Chapter 10

Steven, seated at his desk in class, continuously tapped his finger on his desk while resting his hand on his knuckles, waiting for the class to end. He was barely paying any attention to what the teacher was saying as she was giving a lecture about the Embera, the blazing kingdom of fire dragon warriors, and how it was completely wiped out during the Great Elemental War. Steven couldn’t care less about the history lesson, as his mind was too preoccupied with thoughts about David and what he was doing in his new special class. These thoughts, however, only served to irritate and enrage him, making him more eager to hear that annoying, ear-splitting bell so he could go reduce something to ashes. It seemed as though time was the enemy at the moment, as its hand seemed to run at a snail’s pace, which only made Steven madder, so much so that he was practically fuming with rage. A fierce, hot, and intense aura of flames then surrounded him, causing the student sitting close to him to move away due to the intense heat of the aura and the fact that they could tell that Steven was a ticking time bomb set to blow at any minute.

Steven, as he sat there in class tapping his fingers on his desk, wondering when that stupid lecture was going to be over, couldn’t stop himself from wondering what on earth David was doing in his new class. And the very moment that that thought crossed his mind, the surrounding aura burst with blazing hot intensity that even startled and might have scared the teacher a bit.

Meanwhile, in the hidden chamber in the forest underneath the lake, David, in one of the many rooms, sat down on a chair with a massive book placed before him, and on its cover was the crest of the golden dragon.

“The Dragon Chronicles is the greatest compilation of the history of the dragon warrior. Within its pages is every significant event all throughout the history of the world,” said Richard.

“As the next Golden Dragon Warrior, you’re expected to read and study it page by page,” added Araban.

David, upon hearing what Araban said, looked at the towering book before him, which looked as though it had at the very least a hundred million pages within it, before looking back at them and saying with a mix of both shock, horror, and dread in his voice, “page by page.”

Richard, upon seeing the look of shock and terror on David’s face, cleared his throat before saying, “Traditionally, you were meant to begin your studies from a younger age, but given the unfortunate circumstances.”

Richard did nothing to sway David’s heart as he continued looking at the massive book he was expected to study ‘page by page.’

Richard then sighed before saying, “I don’t know what is wrong with this generation, honestly. In my day, I would read the entirety of the Dragon Chronicle before the crack of dawn.”

David, upon hearing what Araban said, looked at him with a look of pure and utter shock, wondering if everyone born during his time were scholars who didn’t have anything better to do than read all day.

Richard then walked up to David before saying, “Don’t worry, David, you don’t have to spend all day, every day, reading the chronicles. However, there are some key significant events you need to know as the Golden Dragon Warrior that will help you understand more about yourself and the legacy you are a part of.”

David, upon hearing Richard, simply let out a breath before saying, “Alright, let’s get to studying.”

Richard then smiled at David before saying, “Alright then, let’s start from the very beginning.

Richard then opened up the chronicles and began the lesson.

Flani, standing by the corner watching as Richard began the lesson, teaching David of the rich history of the dragon warriors, couldn’t help but smile upon seeing the happiness he seemed to have on finally being able to fulfill his responsibility as an Overseer. She then let out a deep sigh, recalling how distraught he was on that fateful day. The final battle between the Dark Dragon Lord and Ibierana was a battle she could never forget. Recall how the earth and the sky looked as though it was about to collapse, the hordes of dark dragon warriors sweeping through the land. Every time she turned, she could only see chaos and madness. The air was tainted with a scent of ash and blood. Bang, bang, bang, explosion, and screams were all that could be heard. *Sigh,* what a battle. It felt as though the entire world was fighting that day, fighting to preserve itself, but at the cost of its greatest protector. With a massive bang that shook the entire world right down to its core, silence swept over the land, and as the dust and smoke cleared, neither the Dark Dragon Lord nor Ibierana stood triumphantly as the victor.

It was a dark day for everyone, all the warriors that fought that day, and the entirety of the world. Soon after that, the flapping of a dragon’s wings could be heard as the dark dragon warrior slowly retreated, fleeing away like the cowards they were without the power of their great master to defend. The land that was once roaring and booming grew silent in an instant. Then one by one, every warrior present fell down to their knees amidst the rubble and carnage that surrounded them and began to collectively mourn the great loss that had befallen the world with the departure of a warrior as strong and as noble as Ibierana.

Flani and Ibierana were never particularly close; if anything, Ibierana’s good and sweet nature annoyed her, seeing her as a na?ve fool who put too much trust and hope in people. She had a vulnerable heart that was easy to exploit, and Flani believed she was the worst person to begin a power as great as that of the golden dragon warrior, seeing her as lacking the ruthlessness to do what needed to be done and yet.

Drip, drip, it fell down slowly, moving from her eyelids to her cheeks and then down to the ground below. One drop became two drops, two drops became three, and soon a stream slowly flowed down her eyes as she knelt down along with her brethren to mourn their fallen hero. She then felt someone come close to her and embrace her. Normally she detested anyone coming too close to her, much less touching, but at that moment she didn’t really mind it; in fact, she needed to feel the warmth of something at moment as her entire body felt cold and dead, as though someone had put out the flames of life burning with her.

“It’s…” spoke his voice, tinged with uncertainty.

“…going to be okay,” it might have been a statement Richard himself could not bring himself to believe even after so many years had passed, but Flani was able to find comfort in them even though she didn’t believe in them as well.

Flani then napped back to reality upon feeling something caress her cheeks as it trailed down her face.

“A tear, so the blazing princess does have a heart,” said Boma.

“Don’t call me that,” Flani said with a stern voice and glare so strong one could swear it burned.

Boma then snickered a little at her response, “You fire dragon warriors are way too hot-tempered.

Flani, upon hearing what Boma said, just grunted, causing Boma to laugh even more.

“See, it really doesn’t take much to set you people off,” said Boma as she continued laughing.

Flani just tolerated Boma’s words and remained silent, fighting the intense urge to reduce to ashes right where she stood.

Boma then stopped and shifted her gaze to David, who was busy being taught by Araban and Richard.

“I know it’s hard to believe that he’s really her kid, but I see it. He has her spirit”, said Boma in a serious tone.

Flani, upon hearing what Boma said, shifted her gaze back to David before smiling as she recalled what she thought of him when she first saw him. He looked scrawny, weak, and na?ve just like her, and just like her, he was far more than his appearance perceived him to be. Richard created the academy in the hopes he would be able to foster strong and able dragon warriors who uphold the ideals the Golden Village believed to honor his people and the legacy of the Golden Dragon Warrior, and David at first glance didn’t seem like he would be a good fit for the academy, which she believed up until she witnessed who he was capable of for herself.

Strength and a noble heart, were the two most important traits Richard sought after, and those were traits David possessed, recalling how he was willing to fight one of the most skilled students of the academy, a fight he had no reason to believe he could win but still chose to fight in order to protect Flora, who had only just met, just like his mother. It seemed as though the apple didn’t fall far from the tree, but then again, sigh,* Flani recalled the power she witnessed during the dark dragon warriors attack on the academy, recalling the unrelenting and frightful fury in David’s eyes along with that frightened and overwhelming power radiating from him. Flani would have never believed that the son of Ibierana could wield such a frightful and devastating power if she hadn’t witnessed it for herself.

“…he fought with a malice and vengeance in his eyes that didn’t come from a scared child; it came from bitterness, anger, and frustration that was harbored deep within the darkest recesses of the child’s soul.”

Flani then cast her gaze on David once more, filling with a tinge of fear and uncertainty way down on her heart before taking a deep breath. In that moment she recalled what Richard said when she asked about him still choosing to keep David in the academy and couldn’t help but agree with him. Knowing fully well that his mere presence in the academy was a possession of the entirety of the academy but choosing to take it if it meant they could cling on desperately to the ray of hope brought not just to the academy but to the entirety of the world. She glanced at David once more, knowing that he had the power to either save the world or doom it, and all she could do was hope and have faith that he would choose to be the world’s salvation and not its destroyer.
