The message appeared at 9:17 a.m. No alarms rang. No skies split open. Phones didn’t buzz, and power didn’t flicker. The world simply paused, just long enough for every living person to blink at the translucent blue text hovering at the edge of their vision.

[Welcome, User.]
Zander thought it was a migraine. He was halfway through pouring coffee when the words surfaced, crisp and impossibly real, floating like glass etched with light. He blinked once. Twice. The message didn’t fade. “What the hell…” he muttered. The text vanished, replaced by the next message.

Then it was gone. No explosion. No follow-up. Just the taste of burned coffee and the unsettling sense that something immense had brushed against the world and decided not to push, yet. The first few days were disappointing. People online called it The Overlay, The Patch, The Blue Screen. Conspiracy theories bloomed and died within hours. Governments denied involvement. Tech companies swore it wasn’t theirs. Doctors found nothing wrong with anyone reporting the messages. Most people stopped talking about it by the end of the week. Because nothing changed. No stats. No powers. No monsters. Just a faint icon some claimed they could focus on if they tried hard enough, like a word on the tip of the mind. Life went on.
Until the system started being… helpful. Zander noticed it while jogging in the park. He’d always been average. Average endurance, average strength, average at everything that mattered. But that morning, his breathing steadied faster than usual. His legs didn’t burn as quickly. A subtle notification slid into view as he slowed to a walk.
[Endurance +0.1]
He stopped dead. The message faded before he could react, but his heart hammered all the same. That night, he tested it. Push-ups, planks, a miserable attempt at pull-ups. Each time, after enough effort, the same quiet reward appeared. Within weeks, people were structuring their lives around the system. Fitness apps lost relevance overnight. Gyms filled. Study groups reported faster learning. Artists claimed sharper focus. The system never explained itself, never advertised but it rewarded effort with undeniable results and humanity leaned in.
Things returned to normal for me. The system and its benefits where addictive yes, but quickly became the norm. I spent most of my time trying to find a job. I dabbled in photography in high school and was even in a photography club for a few years. Unfortunately I live in the real world and having fun taking pictures wasn't paying the bills, but after a few years of job hopping I finally landed a gig doing what I loved. For now it was just one gig taking pictures of a property in the middle of nowhere Montana. The company that hired me manages many properties all over the united states so this could be great for building my portfolio. I wasn't given much information about what they wanted pictures of exactly.
Apparently they are selling this particular property and want me to make it look appealing. Whatever that means exactly for a property that is 1300 acres in the Flathead National Forest, I am not sure yet. It is only my second day here after getting settled into the hunting lodge yesterday. I've never been hunting but I have seen plenty of videos of home tours on the internet. Hopefully my own version of middle of nowhere cribs makes my client happy. I don't really know what all is on the property outside of the highlights I was given when the job was described to me. There is a lake, a cave and there is even a waterfall. I only have 1300 acres of pretty dense forest to comb through to find them.
Well just sitting in the lodge isn't getting me any closer to completing the contract. I grab my camera and my pack and head out. The lodge is on the southern side of the property so I check my compass and just start heading north. This is a hunting lodge that is rented out for most of the year so it wasn't hard to find a trail heading the correct direction. Maybe this will take me somewhere cool and I can get the pictures I need for the day and just start exploring. I only have a week here to get everything done so I can't waste too much time.
This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.
After an hour or so of following the trail all I've seen is a bunch of trees and not much else. After all this is a forest but I was hoping I would see something of interest at least. Maybe I should leave the trail? This probably just goes to a hunting blind or something. I haven't spent a lot of time in the woods like this but it shouldn't be too hard to find my way back. I hope.
I have a few aerial photos of the area that I am in so I roughly know where I am. There should be a clearing half a mile to the west so I start heading in that direction. After 20 minutes or so I found the clearing. "See I told you it wouldn't be that hard." "You just got lucky this time." The best part about being the only one out here is nobody can judge me for talking to my self. I brought my drone with me and this is a great spot to launch it from.
I started looking around with the drone to see if I can find any sign of this lake or waterfall. I do find the lake but it is a little too far away for today. I can plan a day trip and bring my tent to get some good lake photos. I do see an opening that could be the cave though. Just like I am not a hunter, I am also not a cave diver. It probably wouldn't be a good look if I didn't at least take pictures from the outside though. They only gave me 3 highlights for the whole place after all.
I loaded my drone back up and started heading to the location I thought the cave entrance might be. I had to launch the drone a few more times to make sure I was going to the right direction but I eventually made it to the cave. Maybe there is a cave system that would be cool to explore but from the outside it doesn't look like much. Really just a hole a little ways up the mountain. I snap a few pictures from where I am and start making my way to the entrance. I'm not too impressed with my pictures of this place so far.
If I want this to help my career I need to get some cool shots. Maybe going into the cave and taking a shot looming out would be good? The entrance to the cave looks small but opens into a larger area. I wonder if this area has many bears? Probably should have wondered that before I wondered into a cave that could have a bear but luckily the only thing in the cave was me. Well there's nothing in here trying to eat me so I unload my pack and fish out my water and a snack. I also pull out my lamp and flashlight.
I won't go too deep but I at least want to take a look around to see the best spots to take pictures of. After heading to what I thought was the back of the cave I realized it was actually a bend. It looks like a single tunnel, I will go until it forks and head back out. Getting lost in a cave nowhere near civilization is a great way to die and your body never be found. I'm actually enjoying this a lot more than I thought I would. Maybe after this trip I will look into cave diving a little more. Probably with a guide and a friend next time though. I wonder what Greg is doing these days he might...
Did something move against the wall? I start moving closer and reach my hand out. My instincts screamed at me to pull my hand back and run. Before I could do anything the thing unfolded from between the stone like a nightmare remembering its shape. Too many limbs. Too many joints bending the wrong way. Its skin looked like stone stretched over muscle, eyes glowing with a dull amber hunger.I turned and ran.
The system responded instantly.

I tripped. Rolled. Came up with a rock in my hands as the monster lunged. There was no skill. No heroic clarity. Just terror and pain and the realization that if I didn’t fight, I would die here and no one would ever know. I swung the rock with everything I had. It hit the monster right in the side of the head.

I screamed and kept swinging. The monster collapsed and I turned around and ran as fast as I could manage. I stopped at the exit of the cave to listen for any movement. I could hear stones scrapping and dragging. It's moving slowly. Should I try to kill it? No I should run and get far away from this place. What even was that thing? As I turn around I get another notification.
[You have killed Living stone LVL 1]
Huh? I guess that thing was a living stone. Whatever that means.

I should have known. How could something that comes and touches the mind of everything in the world have been so simple.
