Chapter 1.5 - A short break

  For Official Purposes Only

  Document: "Field Report --- ████████████, Floor █, Way-station █"

  ISS: 2021-02-22 █████

  Summary:

  - Arrivals: ███

  - Departures (████████): 117

  - Departures (███████): 5

  - Income: ████████████████████

  - Expenditures: ██████████████

We have begun receiving arrivals from the ██████ floors. Based on numbers reported by the ███ floor, we can calculate an attrition rate of ███. This is in line with previous numbers from the first wave. Worryingly, approximately ████ (███) of them were selected to continue to the ███ floor. A single █████ has advanced as of now, leaving most of them here to rest and recuperate.

We have cataloged the existence of a few more classes including the ██████, [artificer]], and other support roles. Those that managed to activate the ████ portal should be a great asset even in non-combat roles. One of the ██████████ teamed up with our █████████ to create an ██████████████. █████████████████████████████████████████████████████ in exchange for the ███████ coinage. This should allow ████████████████████████████████████████████.

This further reinforces the use of the ███████ coinage as currency. Some people have set up temporary shops trading in coins. Some of the new support classes can burn them to power their abilities.

In accordance to these issues, we have started to aggressively stockpile these materials to further support our operations. The █████████████ has not shown any sign of the reported signs of ███████████████. We have reduced the frequency of its use anyway out of an abundance of caution.

P.S. The news of my brother is disheartening. I'll have to hope he can make it out at one of the █████████████.

Some 20 yards down the corridor, Eric was knelt in front of a young girl, approximately 16 years old. Standing watch was the girl's companion, a boy of approximately the same age. The boy wasn't much for talking, but they had managed to fight off a rotten zombie-like creature together.

The boy had dug his fingers into its eyes, allowing Eric to catch it off guard, sending it to the floor. The confusion and blindness gave them enough time to run off to rescue the girl and get her to relative safety to perform some first aid.

Eric was currently washing the girl's wounds. She had been viciously clawed by the monster, and had fainted --- likely from the pain. Her pallid face was almost a purple color. Her heart was still beating, and she was still breathing. That was the most important thing for now.

A particularly loud banging sound drew Eric's attention back down the hallway. Back probably 15 yards in the direction they had faced the undead. Ridiculously, it was still alive and for whatever reason had decided that its best course of action was to blindly pick a direction and charge full speed at it for the last 10 minutes at least.

That must have been its normal hunting behavior --- while it could still see. Now that it had been robbed of its sight, the creature was falling back on instinct and it wasn't going well for it.

Its arms were mangled, it's right arm was dangling loosely by a flap of skin attached to its shoulder. The left was hanging limply by the elbow in a similar manner, and it's face --- already disgusting when he first saw it--- was heavily distorted, barely hanging on to a very fractured skull. If things kept going like this, it would probably end up destroying itself before long.

Eric thought he recognized the monster from the documents he had been given to read. He pulled out his binder of information and started scanning for it in the lists of monsters. According to the manual, it was a 'resurrected'. A particularly rare undead creature that appeared after the third floor.

What was it doing on the first one? Or did it always spawn on the first floor, but no one had managed to survive one on the first few floors. That seemed unlikely, he and the boy had managed to get it into its current state by themselves. So there was something else at play. He kept reading.

  *** Stat Block ***

Eric kept reading. It had a vicious charge attack - check. Covered in rotting goo --- double check. Bony claws instead of fingers --- triple check. Poisonous blood that makes you pass out and then stop breathing --- oh no. Wait, 30 minutes? How long had they been fighting that thing before Eric showed up?

Eric had no idea what a [censored] was, so their only option was to make sure that monster died quickly. Although its body looked like it had taken a beating, there was no way of knowing how close that thing was to dying. If it still had the longevity of a floor 3 monster despite being on the first floor, they would have no chance of killing it off before she stopped breathing.

The monster showed no signs of stopping. Every time it collided with a wall, it would fall to the floor, lunge its way back to its feet, and --- whatever direction it had ended up in --- it would charge. Usually crashing into another wall almost right away.

It had, however, been creeping towards them slowly. They had initially moved a full twenty yards away from the monster to attempt first aid, but it was now only about 10 yards away.
