Chapter 44: Awakening Tides

The teacups clinked softly as everyone gathered in the mansion hall. Calm chatter drifted through the room, though the faint hum of newly awakened systems lingered, almost like a secret vibrating beneath the surface.

Then, almost simultaneously, notifications appeared before the remaining family members. One by one, their systems manifested. A subtle hum of power filled the air. Eyes widened, hearts quickened. Something had changed… though what exactly, no one yet knew.

Adil leaned toward Kurey?, eyes bright. “Wow… does it feel… different to you too? Like, there’s something buzzing in the air?”

Kurey? grinned, barely containing his excitement, though a flicker of tension ran across his face. “Yeah! I feel it… it’s like it’s alive. I can’t believe this is actually happening.”

Efsun, overhearing, tilted her head, her own excitement barely hidden. “Of course it’s happening! But don’t just feel it—push it. Try something new. That’s the only way you’ll really know what it can do.”

Efsane’s lips curled into a teasing smirk, bouncing with energy. “Ha! Look at you, all confident, Efsun. Lucky for you, I’m here to make sure you don’t go overboard while everyone else catches up.”

Efsun’s eyes narrowed. You? Don’t make me laugh.

Adil and Kurey? exchanged glances, trying not to smile. “Your rivalry is endless, isn’t it?” Adil whispered.

Kurey? shrugged. “And it’ll never end. Ever.”

Sahra looked at Yusuf. “Are you going to show me anything today?”

Yusuf shook his head, serious. “Not yet. I need to understand it first. Can’t teach what I don’t know.”

Sahra pouted. “Typical. Always keeping secrets.”

Sahra tilted her head. “Does it… react around other people?”

Yusuf hesitated. “Yeah. Especially around people I care about. Subtle… but noticeable.”

The room fell quiet. The hum of their systems pulsed softly, like a slow, steady heartbeat.

Emrah, observing calmly from the side, finally spoke. “Questions about your systems, or anything you’ve noticed… Efsun and Efsane will answer. Listen carefully.”

Sahra glanced at Yusuf, squeezing his hand gently. “I guess we’ll figure it out together, step by step.”

  Yusuf nodded. “Yeah. Together.”

Adil stepped forward, bowing slightly. “Thank you for everything, Emrah. Truly.”

Kurey? nodded, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “We’ll trust Efsun and Efsane to guide us.”

With that, both families gathered their belongings and departed. The hall fell silent once more.

Emrah let out a long, quiet breath. I’m tired beyond comprehension. I need a break, even if it’s just a little.

Meanwhile, in the underground government intelligence center, Elif sat across from the Director. The office was bathed in harsh white light, cutting through the tense air like a blade.

“Elif,” the Director said sharply, his gaze unwavering, “your brother’s judgment… is compromised. Love clouds him. You will be sent to stay close to Emrah. Observe, report, and… influence subtly if necessary.”

Elif’s eyes narrowed. “You want me to get close to him? Personally?”

The Director nodded. “Yes. Consider it a precaution. Your loyalty and discretion are paramount. Do not underestimate this mission.”

Elif exhaled slowly, pressing her lips into a thin line. “Understood. I won’t fail.”

Moments later, Elif was on the phone with Yusuf.

“Big brother, I’m coming to the mansion. New mission… I need to observe Emrah Aybeyli up close,” she said, cheerful but edged with seriousness. “Tell everyone I’m arriving from Trabzon — that’s why I’m at the airport.”

Yusuf looked up from where Sahra reviewed her system notes, raising an eyebrow. “Wait… you’re here? I wanted to spend today with Sahra.”

Aslan leaned back lazily. “Want me to pick her up from the airport?”

Yusuf shook his head. “No, it’s fine… Emrah can handle it.”

  Sahra blinked. “You’ll do it?”

Emrah offered a faint smile, leaning back in his chair. “I could use a little break from all this. Picking up your sister won’t be a problem.”

Sahra nodded, quickly sending him Elif’s photo. “Perfect. She’s just landed. Thank you, Emrah.”

After an hour’s drive, Emrah arrived at the terminal. Spotting Elif waiting at the arrivals gate, he approached and gestured for her to follow.

“Thanks for coming,” Elif said quietly as she got into the car.

“No problem,” Emrah replied, voice calm but tinged with fatigue. A small break from the mansion… maybe this will clear my head.

As they drove, the city lights blurred past, the engine’s hum filling the silence.

Elif broke it first. “So… what’s really going on?”

  Emrah smirked faintly. “Nothing unusual.”

Elif raised an eyebrow. “You’re always this mysterious, huh?”

Before he could answer, Emrah’s phone buzzed sharply. Kemal.

“Talk to me,” Emrah said, answering.

“Come. Now. I found the supplier,” Kemal said urgently.

  Emrah’s expression tightened. “Where?”

“No time. Just get here. It’s big,” Kemal replied.

Exhaling, Emrah glanced at Elif. “We’re diverting. Something urgent came up. I’ll handle it first before taking you to the mansion.”

Elif nodded, leaning forward slightly, curiosity piqued. “Understood.”

Without hesitation, Emrah turned the wheel, guiding the car through the streets.

Half an hour later, they arrived at a quiet, dimly lit warehouse on the city outskirts. Kemal was already waiting, his expression grim.

Emrah glanced at Elif. “Stay in the car. It’s safer.”

Elif nodded, sliding into the back seat, pretending to relax. But her eyes narrowed, subtly positioning herself to hear everything. This is my chance to learn more.

  Stepping out, Emrah approached Kemal.

“Something big is happening,” Kemal said immediately. “All five major drug families are involved. The supplier we tracked… it’s tied to the chocolate cake drug. Whoever controls this will dominate the streets for months, maybe years.”

Emrah’s jaw tightened. “Understood. Keep me updated on every move. No mistakes.”

From the car, Elif strained to catch every word. So this is how dangerous it really is… and Emrah… he’s calm. Too calm.

She leaned slightly forward as they continued.

“It’s worse than I thought,” she whispered to herself, mentally noting every detail.

“It always is,” Emrah replied aloud. “But knowing is the first step to controlling it.”

After finalizing the plans, Emrah returned to the car. Elif slid back, masking the intensity of her attention with the appearance of resting.

“Ready to go?” Emrah asked, sliding in behind the wheel.

  Elif smiled faintly. “Always.”

When they arrived at the mansion, Elif was greeted warmly. Family members were curious but respectful of her quiet composure.

Sahra nudged Yusuf. “So… she’s actually nice.”

Yusuf chuckled. “She always is… until the mission starts.”

Emrah retreated to his room, letting the morning’s weight settle. Moments later, Sofia appeared, leaning casually in the doorway, a faint smile on her lips.

“Emrah,” she said softly, “we used to… be in love. And now you’re marrying two girls you don’t love. You’re doing yourself a disservice.”

Emrah’s gaze remained steady. “Not everything you desire is best for you. Besides… who says I don’t love them?”

Sofia stepped closer, brushing a strand of hair from her face, pressing her lips to his. For a moment, Emrah paused — then kissed her back.

Pulling away, Sofia smiled faintly. “I got my answer,” she said, and left.

Emrah sank back into his chair, mind racing. Now I have to think about my relationships too…

Before he could dwell, a commotion erupted outside. A bloodied man from the Aybeyli neighborhood staggered into the mansion hall, collapsing at Emir Aybeyli’s feet.

“They’ve been selling drugs… in our neighborhood,” the man gasped. “We tried stopping them… but they shot anyone who interfered!”

Emrah heard this and went downstairs instantly.

Emir’s jaw tightened, eyes dark with concern. “This… this is happening in our territory. We need to stop this immediately.”

Sahra and Yusuf exchanged worried glances. “Looks like the calm didn’t last,” Yusuf muttered.

Emrah’s gaze sharpened. “Gather everyone. We’re returning to the neighborhood. It’s time to handle this personally.”
