Chapter 7 — Stranger in the Shadows
The alley beside the bank was drenched in flashing lights.
Red and blue reflections flickered across cracked concrete walls, turning the narrow space into a restless blur. Police cars and ambulances lined the street beyond the barricades, their sirens fading as officers escorted shaken bank employees to safety.
The chaos was slowly settling.
Ray stood quietly against the wall, half-hidden in shadow.
He wiped a thin streak of blood from his sleeve—
not his own.
His breathing was calm. Controlled.
As if the violence moments ago had never touched him.
A few steps away, Theer hesitated before approaching.
He didn’t know who this man was.
But one thing was certain—
This man was far more dangerous than he looked.
Theer broke the silence.
“Uh… earlier,” he said carefully,
“I saw how you dealt with those robbers.”
Ray turned his head slightly.
“Where did you learn to fight like that?” Theer asked.
“Are you… military?”
A faint smile touched Ray’s lips.
Gentle. Almost reassuring.
Yet something behind his eyes felt distant—unreachable.
If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
“No,” Ray replied.
“I just… used to work in a place that taught skills like that.”
Theer frowned.
“Where?”
Ray paused.
Just long enough to feel deliberate.
Then he answered, his voice soft but convincing.
“I used to work for Teva Tech.”
The word struck Theer like a blade to the chest.
Teva Tech.
His father’s company.
The company that built the future.
The company seized by force.
The company tied to the mineral that changed the world.
“…Teva Tech?” Theer repeated.
“Really?”
Ray nodded.
But something in his gaze hardened—just slightly.
“Yes. I was part of your father’s development team.”
Theer’s eyes widened.
“You knew my father?”
Ray’s smile faded into something quieter. Heavier.
“I respected him deeply,” Ray said.
“He was a good man.”
There was no hesitation in his voice.
“The world doesn’t realize how many lives your father saved.”
Theer stood still.
Those words cut deeper than he expected.
Then Ray continued, his tone shifting—subtly, but unmistakably.
“But Teva Tech isn’t what it used to be.”
He looked away.
“It changed… because of the new leadership.”
Theer already knew the answer, but asked anyway.
“…Marcus?”
Ray met his eyes directly.
“Yes.”
Then, with controlled intensity—
“I hate the way he operates.”
The words carried weight.
Real anger. Real bitterness.
Enough to make Theer believe him completely.
What Theer didn’t know—
was that every word was part of a script Marcus himself had approved.
Walking Away from the Lights
The sirens faded as they moved farther from the scene.
Theer leaned against a concrete barrier, exhaling slowly.
This was the first time he had met someone who truly knew his father.
Someone who opposed Marcus.
“Why did you leave Teva Tech?” Theer asked quietly.
Ray looked up at the night sky.
The reflected lights painted his face in shifting colors, making him appear both warm and distant.
“Because I saw what Marcus was doing,” Ray said.
“And I knew it was wrong.”
He turned back to Theer.
“I want to protect people,” Ray continued.
“Not rule them through fear.”
Theer clenched his fist.
Those words—
they matched his own thoughts perfectly.
Silence stretched between them.
Then Theer spoke again.
“…Would you help me?”
Ray smiled.
Soft. Calm.
But deep within his eyes was a trace of cold calculation—
something no ordinary person would ever notice.
“If you’re looking for someone who refuses to let Marcus control the world—”
He extended his hand.
“Then I’m on your side.”
Theer took it without hesitation.
A firm handshake.
Trust formed in a single moment.
Unaware that the man standing before him—
Was the one Marcus had placed closest to him.
?
Fade Out.
