Far in the future ...

  Earth finally made first contact with an alien species and agreed to become part of a ‘Galactic Association’ that offered an abundance of resources for post-scarcity and protection against predatory interstellar species.

  An alien BOD's ship arrived and orbited Earth, zapping every satellite and then collecting all the space junk. It also destroyed all fossil fuel and nuclear power plants with lasers, including carbon-emitting factories, machines, and means of transportation.
