Chapter 20: Trial by Fire

  Location: Verdant Ridge

  Time of Day: Morning

  Day 4 Week 3

At sunrise, the party left the comfort of Lumina's house with no hint of their destination. Lumina led the way in focused silence, with Slayer trailing just ahead of Hikari and Captain. The stone path wound gradually uphill, it was flanked by tall swaying grass and ancient archways wrapped in moss. The air was cool, filled with the distant cries of birds and the soft rustle of wind slipping through the trees below.

"S-So... we're hiking for fun now?" Hikari muttered under her breath, half-joking but already sensing something was up.

"They've been suspiciously quiet the whole time we've been walking," Captain whispered beside her, eyes narrowing.

"That's how you know it's a surprise party," Hikari whispered back with a smirk.

Step... step... The narrow path ended, and the forest opened into a breathtaking view. The group emerged onto a wide, timeworn plateau. The stone beneath their boots was scarred with age. Crumbled pillars lined the edges, faded banners flapping lazily in the wind. Beyond, the endless sea of Xevia's forest stretched to the horizon. At the plateau's center, Slayer and Lumina finally turned.

Slayer spread his arms wide, his voice dramatic. "Welcome to Verdant Ridge," he declared. "A no better place to question your life choices." He jabbed a finger toward the sky. "This is where we'll hold our most advanced sparring matches with just neutral ground. No more dojo, trees, puzzles, or illusions."

"Just raw combat," Lumina added firmly, stepping forward with her arms crossed and her gaze sharp. "And this... will be your ultimate test."

Hikari blinked, her voice uneasy. "Ultimate test? ...Please elaborate on that."

"You'll be fighting us," Lumina said flatly.

"At the same time," Slayer added with a grin.

"As one," they finished in unison.

Silence. The words hung heavy in the air as Hikari and Captain exchanged a sharp glance. "So... it's come to that, huh," Captain muttered, his grip tightening on his rifle. CLACK

Hikari stepped forward, stunned. "O-Okay, okay, I know we're good but not that good. What's the purpose of this test, anyway?"

Lumina paced slowly, "Well, you've trained your stamina, built your resilience, sharpened your minds, and awakened to the true nature of your Emanation. You guys also discovered new abilities along the way... but that was just the beginning."

Slayer crossed his arms. "The purpose of this test is to see if both of you are capable enough to fight as one. This isn't just about fighting alone anymore. It's about trust, awareness, timing, and most importantly-" He jabbed a finger dramatically forward. "-teamwork."

"I see..." Hikari looked down at her gloves, flexing her fingers. Clench. "Do you really think we can take them on, Captain?"

Captain slid a thumb along the edge of his rifle. SHNK He smirked faintly. "Hmph. Well... only one way to find out." His eyes cut toward Hikari. "Right?"

Hikari straightened, tugging at her gloves with a sharp snap. FWIP She flashed him a determined grin. "Right. Let's show 'em what we've got then."

FWOOOOOSH! Wind whipped across the ridge, carrying the cries of birds overhead. The sun blazed down, setting the stage for what was to come. Slayer reached over his shoulder. SHHHNK! His sword slid free from its sheath, the steel gleaming as he swung it up and rested it lazily across his shoulders. With a low hum, his shield detached from his back and floated at his side, ready. Lumina followed. SHHINK! Her katana sang as it left its scabbard, the blade flashing before she gave it a single spin. She lowered into stance with graceful precision, giving the hilt a light tap with her pinky. Her eyes narrowed, sharp and unreadable. Neither mentor had flared their aura just yet.

"You two ready to rumble?!" Slayer called with a grin, tilting his head as he extended a hand toward them.

Hikari took a deep breath and straightened. "Yeah, let's do this. And don't you dare go easy on us."

"Trust me we won't," Lumina replied, deadpan. "As long as you guys do the same. But we won't be using our Emanation States from the start... at least not yet."

Captain's red aura flared to life. FWOOOM! He leveled his rifle with a confident smirk. "Then we'll just have to make you bring them out!"

With that, the battle erupted. BOOM! Captain lunged forward, rifle in hand, while Hikari steadied herself behind him, pink aura flaring as her support role came alive. Lumina moved like a blur, intercepting in an instant. FWISH! Her eyes locked on Captain with razor focus as she leapt. Captain's rifle shifted with a mechanical grind. CHNK-SHHHRR! The frame morphed into shotgun mode. Sliding low across the ground, he aimed upward and fired. BOOM! BOOM! Lumina's blade flashed. CLANG! CLANG! She deflected both shots effortlessly with the flat of her blade, sparks flaring from each impact. Landing softly, her eyes narrowed into slits. "Hmph, how predictable."

Captain didn't hesitate. He pivoted back toward Hikari. "Now!"

"On it!" Her eyes flashed pink as her aura surged upward in a radiant swirl. "Activating Aura Tech Link Drones!!"

FWOOOSH! Three drones launched from her side, spiraling into formation before weaving past Captain in a cinematic arc. They converged on Lumina in a dazzling sweep. PEW! PEW! Pink blasts lit the air. Lumina spun into motion, blade a blur, deflecting shot after shot with sharp precision. One strike ricocheted ZING! and shattered a drone mid-air, BOOM! its fragments clattering to the ground. Captain was already circling behind her, his rifle morphing in his hands with a metallic grind. SHRR-CLACK! Sleek SMG mode. BRRRT! BRRRT! Burst fire ripped across the plateau, streaking straight for Lumina's side.

Suddenly CLANG! A massive shield cut across the line of fire. Sparks sprayed as Slayer landed hard between them, shield raised high. "Surprise meat shield reporting for duty!" he laughed, voice muffled under his helmet.

Lumina flicked her blade down, brushing back a loose strand of hair. "Appreciate the help."

"As long as I get a beer later, I'll always be on your side," Slayer quipped. Lumina rolled her eyes with a quiet sigh.

"Now it's my turn!" Slayer roared, slamming forward with explosive force. WHAM! His shield smashed into Captain's chest, Gah! sending him skidding across the plateau in a spray of dust and grit.

"Captain!" Hikari cried, eyes wide as he hit the ground.

"Eyes over here," Lumina cut in coldly. FWOOOSH! She darted forward, blade arcing toward Hikari. HUMM! CLANG! One of the drones came between them, intercepting the strike. Sparks burst across the plateau as the drone shattered apart, its pieces raining down. Only one remained, hovering frantically at Hikari's side. "Resourceful, but don't rely on toys for too long," she muttered, her tone cool.

"Boost me, Hikari!" Captain barked, forcing himself back to a crouch.

"Right! Boosting now!" Hikari thrust her palm forward. FWOMP! A pulse of pink energy surged out, spiraling into Captain's aura. His crimson light flared, now threaded with pink.

Captain growled, eyes narrowing. "Hmph... let's see how you handle this!" His rifle groaned and shifted, stretching into sniper form, taking aim at Lumina. From across the ridge, Slayer spotted it instantly. "Aw hell!" He threw himself in front of Lumina, shield braced. CRACK! The shot tore through the air like thunder, slamming dead-center into Slayer's shield. The force rippled outward, shockwave blasting both him and Lumina backward. They hit the stone hard, THUD! THUD! skidding across the plateau. Dust kicked up around them.

"Gotcha," Captain muttered, a proud smirk tugging at his lip.

Hikari then took the moment and sprinted to her broken drones, dropping to a crouch. She thrust out both hands, pink aura flowing into them as fragments knit back together piece by piece. BZZZT! The final drone flickered back online, hovering at her side with renewed energy. "Phew... back in action!" Hikari muttered as the drone hummed beside her. "Now..." Across the clearing, Lumina and Slayer rose slowly to their feet.

Slayer brushed dust from his shoulder. "Alright... so they are serious."

Lumina reset her stance, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "Looks like we underestimated them a bit." She chuckled softly. "Their coordination seems to be improving with every second."

Slayer cracked his neck, rolling his shoulders. "Then I think it's about time we stop pulling our punches and show them what we're really made of."

  "Agreed." Lumina said simply.

They weren't done yet, not even close. Then. The ground quaked as both mentors released their restraints. FWOOOOOSH! Pressure exploded outward, the air warping with heat. Lumina and Slayer had finally activated their Emanation States. Cracks spiderwebbed beneath their boots. Lumina's form ignited in a beautiful green silhouette, her aura swirling like a storm. Beside her, Slayer's figure flared with deep blue waves, heat rippling outward. Their voices rang together "Haaaaaaah!" sharp, commanding, as their full power surged into the open. When the glow faded, they stood tall and unshaken. Lumina's green eyes glinted with battle-forged resolve. Slayer loomed in a menacing stance, blue waves of heat distorting around his visor. Hikari and Captain instinctively fell into their own stances, eyes wide.

"Okay... now we're dead. Well, it was nice knowing you Captain," Hikari muttered, snapping a sarcastic salute as she released her Emanation.

Captain exhaled sharply, grip tightening on his rifle. "Tch, so we finally pushed them over the edge, huh. Get ready Hikari because the real battle is now beginning."

"Yeah, yeah, I know that line all too well. Give me a break, will ya?" She muttered. Her aura flared to life again, drones hovering at her side.

Lumina cracked her neck as she stepped forward in a straight, graceful line. "Ready for lesson two?" she said coolly.

Slayer twirled his sword lazily in one hand, grinning wide. "Hope you brought helmets 'cause things are about to get educational."

Then, without warning WHOOSH! Lumina vanished. She reappeared mid-stride, katana gleaming with green light. In one sweeping arc, her blade cut through the air, aiming for both students at once. Captain turned, glancing at Hikari.

  Captain's eyes widened. "Hikari move!"

But the words barely left his mouth. CRACK! The strike landed, sending both of them flying like ragdolls. They slammed into a moss-covered pillar with a brutal THUD! Dust and moss scattered across the plateau.

Lumina lowered her blade, voice flat. "Oops. Looks like I've overdone a bit there."

Hikari groaned, pushing herself up on one knee, her hair falling over her face. BZZZT! Her drones zipped back to her side, hovering close like loyal guards. "Damn... she's frk'n fast."

Captain rolled back onto his feet, jaw tight. "Yeah I can see that. But no time for compliments."

Lumina sighed dramatically, resting the flat of her blade on her shoulder. "Oh well... I guess this is how they learn." She shrugged. Then WHOOSH! she was gone again, blinking out of sight.

Captain's eyes widened. "She's coming back! Quick, heal us!"

"Affirmative!" Hikari thrust her hand forward, as she tried to summon a pulse of light-

"Don't even try it." The voice came low and calm, right behind them.

Both froze. Slayer loomed over their shoulders, sword raised, blue aura blazing around him. WHAM! His strike crashed down like a hammer. Captain and Hikari flared their auras at the last second just enough to soften the impact but it wasn't enough. The force blasted them backward, tumbling across the plateau.

Slayer's visor glinted as he straightened. "Ahh... so you've finally realized it. That keeping your aura active cushions the blow. Very good." His tone was amused, almost proud.

"But it'll take more than that to bring us down!" In midair FWIP! Lumina appeared again. Captain staggered to his feet, but before he could recover, her katana's hilt slammed into his gut. THUD! His breath exploded out in a gasp WHACK! Her heel drove into his chest with a sharp back kick, launching him skyward again. Before gravity could even claim him, she was already ahead, FWOOSH! teleporting in a green flash. She caught him midair by the collar and drove him straight into the stone ground. SLAM! Dust exploded outward, swallowing him in the impact crater, his red aura fading.

Nearby, Hikari's drones had already faded as her stamina waned. She pushed herself up to one knee, coughing hard. "Dam... huh?" She lifted her head only to see a shadow looming over her. Slayer towered above, sword leveled at her chest, his visor glowing with heat. "Going somewhere?" A few steps away, Lumina stood over Captain's winded body, her katana gleaming with calm green light.

  "Checkmate," they said in unison.

The match was over. Lumina exhaled, her green aura fading as she slid her katana back into its sheath with a soft click. She stepped toward Captain, who was still catching his breath on the ground.

"Need a hand, soldier?" she asked with a faint smirk, extending hers.

Captain grunted but smirked back. "Hmph. Only if you promise not to pick on me next time."

"No promises," she replied dryly. Captain finally took her hand, and Lumina pulled him to his feet. "Well, at least you're still alive," she added.

  "...Jeah, barely," Captain muttered.

Across the field, Slayer strolled up to Hikari and offered a hand with exaggerated flair. "Milady, might I assist you from your tragic defeat?"

Hikari squinted at him. "You're enjoying this way too much."

"Hey, I gotta take the wins where I can since Lumina usually kicks my ass."

She rolled her eyes but took his hand. "Noted. Oh, and next time I swear I'm short circuiting your smug tin can."

"I'll be waiting... with anticipation," Slayer said, grin widening under his visor.

Once both had recovered, Lumina and Slayer stood before them, arms crossed, their expressions a mix of stern and impressed. "You two did better than we expected," Lumina said. "Your overall performance was great and you held up further than we expected."

"But," Slayer cut in, "you still dropped the ball when the pressure spiked. You guys hesitated and panicked. Also you forgot something important."

"Team instinct," Lumina finished. "You fought beside each other... not with each other."

"We were... until you guys decided to go full on Emanation." Hikari muttered, puffing her cheeks in a pout.

Captain wiped blood from his lip with his thumb. "So, what now? Did we fail the test?"

"Nope," Slayer said with a grin. "You're fighting us again tomorrow."

  Hikari blinked. "Wait, tomorrow?"

"Yup. And next time," Lumina's tone sharpened, "we're not holding back. We'll go all out from the start with Emanation at maximum capacity."

"So we expect great results," Slayer added, jabbing a finger between them. Despite the bruises and exhaustion, Captain and Hikari exchanged a glance and smirked.

"Fine by me," Captain said. "I wasn't done anyway. I still owe Slayer a bruising."

Hikari cracked her knuckles with a faint smile. "Then let's see how you two handle my hidden trick tomorrow, hehe." The wind swept across the ridge as the sun dipped low. Their first match was over... but the war was far from over.

Tuesday (9/30), I’ll be moving into the new schedule: Mon, Wed, and Fri updates.
