Chapter 19: The Auras True Nature

  Location: Forest

  Time of Day: Morning

  Week 3 Day 3

The group moved quietly through the forest behind Lumina's house. Captain noticed the trail they followed veered farther from their usual training grounds, it was deeper and more secluded. Lumina walked ahead and just behind her was Slayer, predictably chewing on dried fruit as he walked backward, tossing words over his shoulder. "T'day'sh trainin'sh in a shpecial spot," Slayer mumbled through his mouthful. He swallowed with an audible gulp. "Somewhere not even most Emanation wielders get to use."

Hikari tilted her head, curiosity flickering in her eyes. "Uhm, so... where exactly are we going again?"

"Wellspring Grove," Lumina replied without turning. "A sacred place where the natural Emanation of the land flows freely. Perfect for unlocking your unique abilities."

Captain raised a brow. "And we're just allowed to go there?"

"It's protected," Lumina said. "But Slayer and I have permission to go in. We figured that today called for something a little different and special."

Captain's brow furrowed. "Permission from who exactly?"

Lumina's lips curved into the faintest smile. "You'll see soon enough." Her eyes softened as she glanced back at them. "To further explain this place. Wellspring Grove is one of many Emanation Sanctuaries. Each one reveals something different to those chosen by its guardian. Here, the Grove brings out the true nature of your Emanation, what it was always meant to become."

Hikari's curiosity deepened. "So... if this place does that, what about the other Sanctuaries?"

"It depends which one it is," Lumina said. "For instance, some can help you refine and advance your abilities. Others may gift a weapon that carries your aura's true name. Or even a Sanctuary that can change your aura entirely, but only if the guardian deems you worthy. These places don't answer to will or power, only to truth."

Captain let out a low breath, arms crossing. "Hmph. Guess this isn't just training anymore."

Slayer smirked, tossing a piece of fruit into his mouth. "Noph. Think of it like a pop quizh from the universh. munch munch An' trusht me... these placesh are worth witnesshin'." GULP!

Hikari glanced between them, then asked, "So why choose this Sanctuary out of all the others?"

Lumina slowed her pace for a moment, her gaze steady. "Well, it's because of what I've seen from you both. Your training, your resilience... but more than that, your drive to protect your world from the Echos. Wellspring Grove is the Sanctuary that responds to purpose. I believe this is where your true Emanations will finally awaken and I'm positive you'll both succeed."

Captain gave a short nod, his expression firm. "If you're that sure, then I won't waste the chance."

Beside him, Hikari clenched her fists, her eyes sparking with determination. "Then I'll make sure to not let you down."

Slayer grinned under his helmet. "Heh, that's the spirit. Looks like the Grove's about to get a real show."

The group then pushed deeper into the forest. The air grew heavier, threads of light flickering faintly between the branches. FWOOOSH The path ended at a barrier of shifting rainbow light, a great gate woven from strands of Emanation. A low hum pressed against their chests. HUMMMM At the base of the gate sat a small, faintly glowing golden fox. Its three tails swayed slowly, glowing like embers. Around its neck hung a small pendant engraved with the face of a fox.

Lumina slowed her pace, folding her arms. "We're here."

Captain narrowed his eyes, one hand resting on his rifle. "That's the entrance? Looks like it could tear us apart if we touched it." ZZZAP! CRACKLE! A spark arced across the gate, confirming his suspicion.

"It would," Lumina said calmly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "The gate seals off Wellspring Grove from anyone unworthy. There's only one being that can open it."

Hikari leaned forward, eyes sparkling as she tilted her head. "Forget the gate for a second. What is that cute little fox-looking thing??" She pointed at the creature. The fox tilted its own head back at her, golden eyes glowing faintly. pikon!

Slayer strolled up, hands behind his head. "That 'cute little thing' is Lunari. Guardian of Wellspring Grove. He's the one who gave us permission to even stand here."

Hikari puffed her cheeks. "Ehh?! That little fluffball is the guardian?!"

Lumina allowed a faint smile. "Come on. Let's meet him properly." Step... step... The group moved closer until they stood before the fox. The rainbow gate pulsed behind it, light rippling softly. Lumina stopped a few paces away, dipping her head slightly. "It's good to see you again, Lunari." The fox's three tails swayed gently, embers flickering from the tips. Lumina turned, motioning toward the two behind her. "These are the ones I told you about, Hikari and Captain. They've come to seek the Grove's guidance."

The fox raised its head, golden eyes narrowing with calm recognition. Then, to Hikari and Captain's shock, it spoke. Its voice was smooth, deep, and wise despite its small form. "So these are the sparks you've chosen. Their auras burn bright... but raw."

Hikari's eyes widened. gasp! "I-It just... talked?!" She pointed, almost tripping over her words.

Captain narrowed his eyes, tone firm. "A fox that can talk huh?"

Slayer leaned against a nearby tree, grinning under his helmet. "Heh. You two look like you've seen a ghost. Of course Lunari can talk, he's the guardian of this place. He's been in this world longer than most warriors could dream of."

The fox tilted its head slightly, the rune on its necklace pulsing with faint light. "Do not be deceived by appearances lil sparks. I may be small, but my duty is vast. If you wish to step into Wellspring Grove, it is my eyes that will weigh your intent."

Hikari blinked, lowering her hand but still eyeing the fox. "Okay... I've seen a lot of weird things lately, but a talking fox? Never seen that before in my years of being a Hollow."

Captain lowered his rifle slightly, but his brow stayed furrowed. "If you're really the guardian of this place... then what exactly are you guarding us from?"

Lunari's three tails swayed, leaving trails of golden embers in the air. Its golden eyes glowed softly as it answered. "I do not guard you from what lurks outside, Captain. I guard the truth within it. The Grove shows no mercy to liars of heart. So only those who face themselves honestly may step through." The words hung heavy in the air. FWOOOSH The rainbow gate pulsed faintly, as if echoing the fox's warning.

Lumina's lips curved into a faint smile. "That's why I chose this place because out of all the sacred sites, Wellspring Grove is the one best suited for them. Their growth hasn't been about brute power... it's been about purpose."

Hikari straightened, puffing her chest with determination. "Yes, and I'll pass this test no matter what!"

The fox tilted its head at her, "Bravery is easy to say aloud but harder to hold when the Grove reflects what you fear most." silence... rustle of leaves... HUMMMM The grove's energy stirred faintly as if waiting. Lunari finally stepped forward, its small paws making no sound against the grass. "You seek the Grove's truth... then let its path open to you." FWOOOM! His rune flared bright, releasing a wave of golden light that struck the gate. KRRRSHHH! The rainbow strands twisted, spiraling upward in ribbons of color. The barrier didn't shatter, it unraveled, each strand dissolving into sparks that rained gently around them.

Hikari shielded her eyes. "Wahh-! It's like the whole forest just turned into fireworks!"

Captain stood firm. He muttered under his breath, "So this is the power of a guardian..."

As the last sparks faded, the gate was gone. Beyond it stretched Wellspring Grove... crystalline trees glowing brighter than ever, the air alive with drifting threads of pure Emanation. Lumina exhaled softly, almost reverently. "Now you guys understand. This place doesn't open for anyone... only for those Lunari chooses."

Slayer gave Hikari a gentle shove forward. push! "Well? Ladies first. Time to see if the Grove likes you as much as your drone collection."

"Hey!" Hikari puffed her cheeks, swatting at him. "That's a low blow, tin can!"

Step... step... FWOOOSH Together, they crossed the threshold into Wellspring Grove. Crystalline trees towered overhead with their glowing veins pulsing faintly. Threads of Emanation drifted lazily like falling petals, brushing against their skin with a tingling warmth.

Hikari slowed, her eyes wide. gasp "It's... so alive... It feels like the world's nervous system is all right here."

Captain's brow furrowed as he scanned the glowing trees. "I can definitely feel it. My aura's reacting on its own..." His red aura flowed faintly around his fingers.

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

Lunari padded ahead, its golden tails swaying in unison. His tone was calm but firm. "This is Wellspring Grove, one of this world's oldest Emanation sources. It is not a battlefield, nor a shrine.. It's a mirror. What you bring inside, it will return to you a hundredfold."

Hikari tilted her head. "A... mirror?"

Lunari's eyes glowed faintly as embers flickered from its tails. "The Grove does not obey strength nor answer technique. It responds only to intent, your true reason for wielding power. If your purpose is clear, the Grove will shape your aura into its rightful form. But if you cling to fear or lies... it will give you nothing."

Captain crossed his arms, skeptical. "So we just stand here and... hope something happens?"

Lunari turned its gaze on him, unblinking. "Not hope, but honesty. Bare yourself as you are, and the Grove will decide if you are ready."

Slayer leaned back against a glowing trunk, "He's saying it's like a magical vibe check. If you fail it well... congratulations, you just wasted your day."

Lumina shot him a look, then softened as she faced Hikari and Captain. "This is why I brought you here. The other sacred sites test strength or endurance. But you two? Your growth has always been about something deeper. And I truly believe this is the only place that can bring that out."

The Grove hummed faintly around them. HUMMMM The energy seemed to pulse in anticipation. Lunari lowered itself onto its paws, tails curling neatly around its body. "Step forward, both of you. Let the Grove see you for who you are."

"I'll take the lead then." Hikari stepped forward onto the mossy platform beneath the crystalline canopy. She clenched her fists and glanced back at Lumina, Captain, and Slayer before facing the Grove. She then activated her Emanation state, pink aura flowing around her. She closed her eyes, exhaling. "Okay... I can do this..."

The Grove answered. HUMMMM! FWOOOSH! Threads of Emanation surged toward her, swirling like ribbons of light. But instead of settling, they clashed against her aura, sparking and breaking apart. CRACKLE! Hikari flinched, stumbling back a step. Sweat beaded on her forehead. "Nngh... it's not working. Why won't it connect...?"

Lunari's tails lifted, glowing faintly. "You're reaching with your hands, but not your heart. The Grove cannot be commanded like a tool. It must feel your truth... not your effort."

Hikari gritted her teeth. "My truth...?"

"Why do you fight, little spark?" Lunari's golden eyes locked onto hers, unblinking. "What drives your aura to bloom at all?"

Her breath hitched. thump... thump... thump Her heartbeat pounded in her ears. Images flickered behind her eyelids, the broken streets of her world, the panicked voices of people in danger, the memory of Dr. Naru's words before they left. She thought of Captain, Lumina, and Slayer standing at her side, risking everything. Her lips trembled as she whispered. "I'm not here to just fight..." She raised her head, eyes tightening with resolve. "I'm here to protect those in need... and the ones I care about the most." FWOOOOM! Her aura erupted, no longer clashing but embracing the Emanation threads. They wrapped around her like ribbons, spiraling upward in harmony with her light. Pink energy flared, lifting her hair in a radiant breeze as her eyes snapped open, glowing bright.

Slayer blinked and let out a low whistle. "Whoooah... she's heating up now."

Captain tilted his head, "You okay, Hikari? How do you feel?"

Hikari opened her glowing palm, staring as the aura swirled around it. She exhaled slowly, her lips curving into a determined smile. "I feel... stronger. Not just in power, but in who I am. Like everything finally clicked into place."

Lunari's tails swayed, embers drifting from the tips. "There. Now the Grove sees you for who you are. That is the truth of your Emanation, born not from power, but from purpose."

Her aura still flowed around her, glowing brighter with every breath. FWOOOSH! She lowered her hand, the pink light curling gently along her fingers. Captain stepped closer, rolling up one sleeve. A thin scratch ran across the back of his hand, faint but noticeable. "Let's see how real this is."

Hikari smirked nervously. "Alright, don't move." She placed her palm just above his hand. FZZZT! The aura flowed outward, wrapping around his skin. In seconds, the scratch closed, leaving smooth flesh behind.

Captain blinked. He flexed his hand. "Hmph... not bad."

Hikari gave a playful grin. "You're very welcome."

Slayer let out a low whistle, arms crossed. He then tilted his head, tapping his armored shoulder. "Hey, what about me?? This pauldron has been dented since yesterday. You think you can fix metal too, oh great healer?"

Hikari hesitated, then stepped over. "I'll see if I can. Uhm, let me take a look." She placed her glowing palm near the dented plate. HUMMMM The pink aura seeped across the surface, crawling into the warped steel. A soft flash rippled PING! and the dent vanished. The armor gleamed as if newly forged.

Slayer's jaw dropped. "Ooooh! That's not just healing, that's fixing! My beautiful gear lives again! Hah, now I don't have to swap this one out ever again as long as I have you by my side, haha!"

Hikari laughed softly, cheeks pink. "Haha, yeah. Although, I think it only works if it's connected to someone's aura. Like... tied to their life force." She glanced at Captain, then back to Slayer. "But if it's part of you, I can definitely restore it no problem."

Lumina studied closely, her gaze sharp but approving. "Hm, restoration and enhancement. Not just healing... but mending what sustains others. What an impressive awakening."

Lunari's golden eyes glowed faintly, its voice calm but certain. "The Grove has shown you your path, Hikari. You are now more than a healer. You are a force of renewal... one who restores what has been broken, both in flesh and in spirit."

Hikari's chest swelled with pride, though her aura trembled faintly with the strain. She exhaled, letting the glow soften as she stepped back. "Amazing. So... this is what my Emanation was always meant to become."

Captain gave her a small nod. "And it suits you well."

Slayer clapped his gauntlets together with a loud CLANK! "Support unit, healer, armor repair service, Hikari, you're officially the heart of this team."

Hikari smiled, brushing her hair from her face. "Guess I'll take that."

Lunari's tails curled around its body, embers flickering softly. "One spark has become a flame... a light that will protect those dearest to you. Now... the Grove turns to the forge that still waits."

All eyes shifted to Captain. He then nodded and stepped forward, his boots crunching against the moss. He set his rifle across his chest, his expression unreadable.

Hikari gave him a small smile. "You got this, Captain."

He scoffed quietly. "Fine. Let's see what the Grove thinks of me." He then activated his Emanation state, red aura flowing around his body. He closed his eyes, steadying his breathing. For a moment, nothing happened. The Grove's hum seemed to wait, threads of Emanation circling but never sinking into him.

Captain gritted his teeth. "Dam, It's not working."

Lunari's golden gaze fixed on him, its tails swaying slowly. "You're standing like a soldier before inspection... rigid, prepared, armored. The Grove does not answer discipline. It answers the will behind your weapon."

Captain opened one eye, glaring faintly. "And what's that supposed to mean?"

"Ask yourself this. Why do you still carry that rifle? What purpose fuels the hand that grips it?"

The words sank deep and his chest tightened. Memories flickered, his wife and daughter's faces, the moment he failed to protect them, the weight that had crushed him ever since. His fingers trembled against the rifle. thump... thump... thump His heartbeat pounded in his ears. But then, he saw Hikari, standing there with a determined face. Lumina, steadfast and calm. Slayer, grinning like always. Allies who fought at his side now. His jaw set. "I carry it... to make sure what happened before never happens again. To save those who are still left."

FWOOOSH! The Grove answered. The restless threads that had circled him moments before now surged inward, no longer scattering but merging with his aura. They wove into the crimson light flowing from his arms, sinking into his rifle as if reforging it from the inside out. CHNK! SHRRR-CLACK! Gears shifted, and the rifle's frame transformed into a heavy shotgun, its barrel glowing faintly with red light. Captain's eyes widened. "...What the hell." He turned toward a nearby boulder, braced his stance, and pulled the trigger. BOOM! A thunderous blast shattered the rock in half, shards scattering into the brush.

Slayer let out a low whistle. "Ooooh yeah, now that's what I'm talkin' about!"

Before Captain could respond, the rifle shifted again. CHNK! shrrrtt! The frame condensed into a sleek SMG, humming with rapid-fire energy.

Captain blinked, then smirked. "Compact, huh? Let's test it." He aimed at a row of trees. BRRRRTTT! Red rounds zipped through the trunks, burning precise holes into the bark.

Hikari gasped. "Woah, a second transformation... just like that?!"

The rifle shifted once more. CLANG! FWOOOSH! Its form stretched into a long, glowing sniper, the barrel razor-straight and radiant with heat. Captain dropped to one knee, locking onto a distant trunk half-hidden among crystalline trees. He squeezed the trigger. CRACK! A sharp echo rang as bark exploded from the far tree, scorched clean through. Captain stared at the weapon, sweat rolling down his temple. Slowly, it reverted back to its base form with a mechanical CHK-CLACK. He exhaled. "Three forms... and I barely even thought about it. It just... responded."

Lunari's tails swayed, embers drifting in the air. "That is your truth, Captain. Your Emanation adapts to your need and reshaping your weapon to match your intent. That's a soldier's will, given form."

Captain smirked faintly, glancing at his rifle. "Hmph. I believe I'll call it... Configuration Shift."

Lumina stepped closer, arms folded. "You didn't just transform your rifle. You uncovered your Emanation's core trait which responds to your situation. This isn't just power... it's purpose."

Slayer pumped a fist in the air. "Hell yeah! You're a walking arsenal now, soldier boy! One-man army, ready to go!"

Hikari laughed, her aura flickering faintly as she watched him. "Good job, Captain. Looks like the Grove likes you too."

Captain holstered his rifle, exhaling sharply. "Tch, guess it does."

The Grove slowly settled, its glow dimming back into a steady hum. Lumina stepped forward, her voice quiet but firm. "Both of you have now done it. The Grove revealed what your Emanations were always meant to be... and you listened. That's no small feat."

Slayer crossed his arms, his helmet tilting as he chuckled. "Yeah, not bad for a couple rookies. One turns into a walking medkit, the other into an entire armory. Guess training's been worth it after all."

Hikari puffed her cheeks. "Medkit? Really?"

  Captain smirked. "Armory I'll accept."

Then Lunari padded closer, his voice soft and resonant. "What you carry now is not just strength, but purpose. One who restores... and one who adapts. Together, you are more than your parts. Guard this truth well, for the battles ahead will test it again and again."

The group fell silent, letting the words settle. Even Slayer's usual humor paused for a beat. Finally, Lumina exhaled, her gaze sweeping over the crystalline trees. "That's enough for today. Let's head back now because tomorrow, the Grove won't be the one testing you."

Hikari raised a brow. "Wait, what does that mean?"

Slayer only gave a smug shrug. "Heh. Guess you'll see."

Step... step... The party moved toward the exit of the Grove where the the rainbow gate had been, Lunari sat waiting, his three tails swaying gently. The rune on his pendant shimmered with a soft, golden light. "You have taken your first steps into truth," he said warmly, bowing his head. "May your journey carry you farther than even this Grove can see."

The group paused in unison. Lumina offered a respectful bow. "Thank you, Lunari. For your guidance. Be safe now."

Slayer raised a hand in a lazy salute. "Appreciate it, fuzzball. Don't tell anyone, but you're my favorite fox."

Captain gave a curt nod. "Thanks, Lunari. Your words won't be wasted."

Hikari smiled brightly. "Thanks for believing in us, Lunari. Hope to see you again soon!"

Lunari nodded at them. Then one by one, they stepped out, Lumina first, then Slayer, then Captain, and finally Hikari. As she crossed the threshold, the faintest pulse flickered from her coat pocket. The Artifact inside stirred.

Lunari's ears twitched. His golden eyes narrowed. "...Hm? That presence..." His gaze lingered on the trail where the party had vanished. For a long moment, he was still, then he exhaled softly and shook his head. "Must've been her new found power." With a flick of his tails, his rune ignited. FWOOOSH! The rainbow gate shimmered back into place, threads of Emanation weaving tightly until the Grove was hidden once more. The forest fell silent... but unseen, a presence still followed the party.
