Chapter Fifthteen: The World-Eater

The "World-Eater" didn't roar. It hissed with the sound of a thousand corrupted audio files.

It was a serpentine titan of shifting geometry, its body composed of the very terrain it had already consumed. One segment of its "flesh" was a patch of Oakhaven’s cobblestone; another was the shimmering surface of a lake from the Forbidden Peaks. It was the System’s ultimate recycler, and it was currently focused entirely on the two "Illegal Assets" sprinting through the muck.

"Kaelen! The ground is disappearing!" Valen screamed.

Behind them, the Swamp of Revisions was simply... ending. Where the World-Eater’s shadow fell, the water and the trees vanished into a white, featureless void.

[NOTICE: ZONE 04 IS BEING DECOMMISSIONED] [ESTIMATED TIME TO TOTAL ERASURE: 02:45]

"Don't look back, Valen! Focus on the coordinates!" Kaelen’s legs felt like they were made of lead, but his [Glitch-Walker] Agility pushed him forward. He gripped the hilt of the [System-Breaker]. The sword was vibrating against his hip, its "True Damage" property humming in response to the massive entity behind them.

"We can't outrun it!" Valen cried, his new [Unwritten Crown] glowing with a pale, frantic light on his brow. "It’s faster than the world!"

"We don't outrun it," Kaelen grit his teeth, his eyes scanning the horizon for the "Faraday Shielding" of the Scrapheap Castle. "We desync it!"

Kaelen skidded to a halt, spinning around to face the behemoth. The World-Eater towered above them, a mountain of "0s" and "1s" that blotted out the bruised sky. It lunged, its maw opening to reveal a throat of pure, blinding static.

"Valen! The Crown! Use the 'Admin-Lite' command! Force the local gravity to invert!"

  "I don't know how!"

  "DON'T THINK, JUST EDIT!"

Valen squeezed his eyes shut. He didn't reach for a spell; he reached for the "Feeling" of the world. He felt the weight of the air, the pull of the muck, and he pushed.

[COMMAND RECEIVED: GRAVITY_INVERT (LOCAL)] [WARNING: SYSTEM UNSTABLE]

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Suddenly, the swamp wasn't down anymore. Kaelen and Valen were "falling" toward the sky. The World-Eater, designed to consume the floor, overshot them by a mile, its massive head crashing into the void where the ground used to be.

[COMBO TRIGGERED: 'FLIGHT OF THE ANOMALY']

"I'm doing it! Kaelen, I'm doing it!" Valen laughed, a sound of pure, terrified adrenaline. They were drifting through the air, "falling" toward the distant peaks of the Border Lands.

"Keep your focus, Valen! The System is going to 'Patch' that command any second!"

Kaelen wasn't wrong. The sky around them began to turn red. The World-Eater coiled in the air, its body twisting like a snake in water as it recalculated its pathing. It let out a burst of "Static-Breath"—a wave of white noise that stripped the color from Kaelen’s tunic.

  [SOUL-BURN: 35%] [HP: 110/240]

Kaelen drew the [System-Breaker]. The blade didn't reflect the light; it ate it. As the World-Eater lunged again, Kaelen didn't parry. He swung the blade at the "Air" in front of him.

  SHING.

The sword didn't cut flesh. It cut the Connection. A massive "Error Log" appeared in the air, a wall of red text that acted as a physical barrier. The World-Eater slammed into the error message, its momentum coming to a jarring, glitchy halt.

[TRUE DAMAGE DEALT: NARRATIVE INTEGRITY REDUCED]

"That bought us ten seconds!" Kaelen grabbed Valen’s collar, using the momentum of the gravity-flip to hurl them both toward the shimmering blue dome of the Scrapheap Castle.

They hit the shield at terminal velocity.

  POP.

The sensation was like being pushed through a soap bubble. One moment they were in the red-sky hell of a dying zone; the next, they were tumbling onto the cold, stone floor of Dane’s Great Hall.

The World-Eater slammed into the shield outside, its massive form rippling against the blue energy. It let out one final, discordant screech before the System "Recalled" it. The zone was gone. Outside the shield, there was only the white void.

Kaelen lay on the floor, his chest heaving, his hand still white-knuckled around the hilt of the System-Breaker.

Dane the Debugger stepped down from his throne, his green-text eyes scanning the two of them. He looked at the data-drive in Kaelen’s hand, then at the glowing crown on Valen’s head.

"You actually did it," Dane said, his voice dropping an octave. "You brought back a Legacy Weapon. And you... you didn't just survive the World-Eater. You broke its pathing."

Valen sat up, his crown flickering out. He looked at his hands, which were still trembling. "It felt... like the world was made of paper, Kaelen. I just had to fold it."

Dane looked at Kaelen. "You’ve changed the game, 114. The System isn't just trying to 'Reset' you anymore. You’ve moved from a 'Bug' to a 'Virus.' And you know what they do to viruses."

"They quarantine them," Kaelen said, standing up.

"No," Dane said, looking out at the white void where the swamp used to be. "They delete the entire folder. We have to move. The Scrapheap isn't safe anymore. The King is coming for the drive."

Kaelen looked at the drive. "Then let's see what's inside. If we're going to be deleted, I want to know why."
