Checking the work computer was the right choice. The instant he opened it he was bombarded with messages and mails.

  First of all, his coworkers were asking what happened to him, why he left the team, and if he was having any problems. At the same time, some realized that he might also have something to do with Milagros leaving the team and asked about her too.

  That was the first wave of messages, then it came the second wave after Milagros was officially announced as the CRSO. The title was officially changed after Emilio’s suggestion to not generate any confusion. The full name of the title ended up being Chief Realm System Operations, making it a unique C - Suite title in KimTec.

  Given that his computer was almost exploding with messages that people started sending the instant they saw him online and that he was even re-added to the team’s chat to see if he could give some explanations, Emilio decided to at least tell them some things.

  He decided to write directly in the team channel and tell them that both him and Milagros did well in the Trials and were reassigned. He also added he would not be online most of the time and that there should be some official communications with more news soon.

  As soon as he sent the message, the amount of messages he received almost made his computer crash. Something that was stopped by some of the team leads when they realized that whatever he knew might be confidential.

  Even if the whole team was kind of desperate for some news after one of their top performers and the manager left at the same time, he decided to leave it be. Someone else was going to take charge and he knew most people in the team were capable.

  Instead, Emilio decided to check his e-mail to see if there was something interesting in there, or maybe if he had to resend something to someone else.

  He found that there was an online meeting for all the enterprise at 9:30 titled ‘Urgent System Information. MANDATORY’ which he would not miss. If his guess was right, he might know most of the information that was going to be announced, but he had to see what was going to be announced.

  He also found he had a mail from Milagros informing him of the delivery that was scheduled, with the bakery phone number, and asking to keep her updated about the amount of food they needed.

  She also added that even if they were not scheduled yet, he should expect some lunch and even dinner. Emilio wondered why she also added the dinner if given that they had not talked about that the previous day, but he was not going to reject it.

  There were also some updates on the teachers. Milagros worked as effectively as always and managed to get them a teacher to train them in self defense and shooting in just one night. She was called Gabriela Pasternac, and was going to arrive at their house in the afternoon to meet them.

  The second teacher was quite harder to find, but she promised he was making some advancements on the issue.

  There was also a mail from Marcos Di Tella remarking the importance of the System, announcing Milagros as the new CRSO and announcing the urgent meeting. It was marked as mandatory and it was even recommended for managers and coworkers to call people that were on time off or sick, as long as they were able to connect and saying that the hour would be paid quadruple if that was the case.

  Nice, they decided to act immediately. It is good that the information is in the hands of capable people.

  After he checked everything else, Emilio decided to look into the team chat messages again and found a pinned message, liked by almost all the team, with an apology for trying to get confidential information from him and wishing him good luck in his new job.

  Emilio smiled when he read that message and knew that he had to answer that one. He thanked them and told them not to miss the call for the System, hinting they might get more information there.

  With everything else done and the meeting about to start, Emilio decided to let her niece know about the communication. Given that she was completely involved, Emlilio decided she should be able to join in if she wanted.

  A few minutes later, Emilio and Amelia were sitting in the living room streaming KimTec’s internal broadcast into the TV. Amelia even had a bowl of popcorn as if she was watching a movie. After all, it was going to be a real show.

  As the stream started Marcos appeared on the screen with a really serious look on his face.

  “Good morning everyone and I’m sorry for having this meeting on such short notice. I’m afraid that there is an urgent matter, much more than anybody expected just a few days ago.

  “I will start by saying that we are about to go through a huge change and we hope all of you will stay with us in the turbulent times. To leave this clear, we are not firing anyone and we might even hire more people. The big change has to do with the Real System that all of us are experiencing since last Thursday.

  “We were lucky to be able to find an informant with confidential information, allowing us to know how to move right now. Let me tell you with full honesty that we are about to experience some uncertain times, full of changes and that the results can be catastrophic. At the same time, if we are lucky and put in the work we might actually end up better than before.

  “As of this moment, I am officially announcing a public press conference today at four o’clock to share with the world some of the worst news of what's to come. We decided to share it publicly because we believe it will impact all humanity. We will announce it on our official web page after we finish this call and contact all news outlets and the government. Will be streaming it and we recommend everyone to share the existence of the conference to everyone you know

  “I know that you are uncertain, but let me tell you that we are preparing ourselves to invest all of what we need with the changes to come. For that reason we created a new executive post and we ascended Milagros Primiterra as Chief Realm System Officer. The System is our biggest and only priority, and she has the last say on everything related to it. Milagros, I'll let you have the word.”

  The image on the TV changed from Marcos’ face to Milagros.

  “Hello everyone. I am Milagros Primiterra, the new CRSO. I am really happy to be selected for this job and will do my best on it, but the situation is dire and there will be a series of changes applicable as of right now.

  “The System will bring a threat to the whole planet, but it will also bring new opportunities, so we are embracing it fully. I will share some information right now and you will receive a mail with all of the information we can tell you given the System restrictions after the press conference. Keep in mind that it is confidential and don’t share it.

  “For the moment, the first thing to announce is that the usual work for all teams will stop right now. You will receive information on what to do after the public broadcast. There are a few exceptions like payroll, and you will be notified if it is your case. For the rest of the employees, there are two things that have to be done right now.

  “The first one is to report your Stats to your superior. The team leads and managers have to report all of the Stats shared with them. We want an assembled list of all Stats by midday today.

  “All team leads have to verify it by checking the System messages of the employees to report it. You can share your Stats officially with the System by just asking it to do it and this can’t be falsified. Of course, if you don’t want to share them we can’t make you, but keep in mind that extra resources will be distributed in accordance to your Stats.

  “If you had a starting Stat at 2, you will get a 5% raise in your salary for each Stat in 2, if you had a Stat in 3 then it is a 10%, in 4 then a 30%, and in 5 a 50% raise. Of course, you have to report your Stats to receive the raise.

  “As long as you had at least a 3 in one Stat, you might be offered a change of job to focus on the System.

  “At the same time, taking the Starting Trial is now mandatory and you will be doing it this afternoon. Doing the Trial will count as work and if you stay longer than your working hours inside, you will be paid overtime.

  “If you do well in the Trial, you will also get raises as long as you report your results. You can show your original Stats or your current Stats as long as you ask the System, so it is easy to know by how much they’ve changed.

  “Each Stat upgraded in the Trial will be an extra 15% pay rise. Just to be clear, Free Stats won’t count, so it will be one rise per 2 points raised. Also, anyone who could get 3 points in the Trial might get extra offers to change their job.

  “We also have a few tips for you to consider: do not use Free points outside of the Monolith and the lower the Stat, the easier it is to level it up without a Free Point.

  “The Trials you do and the things you purchase inside will allow us to tell you more information and we might even be able to recommend to you what to buy.

  “That is all of what I had to say. I will proceed to answer your questions. You should have a link to leave them and I will answer as many as I can. Keep in mind that tomorrow we will have another meeting for more questions you might have after the public broadcast.”

  The rest of the meeting were questions about what to do with the current work, with the answer being to put it on hold, and a lot of questions whose answer was to wait until the public broadcast.

  Not even ten minutes after the meeting ended, the news were already reporting about Kimtec’s press conference and its internal broadcast together with many, many theories about who was the secret informant. None of those theories, no matter how crazy they were, were pointed towards a KimTec employee called Emilio Castro.
