forgiving." She swept her hand dramatically toward the forest. "Today, we begin phase two! Strength and Resilience training. You'll still be working in pairs though. Slayer with Hikari, and Captain with me. But this time..." Her gaze sharpened. "We're doing it all out here. It gives us more space to move, climb, dodge and... fall."

Hikari deadpanned, "Oh, great... my last night dream is really coming true."

Captain's eyes scanned the terrain. His mind was already calculating elevation points and slopes. "I assume there'll be more impact involved."

"Exactly." Lumina nodded. "This isn't about just holding your Emanation anymore, it's about controlling it under pressure. Anything from strikes, blocks, balance, reaction, adaptation..."

"...And maybe a surprise or two," Slayer chimed in with a wink. SHING! He unsheathed his blade an inch, then slid it back.

Hikari crossed her arms, puffing her cheeks slightly. "Please tell me I don't have to lift a tree."

"Not the whole tree," Slayer grinned. "Just parts of it... and quickly."

Lumina paced slowly between them, Step... step... "You'll move through the terrain, fight while thinking, dodge while breathing, and react without losing focus. If your Emanation breaks under pressure..." She halted, her eyes sharp. "...then you're not fit for this!"

"Hmph, lovely," Captain muttered under his breath.

Lumina halted between him and Hikari, her expression sharp. "You both held your Emanation for three hours yesterday. Let's see if you can still hold it... when something's hitting back."

Hikari clenched her fists, eyes narrowed. "...Alright, I'm ready. Let's do this thing."

"Haha, now you're getting it!" Slayer laughed, spinning his sword with a flashy twirl. Whrrr! CLING!

"Your trial begins now!" Lumina declared, raising her hand. "Push until your bodies give out, and don't stop until you can't stand anymore."

With that, the party split. Rustle! Thud! Hikari and Slayer vanished into the left treeline, while Lumina and Captain ascended toward the rocky ridges to the right.

Hikari & Slayer - Left Side Forest Path

The forest stirred around them with birds fluttering overhead, leaves crunching under their boots, and the distant crack of shifting branches. Hikari ducked beneath a low limb, tugging her lab coat as she followed Slayer along a narrow trail between moss-covered trees.

"Are you sure this is the safe side of the woods?" Hikari asked, brows furrowed.

"Absolutely not, haha!" Slayer shot back brightly. "That's what makes it training."

"...Great," Hikari muttered, crossing her arms. "I just hope there aren't any monsters."

Slayer puffed out his chest, pointing his sword skyward with a heroic grin. "The only monster you should fear... is ME! HAHA!" His voice boomed so theatrically it echoed through the trees.

Hikari blinked, deadpan. "...Uh-huh. Totally terrifying."

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.

They came into a small clearing where twisted trunks leaned like old pillars. At the center stood a massive, slanted tree, its roots sprawling across the ground like veins. Slayer stopped and turned to her. "All right, science queen... Phase Two starts now!" he announced, stretching his arms with an exaggerated flourish. "Strength and Resilience, remember?"

Hikari adjusted her gloves with a snap. "So what? You gonna start throwing rocks at me or something?"

"Not rocks." Slayer grinned. He drew his sword with a SHING, giving it a few easy swings before pointing it upward. "Trees!"

  "...Excuse me?!" Hikari's eyes widened.

Before she could say more, Slayer swung through a nearby trunk. Shhhk! CRASH! The log toppled and rolled straight toward her.

"What the-!?" Hikari gasped as her pink aura flared. Fwoosh She launched upward, flipping clean over the rolling log. Her coat whipped behind her as she landed in a low crouch, aura shimmering, eyes sharp. Thud The log crashed into a tree behind her with a heavy crack.

Slayer grinned wider. "Oh wow. See? You're learning already."

"Are you insane?!" Hikari shouted, throwing her arms up in disbelief. "You could've crushed me!"

Slayer waved her off with a casual flick of his hand, resting the sword against his shoulder. His tone stayed light, almost teasing. "Nah. Your aura's faster than your brain. And to be honest? That's kinda the point haha."

Hikari huffed, but deep down, she knew he was right. This wasn't just strength, it was reaction, control, and instinct. She let out a breath. "...Fine. What's next?"

Slayer pointed upward with his sword. "See that branch?"

Hikari squinted. "The one that's, like... twenty feet up?"

"Yup! I want you to climb up there using your aura to boost your movement, kind of like how you did before, but with more power. Then leap to the next one. You know... ninja style."

"I'm a scientist, not a ninja," Hikari deadpanned.

Slayer laughed, flashing her a big thumbs-up. Shing His sword rested easily on his shoulder. "Now you're a combat scientist. Watch and learn."

He bent his knees and leapt straight up, landing smoothly on the branch with perfect balance. Not a flicker of aura surrounded him. He crouched there easily, resting his sword against his shoulder as he looked down. "See? Easy. Your turn now."

Hikari blinked up at him, her mouth falling open. "Wait, you didn't even use aura!"

Slayer grinned under his helmet. "Didn't need to. But for you? Yeah, I'd recommend it."

Grumbling under her breath, Hikari muttered, "Figures..." She braced herself and gathered aura around her legs. Fwoosh Pink light flared at her feet before she launched upward.

"Haah!" She nearly overshot the branch but managed to cling on, arms trembling as she pulled herself up.

"Okay-okay-OKAY!!" she groaned, hauling herself up. "This is terrifying!"

"That's the resilience part!" Slayer called from a branch a few feet ahead, balanced with ease. "If you fall, you get up! You panic, you-"

"SCREAM!" Hikari shouted as she launched for the next branch. Her aura flared bright around her, and she barely caught hold of it. Wham She hung there, breathing hard, her heart racing.

Slayer cupped his hands around his mouth, voice booming through the trees. "Now that's what I like to see!"

Slayer hopped down from the branches with a light Thud, landing smoothly before striding into the next clearing. Hikari followed, but when her boots hit the ground she stumbled forward with a squeak, catching herself. "Slayer..." she panted, dragging herself after him. "Do you... ever get tired?"

Leaning casually against a tree, Slayer looked annoyingly relaxed, though a bit of sweat glimmered beneath his armor. "Of course I do." He chuckled, tapping his chestplate. "I just hide it better under all this metal."

"Fantastic... I always dreamed my legacy would be death by cardio," Hikari groaned, brushing her hair back.

Slayer pointed ahead. The forest floor stretched into uneven terrain lined with roots and stones. "Okay, Hikari. Last one for today. Traverse the whole path with your aura active. No slips or stumbles. And if you touch the ground..." He tapped his sword against his shoulder. Clang "...then you start over."

"More obstacles again?" Hikari groaned, shoulders sagging.

"Hey, you're the genius," Slayer said with a wink. "So go on... calculate your limits."

Hikari narrowed her eyes. "Fine, I'll show you."

She took a long breath, closed her eyes, and let her aura flare. Fwoom Then she moved... leaping, landing, slipping, catching herself. Each motion sharpened, every adjustment faster, until she cleared the final rock with a flawless landing. Aura still bright, she threw her arms up. "YES!"

Clap clap clap! Slayer applauded with a wide grin beneath his helmet. "Now that's the form I've been waiting for."

They trained into the afternoon. Under Slayer's watch, Hikari's movement and control grew sharper with each round. By the time the sun dipped behind the trees, they finally called it for the day.

  Following the Next Morning

Hikari stood ready with her emanation already active. Across from her, Slayer stood tall, his shield on his back, a metal sword in hand. "You sure about this?" he asked, his voice steady. "Just so you know, I won't go easy on you."

"Good." Hikari smiled with confidence, stepping forward. "Because I'm not the same clumsy person you trained yesterday." Her expression hardened. "So go ahead. It's time you showed me that Emanation of yours. I earned at least that much after all this training."

Slayer chuckled, rolling his shoulders. "Careful what you wish for... because it might just get you killed."

Hikari smirked, her voice steady. "Enlighten me."

Slayer raised his sword, eyes glinting beneath his helmet. "Fine. But don't say I didn't warn you!"

A moment of stillness came. Until... Blue heat-like aura began to stir around him, not bursting, but unfolding. It crept across his armor, glowing brighter with each breath. Then, with a sudden HAAH! FWOOSH! it erupted outward. The ground cracked beneath his boots, pebbles rattling from the force. His silver armor gleamed, the engraved lines lighting up like veins alive with energy.

Hikari's eyes widened for an instant before narrowing, her gaze sharpening. "Hmph, now that's more like it," she muttered.

Slayer raised his head slightly. His eyes glowed blue behind the visor, faint waves of heat shimmering as if the aura itself was leaking out. "This is what you wanted to see, right?" His voice now carried a deeper echo beneath the resonance of his Emanation. "Blue Emanation... it doesn't burn hot..." His hand reached back, pulling the shield from his back with a heavy Shhhk as he brought it forward. He raised his sword, then slammed it against the shield with a sharp CLANG! A ripple of force burst outward FWOOM! shaking the air around them. "...it burns unbreakable."

Hikari raised an arm to shield her face from the blast, her hair whipping in the rush of energy. "Wow... intense," she muttered.

He leveled his stance, voice steady. "I'm not built for speed or brute strength. My specialty is endurance. You could level half the dojo with a blast, and I'd still be standing here asking if that was your warm-up."

Hikari tilted her head, a smirk tugging at her lips. "Sounds like you're daring me to test that."

"Oh, please. Do." Slayer stepped forward, the ground Cracking beneath his boots as his aura rippled. "But don't be shocked if your best tricks just bounce right off."

Hikari crossed her arms as she activated her Emanation FWOOM! Pink aura surged around her. Her grin sharpened, eyes locked on him. "Then let's see which one of us breaks first." Without warning, Hikari surged forward FWOOSH! faster, sharper than the day before. She wasn't the same flustered trainee fumbling her footwork. Now, every step carried precision. She feinted left, then burst right, her pink aura flaring bright as she launched a kick straight into Slayer's shield. BOOM! The impact thundered through the clearing, the shockwave rattling branches. Her strike hit like a cannon, but his arm didn't budge.

"Told you," Slayer said, calm behind the steel.

He countered instantly, his sword slicing through the air. Shhhk Hikari dropped low, flipping back with surprising grace before landing lightly on her feet.

"Okay... I admit it," she said between breaths. "You're a walking tank."

"You forgot to add handsome," Slayer quipped. "Don't skip that part."

Hikari rolled her eyes, aura flaring around her legs. "Don't push your luck... tin can." She dashed forward again, FWOOSH! the ground cracking under her step. Her dodges came sharper now, her punches and kicks landing with surprising weight. Each move felt cleaner, her aura flowing in sync with her body like it was guiding her. Hikari blinked in surprise, a grin tugging at her lips. "Hah... look at me. I'm actually fighting!"

From behind his shield, Slayer laughed. "That's the spirit! Told you, combat scientist." His voice dropped, steadier now. "You've come a long way in such a short time." His shield lit up, glowing brighter with pure blue energy. Fwooom "But here's the thing, Hikari... some enemies won't fall to clever tactics. Some, you'll just have to outlast!"

Hikari steadied her breathing, her eyes narrowing, aura flaring hotter. "Then I better start hitting harder!"

Slayer's grin widened. "Now we're talking!"

They stepped in, fists raised, bumping them with mutual smiles before clashing again. Pink and blue auras collided, lighting up the clearing. Fwoom! Boom! Crash! Their battle raged on through the morning, each blow carrying growth as much as strength.

Meanwhile Captain and Lumina faced a trial of their own.

"True strength isn’t measured by how long you can endure... but by how far you're willing to push yourself when it feels impossible." - Lumina Ashira
