Chapter 6: The Abyss Beneath the Village
Kai moved with increasing fluidity, leaping from one floating island to another. He scanned the horizon for John but found nothing until a voice suddenly barked from right behind his ear.
"BOO!"
Kai nearly jumped out of his skin, spinning around to find John grinning like an idiot. Kai wanted to snap at him, but he caught himself and just let out a dry laugh.
"Sorry if I scared you, Kai," John said, his voice turning serious. "I just wanted to see if you always keep your guard up. Anyway, I’ve heard this mission is a true nightmare. It’s not just about raw power this time; there's something else at play."
Kai nodded, his mind racing. If it's not about power, what kind of mission is this? It seems John has more intel than I do... or maybe I’m just overthinking it.
John opened a portal and stepped through. Just before it closed, Kai followed, glancing around as they emerged. They were in a deserted village—broken, hollowed-out houses lined the streets. There wasn't a soul in sight, not even the sound of a stray animal. It was a silence so absolute it felt unnatural.
John made a move to lead the way, but Kai held out a hand, stopping him. "John, I want every detail you have. I’ve got a bad feeling about this."
John turned, a look of concern crossing his face. "My bad. I thought your Master told you, but it seems he didn't have the exact details either. This mission is critical. Deep beneath this village, monsters are gathering under the command of an Intelligent One."
John paused, his gaze darkening. "If we don't stop him and he attacks the surrounding human settlements, the world will find out about the monsters. Our mission is to eliminate the Intelligent One. If he dies, the smaller ones will scatter or we’ll hunt them down personally."
Kai nodded slowly. This is madness, he thought. If that monster slips past us, the world is one step closer to discovering the Void. This can't happen.
They began to investigate until they found a jagged fissure in the earth. Kai reached for his Jonk, but John grabbed his shoulder, whispering, "Your Jonk is too dense, Kai. You haven't learned to hide it yet. If you flare it to the max, they’ll sniff us out in a second. Listen to me—not just as a partner, but as a friend. Use only 5%."
Kai didn't argue. He placed his full trust in John and stabilized his output at 5%. John activated his own Jonk to its peak, and together they descended into the crack. Kai felt a surge of disgust as worms and cold dirt brushed against his face, but he pressed on. Suddenly, the ground gave way.
Kai plummeted, hitting a hard floor a few seconds later, followed immediately by John landing right on top of him. Kai opened his mouth to shout, but John clamped a hand over his face, signaling for absolute silence.
They moved like ghosts through the long, damp corridors until they reached a massive opening. Crouching low to stay hidden, they saw a sight that made their blood run cold. Hundreds of abstract, two-dimensional monsters—errors in reality itself—were gathered there. Large and small, they were all bowed low before a single figure.
That monster didn't emit a massive wave of energy. Instead, it radiated something far rarer: Controlled Jonk.
"John," Kai whispered. "For the first time in my life, I have no plan. Do we charge? Do we sneak in?"
John went silent for a few seconds, calculating. "The only way is a direct strike while their guard is down. The common monsters are bowed; the Smart One is exposed. We go now."
The moment the words left John's mouth, Kai launched a 10% Dash. He blurred through the air, aiming for the creature's head, but a hand of pure darkness emerged from the shadows behind the monster. It caught Kai’s blade mid-air. The monster slowly turned, its glowing yellow eyes piercing the gloom of the cave.
Just as the creature prepared to counter-attack, John jumped in, his blade severing the monster's shadowy hand and freeing Kai.
"No more holding back, Kai!" John yelled. "Give it everything you've got!"
Kai shot him a look of gratitude and let his Jonk explode to his current limit: 15%. He felt the strain immediately—the pressure of the energy began to take its toll on his muscles, but he ignored it.
He locked eyes with the Intelligent One, while John turned to face the hundreds of lesser monsters that were now rising to their feet.
"Kai! Focus on your fight!" John roared over the hissing of the swarm. "I’ll make sure none of them lay a finger on you!"
Kai allowed a small smile to touch his lips before turning back to his target. His sword flared with orange light. He lunged at top speed, performing a mid-air feint. He twisted his blade, carving a deep gash across the monster's chest, but the move left him open. The creature responded instantly, molding a piece of its own dark body into a spear and hurling it into Kai’s torso.
The impact sent Kai reeling back. How am I going to beat this guy?
On the other side of the cavern, John was drowning in monsters. They weren't individually strong, but their numbers were overwhelming. John fought with surgical precision, his technique flawless, but for every one he decapitated, three more emerged from the ink-like shadows.
Dammit, John thought, his breath hitching. I’m already starting to tire... but I can’t fall. Not yet! Kai is counting on me!
Back at the main duel, Kai ripped the black spear from his chest. Before he could even breathe, the monster was upon him, delivering a crushing blow to his head. Kai spun through the air, righted himself, and managed to slice the monster's head halfway through. It wasn't enough. The creature regenerated almost instantly.
The monster spoke, its voice making both John and the other creatures freeze. "You are impeccable humans. One is unpredictable; the other uses refined technique to compensate for having already reached his full potential." It grinned so wide its face seemed to tear. "I can't wait to devour your Jonk!"
The monster launched at Kai, who barely managed to block. He could hear his sword groaning, the steel beginning to crack under the pressure. The Intelligent One didn't give him a second to breathe, raining down claws and strikes to keep Kai from forming a plan.
Meanwhile, John was struggling. His movements, once fluid, were becoming heavy. He was being clipped by the common monsters now; it was taking two strikes instead of one to finish them. He was exhausted.

This Intelligent One is too much for me alone, Kai realized. I need John at 100%. If I can't overpower him, I’ll make him do the work for me!
The monster lunged again with a massive claw. Kai saw his opening. Instead of blocking or dodging completely, he took the hit head-on, letting the claw slash deep into his chest to lure the monster into a committed strike.
Both boys had the same thought at that exact moment: Kai/John is relying on me! If I falter now, everything he’s done will be for nothing!
John felt a second wind—not because his Jonk had returned, but because he was pushing his soul past its limits.
Kai stopped blocking and waited for the perfect second. The Intelligent One attacked with a claw so fast it tore the air itself. Kai closed his eyes, centered his Jonk, and snapped them open. The world seemed to slow down. He could see the trajectory.
Kai pivoted left at the last millisecond. The massive attack sailed past him and slammed into the remaining swarm of lesser monsters, obliterating dozens of them in a single shockwave.
The Intelligent One grew enraged, losing its calculated calm. It lunged, its claw nearly impaling Kai, but suddenly, the limb was severed. John had leaped in, his blade a blur of silver.
The monster retreated, its arm knitting back together, but Kai and John now stood side-by-side, their breathing synchronized, more ready than they had ever been.
John and Kai, blades in hand, exploded toward the monster in perfect synchronization. Kai’s massive Jonk output was so dense that it acted as a shroud, completely masking John’s presence. To the monster, John had become nearly invisible, a ghost hidden within the orange storm of Kai’s energy.
Kai launched a barrage of feints, his movements a chaotic blur, while John delivered hundreds of micro-cuts that the monster barely even noticed yet. They were a symphony of destruction. Every time Kai forced the creature to defend, John’s precise strikes widened the openings, carving through the monster like a hot knife through wax. Yet, the Intelligent One guarded its head with a desperate, impenetrable focus.
The toll on Kai’s body was becoming visible. The sheer strain of overcharging his Jonk to cover for the weakened John was tearing him apart from the inside. Muscles frayed, bones developed hairline fractures, and his internal organs began to fail under the pressure. Both John and the monster saw it.
"A clever strategy, humans," the monster hissed, its voice grating like stones. "But it is far too simple to defeat me!"
The monster detonated its own massive reservoir of Jonk, matching Kai’s pressure and forcing him back. It focused, its yellow eyes narrowing. Recalling how Kai had enhanced his vision, the monster adapted instantly, funneling energy into its own eyes. Suddenly, it saw John.
The creature attacked with a speed that should have been fatal. A jagged, obsidian-like tentacle whipped toward John, but Kai intervened at the last microsecond, parrying the strike with a desperate, trembling blade.
I’m useless... John thought, his heart sinking. Kai is dying trying to hide me, and I can’t even defend myself. Why? Why am I so weak?
John blocked a flurry of tentacles, realizing with cold clarity that there was only one path to victory left. He turned to Kai, his expression resolved. "Kai, I have a plan... don't worry. Just listen carefully."
As they parried the monster’s relentless assault, John continued, "I’m going to make him drop his guard. Don't look at me when I say the word—just attack. Gather every drop of energy you have left and wait for the signal."
Kai felt a knot of dread in his stomach. What is he planning? Something feels wrong... but I have to trust him. Kai stopped his frantic movements, pulling all his remaining Jonk into his legs and his blade, standing like a coiled spring.
John stopped parrying. He stopped dodging. His blade was a jagged ruin, nearly shattered. With a tragic, final smile, he hurled himself directly at the monster.
"Foolish human!" the monster shrieked. "You’ve left yourself wide open!"
The creature retracted every tentacle and claw, focusing all its lethal mass into a single, devastating swarm of strikes aimed at John’s chest. John’s Jonk flickered and died as the dark limbs pierced through him.
"I didn't fail..." John wheezed, blood coughing from his lips. "This was the plan all along."
John gritted his teeth against the agony, holding the tentacles trapped within his own body. With his last breath, he roared: "NOW!"
Kai’s eyes snapped open. He launched himself with a speed that surpassed everything he had done before, ignoring John’s impaled form to focus solely on the target. The monster was defenseless; its weapons were buried deep in John’s flesh. Before the creature could even blink, Kai passed through its head like a ghost.
The Intelligent One’s head didn't just fall; it disintegrated under the sheer weight of Kai’s 15% output.
Kai collapsed to the ground, his body a wreck of pain. "We did it!" he gasped, his vision blurring. "I don't know how you did it, John, but it worked!"
But when Kai looked for his friend, the victory turned to ash. John lay on the stone floor, pierced and broken, a pool of crimson spreading beneath him. Kai’s body froze in horror.
What do I do?! Kai panicked. If I can get him back, someone can save him! But I can't open portals!
Suddenly, a gargantuan portal opened beneath them. They tumbled through the rift, Kai hitting the ground hard near a jagged boulder. As he struggled to keep his eyes open, he saw a familiar figure standing over them. Kaelen.
Kaelen reached for Kai, but the boy used his last ounce of strength to point toward John. Kaelen moved instantly, applying enough energy to stabilize the older boy before vanishing with him toward the Void’s infirmary.
As Kai saw John being carried toward safety, his world finally went black.
Hours later, Kai woke up in the Void. He scrambled to rise, his instincts screaming for combat, but Kaelen was there to calm him.
"Master..." Kai’s voice was a whisper. "Is John... dead?"
Kaelen looked at him solemnly. "We don't know yet, Kai. Leader Mara is the only one skilled enough to save him. She has been working to stabilize him for hours. It all depends on his will now."
Kai looked down, and for the first time in years, hot tears fell onto the cold stone beneath him. Just when he thought things were going right, the world had shattered. Kaelen didn't stop him. When the tears finally slowed, Kaelen pulled the boy into a brief, firm embrace.
"Don't be afraid, Kai. Calm yourself. We need to talk. That mission... it wasn't meant for you. It was ranked far above your level and could have exposed our entire secret. It isn't your fault, and it isn't John’s."
Kaelen’s gaze turned distant. "John is a true man. He sacrificed himself to ensure victory, saving potentially thousands of lives. Remember what we said about being strong? John is exactly what I respect. Whether he lives or dies, his name is the first I will think of when I hear the word 'Strong'."
In a realm beyond consciousness...
John stood in a void of pure white. Is this heaven? he wondered. Did I die? He looked at his hands, then at his chest. No, I can't be dead yet. I can feel my body trying to knit itself back together. This is just my inner consciousness.
He felt a wave of doubt. Do I even want to go back? I was born in the Void. I trained since I was a child. I unlocked 100% of my Jonk and refined my technique... and I’m still weak. Kai has been here for weeks and he’s already surpassing me.
Suddenly, a figure of pure, radiant blue appeared in the white space. John reached for a sword that wasn't there. The blue figure sat beside him.
"John, you are a truly hardworking soul," the figure said softly. "But if you give up now, you will leave before unlocking your true potential. Remember this: you can survive. You can obtain the one thing you lack. Kaijiu."
"What Kaijiu?!" John snapped, his frustration boiling over. "I’ve met every condition! I’m at 100% output, I’ve been on the brink of death... I’m starting to think it's just a myth!"
"You are right to be angry," the blue figure replied. "But you forgot one thing: the moment is different for everyone. This simply wasn't your time yet. But that time exists. And besides... Kai is waiting for you."
John froze at the mention of Kai. If I give up now, who will keep Kai on the right path? I’m supposed to be his senior... what kind of example would I be if I stayed here?
The blue figure touched John’s chest. Darkness rushed back into his vision. Agony exploded through his nerves. John screamed and bolted upright in the infirmary bed. He was gasping for air, his body covered in sweat. A massive, jagged scar now ran from his left arm across his entire torso.
John tried to swing his legs out of bed, desperate to find Kai, but a single finger pressed against his chest, pinning him down with impossible authority. Leader Mara stood over him.
"John," Mara said, her voice commanding. "Kaelen himself begged me to heal you, claiming I was the only one capable. If you get out of this bed now, you waste every second of my work. Do not think saving you was easy."
John stammered an apology, but Mara cut him off. "Kaelen told me to tell you this: his student, Kai, will be training and resting. You must do the same. When you both return to full strength and surpass your limits, Kai will be waiting to see the man you've become—spiritually and in battle."
