Chapter – 07 – STAT! STAT! STAT! part 2

  The entire room went silent.

  Dead silent.

  Then—

“What. The. Hell?” Arthur said as he slowly stood up.

“Why do you have so many titles?” Takashi asked, confused.

My brother while his eyes were squinted on the screen said, “Nii-san, brother, why do you have more titles than levels in this world?”

“Why are half of them like, insults!?” Arthur demanded.

“And the other half are like, psychological diagnoses?” My brother added, looking personally offended on my behalf.

“Why do three separate titles call you an idiot? How did you even manage to earn those?” Trayn spoke while scratching his head.

“That is a very good question. I very much would like to know. Why don’t we ask the people who gave them to me.” I replied throwing the ball back into their corner.

My father snorted coldly. “Forget that, why does he have titles that are opposites?”

“‘Cold person’ and ‘warm person’? ‘sensible’ and ‘nonsensical’? Pick a personality!” Shizuku demanded.

“Hey,” I said, a bit hurt. “I’m complex.”

  “You’re confusing!” Shizuku growled harshly.

Even the king leaned forward, squinting at the screen with a hand on his chin.

“What,” he began slowly, “is a ‘goo-guhl’? And why did you ‘goo-guhl’ whether dragon venom is addictive?” He turned to me. “Lord Vi, are you, planning to ingest dragon venom?”

  I opened my mouth—

  Then closed it.

The fact that the king of a medieval fantasy world was asking me that with genuine concern was…yeah.

“Well,” I began diplomatically, “in my defense—”

“No,” Shizuku cut me off. “There is no defense for this.”

“Absolutely none,” Reika agreed, arms crossed. “Also, what do you mean ‘likes dwarves tied to chairs’!? Why is that a title!?”

“That one is extremely misleading,” I said, pointing at the machine. “There is context for that.”

“There is no context that makes that better,” Takashi muttered eyes filled with concern.

“Indeed,” the king said gravely. “Though I do not know what a ‘do-warf’ is. Tying someone or something to a chair is…I am troubled.”

“People! There is context for that!” I said angrily. “Let me explain!”

“I don’t think I want to know your strange fetishes,” Arthur said, his face scrunched up.

“It’s not a fucking fetish! FUCK!”

“And this one—‘Researching substances they shouldn’t be.’” The king continued as he glanced at me, deeply concerned. “Should I assign you a royal supervisor?”

  “Please don’t,” I said tiredly. “I don’t need a babysitter.”

  “You absolutely do,” Reika said.

“Uhm… ‘might accidentally join a cult’? How do you accidentally join a cult!?” Trayn asked, sounding incredulous.

“I don’t know!?” I protested. “I just show up to places!?”

“Exactly our point!” Shizuku exclaimed. “You need supervision!”

“And that is why my daughter—” Shizuku’s mother began.

“Mother, don’t you dare!” Shizuku cut her off, while going red in the face. Her mother, didn’t seem offended, but pouted instead.

Everyone, even the girls were murmuring and reacting to my status like it was a hate crime on twitter.

“‘Definitely doesn’t have contraband.’” Haruto said slowly. Then he turned to look at me.

“That, is the guiltiest-sounding title I’ve ever heard,” he said flatly.

  Everyone nodded.

  Even the guards nodded.

  Even the king nodded.

I threw my hands up. “Come on! So, what if my titles think I’m suspicious! How is that MY fault!?”

“And you people!” I said pointing at the guards outside of the garden. “Go back to guarding not eavesdropping!”

Then I noticed somebody who wasn’t reacting. Celestia wasn’t reacting to any of that. Her eyes were locked, unblinking, at a single title.

  [Accidentally Summoned]

  Her lips trembled.

“Oh no,” she whispered, face going pale. “Oh no, no, no, no… I—I knew it. I knew something felt wrong. That ritual—did I—did I botch it? Did I summon you by mistake? Did I doom you? Did I—”

“Whoa, hey—hey,” I cut in quickly, stepping closer. “Breathe.”

Her hands were shaking. The king turned sharply.

  “Celestia?”

But she wasn’t listening to him. She was spiraling and nearly fell over, but my mother who was closest managed to catch her. She gently sat her down on her chair.

“This is my fault,” she whispered, gripping her robe, eyes unfocused. “I dragged you here— I disrupted your—your life—I made a mistake—that’s impossible—my mistake—”

  I raised my fingers.

  CRACK!

  Everyone flinched.

“Can you not do that,” Arthur said blinking twice.

“Or at least warn us if you do,” my brother grumbled.

I placed a hand on her shoulder gently and she froze.

“I don’t know how many of you got accidentally summoned,” she said voice quivering and breathing deeply. From the looks of it she might hyperventilate at any moment. “From the looks of it, two. I mean your stats and, and, and—”

I squatted down in front of her. I made sure my voice was warm. Warmer than I usually let it be.

“Don’t worry,” I said softly. “I don’t blame you. Not even a little.”

“It’s just a title, a weird one,” I said with a small smile. “But you? You’re doing your best. You’re tired out of your mind, running on zero sleep, and still trying to take care of us.”

She stared up at me, eyes wide and shimmering.

“Honestly, I don’t know if something went wrong. But from the looks of it you managed to bring everyone here whole, safe and sound. With all our limbs intact. That counts for something. Okay?”

If you find this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the infringement.

Slowly… she nodded with a small smile returning on her face.

“Okay but for real, Vi,” Arthur finally said, breaking the silence. “Why the hell do you have a title about a radish shaped like a sexy butt?”

My head toward him. I was deeply offended. “Oh, NOW you want context?”

I stood up and rounded on the bastard. “I was twelve. It grew in our backyard. I dug it up, showed it to my mother, and she turned it into soup. As for why I have that title I don’t know, I have NO idea why the gods thought that deserved a title.”

“It was just a radish,” my mother said calmly, utterly unbothered by the absurdity. Then, as if the previous retort fest hadn’t happened at all, she added, “Ignoring everything else everyone said, I do have one question.”

I waited for my mother to speak.

  “Why is your name ‘Vi’?”

“Huh?” I blinked. “What do you mean? Everyone calls me that. I’ve called myself that and people have called me that ever since ever, don’t they?”

“No.” She pointed at the glowing crystal screen. “I meant, the name field shows only ‘Vi’. Not your full name.”

I turned to look. Everyone turned to look.

The screen, as if mocking me, displayed, Name: Vi

  I stared at it.

  Oh.

Shit. I forgot to overwrite the placeholder.

I shrugged. “I forgot to replace that part?”

My mother closed her eyes and sighed the sigh of a parent who has raised me for too long.

“Lady Celestia, you said earlier that titles can be used to our advantage,” she said. “Is that correct?”

  Celestia straightened immediately.

“Yes! Titles often influence skills, affinity growth, magical compatibility, direction, and even hidden class awakenings. Some are passive, some active, and some—” she shot me a strange look “—are… interpretive.”

  “Oi!”

Takashi raised a hand. “In that case, isn’t it possible that Vi’s status is bugged?”

“Lord Takashi, what does bugged mean? Is it full of insects?” Celestia asked, confused.

“No, no,” Takashi replied. “I meant broken. I mean, he wasn’t supposed to be summoned in the first place.”

Celestia’s eyes widened. “That—actually makes sense.” She turned to me again. “His readings might not be aligning properly. It may not be malfunctioning, but interpreting incorrectly due to… irregular summoning parameters.”

Why was this crazy mage getting excited? Did her delirium increase?

My mother placed a hand gently on Celestia’s shoulder. “Then can I ask for your help, lady Celestia? Please guide him through this.”

Celestia bowed deeply with surprising solemnity. “I vow I will. No matter how long it takes.”

“Thank you,” my mother said softly with a smile.

“Uhm yeah, that’s all very touching,” I said raising up my hand. “But I don’t need a minder or help with anything.”

Celestia turned back to the group with a renewed spark. “Then, let us proceed! There are still many plates to check!”

  “Oi!”

My brother stood up and stepped forward. “I don’t mind going next. Taka?”

Takashi handed my brother his plate. “Here you go.”

I huffed and sat down beside the two Americans who gave me smirks, for whatever reason. Then Arthur and Trayn stretched their arms like athletes preparing for a competition.

Everyone else settled down as my brother inserted both plates into the machine. Once my brother and Takashi’s plates finished cycling through the machine, everyone leaned forward to examine the results.

  Celestia practically vibrated with excitement.

“Look!” she exclaimed, pointing at the display for my brother. “Even at level 1, Lord William’s stat rating matches Lady Reika’s! That puts them third overall among the group—behind only lord Vi and… well, Lady Shizuku’s mother.”

My brother gave a modest shrug, trying not to look too pleased, while Shizuku groaned.

Arthur however, raised a hand and he leaned over, squinting at the screen, and muttered, “Uh—his title is… [Brother to Vi]? What the hell? Why doesn’t his parents also have like, ‘Father of Vi’ or even ‘Mother of Vi’?”

A collective pause swept through the room, half laughter, half bewilderment. Even Celestia blinked at the screen, momentarily confused before scratching her head in realization.

I, on the other hand, simply slumped back in my seat, exhaling a long, defeated sigh. “Of course,” I muttered to myself, “the system somehow decided my existence alone was enough to generate a title… a title.”

Nana baa-san shook her head with a quiet chuckle, while my mother pinched the bridge of her nose. Even the king raised a brow, amusement and disbelief warring in his expression.

Trayn’s grin widened. “Man, Vi, even your brother gets a title because of you! That’s, kind of broken, honestly.”

I groaned. “I don’t even want to know what comes next.”

Still, regardless of how I felt, the tension in the room shifted from shock to eager anticipation, and I knew we were only just scratching the surface of how absurd—and weirdly enough, how entertaining—these status plates were going to get.

Arthur got up next and inserted his and Trayn’s plates. The display lit up one as it showed their statuses.

Their stats were nothing outrageous, in fact it was rather solid and was strong enough that everyone nodded approvingly.

I stared and couldn’t help muttering, “Huh. Pretty generic.”

Both of them turned to me in perfect synchronization.

  “Generic?” Arthur scoffed.

“Wow, Vi, thanks,” Trayn added placing a hand over his chest. His tone and smile oozing with sarcasm. “Truly, your support means a lot to us, it’s overwhelming.”

I shrugged. “I mean, compared to my disaster of a status page? You two are basically limited edition normal.”

Arthur smacked my shoulder lightly. “You say that like it’s an insult.”

“It is,” I said. “But lovingly.”

That earned me twin eye-rolls. Before they could retort, the king cleared his throat, directing everyone’s attention to him.

“Your titles,” he said, brows furrowing. “This is—unusual. Can you please explain, or if it’s too personal, then I understand.”

Arthur and Trayn exchanged a brief look—an old, familiar one.

“It’s not like we were hiding it,” Trayn said with a shrug. “It’s from when we were a bit younger.”

“They beat a bunch of people up,” I cut in without ceremony and both of them chuckled.

“I mean, he’s not wrong,” Arthur admitted with a small smile.

“It was a bully,” Trayn clarified. “He used to pick on one of our friends. Real piece of work.”

“Then one day,” Arthur continued, “it just, turned into a three-on-two fight. Bully and his two lackeys versus us.”

“And we won,” Trayn said proudly. A few people looked relieved—others impressed. Their fathers however looked melancholic.

Hanzo leaned forward. “So why ‘wrongfully punished’? What happened to the bully?”

Arthur’s smile thinned. “His father was someone—influential. High in politics. Turns out, the reason why he was there because it wasn’t his first offense.”

“And in a town as small as Chico,” Trayn added, “connections pretty much decide everything.”

Arthur’s voice grew quieter. “And back then, you couldn’t just, post proof online. No way to call them out. The school suspended us for ‘starting the fight.’”

“We couldn’t graduate because of it,” Trayn said heavily. “Got held back.”

“But we didn’t stay,” Arthur finished. “We just… stopped going.”

A small silence slipped into the room.

The king’s expression tightened with disapproval—at the injustice.

Hanzo spoke gently. “And after that… the bully?”

“Transferred,” Arthur said flatly as he and Trayn both settled down.

From the corner of my eye, I observed them a bit. Their souls I mean. Then I sighed internally. They were disillusioned at the system of that place. Their move to Japan wasn’t just a change of scenery. It was escape. A reset. A way to get out of a place where fairness depended on whose father had more influence.

For those two, seeing it displayed so plainly… It hurt them more than they liked to show. But, there was no doubt in my mind, to help a friend, they would do it all over again.
