Chapter 7: The gamble paid off?

Vazpin walked into the crowd, squeezing his way to the front drawing everyone's attention then said.

"The land is restored, the dragon has left. Is there a need to go and antagonise it. There's a chance of failure and if that happens it will bring an even greater disaster than before. So tell me why go through the risk. I say we stay"

"Vazpin have you no shame, turning your back on our savior"

"I am simply stating what I believe to be a rational conclusion, what reason do we have to go after it when it no longer has plans to interfere with our world".

Vazpin wasn't the only one who thought as such there were others waiting to surface when they saw the momentum was strong.

"Everyone quiet down, you're all a little excited now. Go take a break we'll reconvene at a later time, formerly".

Vazpin the loyal servant that he was didn't cause any further complications and left with the others upon hearing the king's words.

"Forgive them, it has been a long time since the world has had such hope. After the initial defeat, most are afraid of losing this hope"

Said the king when almost everyone had left with only a handful remaining. Hiro did have any particular feelings on the matter only nodding as they went back inside.

"Isn't it foolish, whether sir Hiro goes alone or not it won't change anything. When slaying it fails it will descend on our world"

Said Oldomus when they were back at the study room.

"Understand Oldomus, before though they were doubtful of his strength choosing to fight the dragon there would be nothing to lose."

"By that same logic there is something to gain now if the dragon returns so what's stopping it from doing so. Now more than before we should truly be thinking of subjugating the dragon. Sir Hiro's strength has been proven, his goal isn't a hopeless one. Not to mention defending our interests, a restored world. I for one would not mind putting my hopes on him".

Oldomus spoke showing that he wasn't driven solely by emotion.

"Sir Hiro it seems helping you is an already forgone conclusion, at least for those gathered here. Which brings me to my question. Was its immortality the only challenge?"

Asked the king bringing them back to their earlier topic.

"No, there's one more. It can make and control hundreds of bodies, no matter how many are destroyed it remains largely unaffected at best. The last time it hadn't fully accustomed to its multiple bodies but I cannot say it'll be the same when go against once more."

Hiro answered without concealing anything considering he didn't know how much they knew about it.

"I forgot to ask this earlier but is the core really no longer its weakness?"

"Core? I didn't see anything like that, describe to me."

"Well it's not like we saw it ourselves but according to records it has a red crystalline core protruding from its chest, you wouldn't miss it, which is why I didn't ask earlier."

"There was definitely nothing like that on any one of its bodies. Maybe it's still a weakness and why it is hidden. If so it should be somewhere on the moon it's only a matter of finding it". (Plus with multiple bodies it could be all those I saw were just clones)

Though he did not show it, inwardly Hiro was smiling, feeling much closer to his goal than a moments ago. His gamble had paid off, the information of its weakness he had hoped for was now his to exploit.

"Father, would it be alright if I also went?"

"No, you are prince heir, it's no place for you and this is no place to ask that"

The king rebuked causing Aleus to shrink back into his seat.

"Might I suggest, recruiting Jura, as a warrior he will undoubtedly side with you on this. Following the wisdom of the strong is their way of life, you've proven yourself he won't object"

Said Oldomus moving the conversation along.

"On the subject of recruiting. My master, she's the best finder I know. Though she is away at the moment in search of ancient runes to save our world."

Added Aleus, his mood restored from the thought of his master, confident she would assist him in persuading his father.

(If I'm right she'll be returning within the week for her scheduled reports even when ignoring the world's change)

Their discussion went on, them continuing to tell Hiro everything they knew about the fragment, its strength and weaknesses and from that Hiro could tell how much it had changed since they last confronted it. He was even confident most of what they told him no longer applied to its current self. When they were done they gave him a guest room where he stayed until late when he was invited to the feast. There for the first time in quite a while for both Hiro and them they got to eat food, for Hiro it had been at least a day since he last ate while for them years. But instead of crowding the kitchen, the guests stuck to Hiro like bees on sweet honey. Even when discouraged there were still those who relentlessly followed him the entire time, to say the least it was tiring. Hiro who was worn out from trying to shake them off and went outside for some fresh air, escaping the frenzy.

(These people are exhausting. It's like a feast thrown by mages as much as they say it's for you it's for them to probee and study you)

He sighed remembering how some rune practitioners kept borrowing his sword even when he refused, insisting on what it means to ask such a thing of a swordsman.

  (They really are like mages)

He thought looking at his sword, when he first arrived he was troubled with how he would respond when they asked to disarm him but they didn't. It was all because of a simple truth, a mage's power doesn't come from the weapons they have but the spells they possess, except in this case runes. An additional reason, masters had distinguished backgrounds.

As he stood on the palace balcony he saw a wondrous sight, below he could see a sort of starry scenery, from all the lights spread out throughout the capital. The palace was on higher ground making such a view posible coupled with the buildings being of relative size. While looking up the sky was clear of any clouds and he saw more than just unfamiliar stars lighting up the dark sky.

"Two moons I didn't know there was such a thing".

"Keep saying things like that you'll get along with the old ones".

Said Aleus as he walked onto the balcony, accompanied by his sister.

"You two haven't met I presume, Hiro, this is my sister Arisu, Arisu, this is Hiro, supposedly a prince".

"Are you really royalty, you don't seem used to this kind of activity"

She said while examining Hiro like a bird of prey. With a smile Hiro responded.

"It's prince from a ruined nation, so gatherings weren't much of an option not even as a necessity"

"All right sister you've met him, you can be on your way now".

Said Aleus, already pushing Arisu back into the hall, and when she was at the entrance she looked back resisting his push.

"I heard you'll be going after the dragon, count me in. I've always wanted to be a dragon slayer."

She said before going back in, Aleus sighed returning to Hiro.

"Don't mind her, she doesn't know what she's talking about".

"If she's also a master how can you see yourself go while she can't. From where I stand you two are in the same boat"

"No, I'm a man, she's a woman, it's not the same. I have something to prove, she doesn't"

(Is that how things are here. At least they get along unlike common royal families from my world, siblings and cousins scheming against one another in order to claim the throne. Sigh)

"You wouldn't get along with women where I come from. Anyway what did you mean by getting along with the old ones".

"Oh that, it's just that before the dragon there used to be one moon. The second emerged after the dragon came to our world, growing little by little from tiny dot to being bigger than our original moon, as you can see they aren't the same size. Don't tell me you didn't know this too"

"No, I did not. Why make a moon though"

"That's a question that has plagued masters for decades and no one has come close to the answer".

"I know why. And it's the information you deemed useless but now's as a good a time as any for you to hear it. It's simply really, as a fragmented existence it's been trying to complete it's existence, recreating the object it is a fragment of. Unfortunately for this world it has complete its existence"

(Wait what do you mean, didn't you say how it was just about it being able to grow stronger now)

  He said remembering their conversation.

"What do you think the world is, just this earth we stand on or does it include the moon, sun and stars"

  (All them obviously why)

"You still don't get it, fragments at their core are remnants of a world. It may have been a fragment of a planet or moon, but completing that doesn't mean they are complete when describing what's a world from an unbiased view."

(Are you saying it has the potential to become the world in its entirety)

"Yes, you may have saved them for now but if nothing changes things will get a lot worse. Now that its existence is complete it can devour the next object to increase its description of world and if I'm not wrong that would be the sun."

"Prince Aleus what do you think will happen if the sun was gone."

"We would be plunged into perpetual night and most life would end"

"Feel free to dismiss what I'm about to say. The dragon intends to devour the sun, I should mention it's also likely there'll simply be two suns".

"If it can make a moon given time I don't see why a second sun would be impossible. As for the consequences two suns or no sun, with the already established balance either one spells doom to our world. If this is the case why not tell my father, with this knowledge a force could be quickly dispatched no one would oppose. But how do you know this?"

"The spirit haunting me said so. And telling others to increase the strike force is useless, there's only one dragon. Even if it can control over a thousand bodies it still boils down to destroying the core and having the rest stall while I do that. I suggest only taking the elite and willing."

"When you put it that way I can't argue against it, and without a reliable source there's not much that can be done. How long would it take to devour the sun. Considering it took about a hundred years to make the moon, a thousand years give or take".

Hiro looked to B1 for the answer.

"A ten years, completing its existence isn't the same as devouring to grow its world"

"The spirit says it's less than half of that"

"Don't call me spirit, I'm nothing like that"

Aleus put his hand on Hiro's shoulder tilted his head and said.

"Hiro, bro I didn't want to spoil your fun but I have runes of mystic perception, if there was a spirit here I would have seen it"

"Prince Aleus how do you know this spirit can't be seen using those runes".

"We're about the same age you can speak casually with me"

With a face of genuine surprise Hiro responded.

"Oh, is that so. With how everyone around here has white hair it's kinda hard to tell old from young"

"Surely you jest, it isn't that hard, is it?".

"Relax, I wasn't serious. While we're here mind explaining what runes are"
