Chapter 15. The Opening of War (2)

The First Great General, Ashurgar, who carried two massive swords crossed on his back, spoke.

“So those are the ones? As expected, ordinary soldiers won’t be enough.”

The Second Great General, Kashirgal, a hulking figure over four meters tall with the appearance of a beast, growled in reply.

“I’ll send my troops first, grrrr. Abarkash, you handle the archers.”

The Third Great General, Abarkash, whose entire body was concealed beneath a robe and a mask, nodded. The Fourth Great General, Neragalsu, wearing a green tunic and a short skirt, added,

“Raise a sandstorm. We’ll wipe them out in one sweep.”

The Fifth Great General was Marbala, high priestess of the healing god Ginsu. She wore a white robe and carried a long staff.

“How exciting. I’ve had nothing but scarecrows to deal with so far—there’s been no chance for me to step in.”

Kashirgal cleared his throat, then unleashed a tremendous roar. As the roar spread through Uruk’s main force, the soldiers felt their blood boil with exhilaration. It was Kashirgal’s signature ability, War Cry, which increased the strength and combat power of allied troops.

Soon, Kashirgal’s monster corps charged forward all at once. They were an assault unit composed of monsters and beasts gathered by the Beast King Kashirgal. Monstrous creatures of all kinds, ranging from four to six meters in height, rushed toward the city wall at terrifying speed.

Eshiel shouted to the archer corps.

“Fire where I fire—follow my aim!”

As Eshiel leveled a flaming arrow at the monsters, the archers all took aim in unison.

  Boom!

With an explosion, two monsters were blown down. When the second arrow was released, sand suddenly began to swirl violently through the air. The sand clumped together midair and formed a massive canopy, blocking the archers’ attacks. It was Abarkash’s signature technique, Sand Roof.

With the archers’ assault blocked, hundreds of monsters safely reached the wall and began climbing it all at once. At that moment, dozens of massive vines burst forth from the ground beneath the wall. The writhing vines bound the climbing monsters one by one, restraining them.

As Tamar swung Ishtar’s staff, rain poured down over the vines. The vines bloomed with flowers and grew larger and larger. Just as the monsters trapped within them screamed in agony—

Neragalsu leapt forward and fired a series of green, dagger-shaped projectiles. The rotating green daggers struck the vines, which quickly began to wither. Neragalsu was a poison wielder, capable of using a wide variety of lethal toxins. Dozens of massive vines withered one after another.

As the monsters shook free and continued climbing the wall, Eshiel and the archer corps unleashed a volley of arrows.

At Ashurgar’s command, the entire Uruk army surged toward the wall. The soldiers of Kish fired arrows and hurled stones, but the Sand Roof protected the attackers. Uruk’s troops set ladders against the wall and began the siege.

Elaton moved about wielding his shield and war hammer, striking down monsters climbing the wall, while Tamar continuously generated vines, desperately dragging soldiers and monsters off the ramparts. The soldiers of Kish pushed ladders away or poured bitumen and set it ablaze, continuing their desperate resistance.

In the ferocious battle, corpses quickly began to pile up across the battlefield.

Then, at a certain moment, a dark shadow fell across the moonlight. The area was enveloped in a bluish glow, and a chilling presence spread outward. From the corpses piled beneath the wall, hundreds of evil spirits began to rise one by one. The horrifying spirits, emitting blue light from their eyes, let out grotesque cries.

It was the summoning of Azael’s legion of evil spirits.
