Chapter 3 – Rift of the Ascendants

The morning sun struggled to pierce the thick violet clouds hovering over the floating archipelago. The central isle was scarred from the previous battles—jagged platforms shattered, drifting debris hanging mid-air like frozen lightning. A faint hum of residual Aether energy pulsed beneath their feet, reverberating against Kael’s chest.

“Every time I think it’s over…” Miro muttered, flipping lightly across a drifting shard. “It just… isn’t.”

Branik scanned the horizon, fists glowing faintly. “You get used to it. But don’t let familiarity dull your focus. Every wave is different.”

Kael crouched, violet aura flaring as he touched the fractured stone. His eyes traced the currents of residual energy, picking up faint disturbances in the Aether. “They’re converging here… someone wants a fight,” he said, voice low. “And I can feel a new power awakening in them. Stronger than the scouts… stronger than anything we’ve faced so far.”

Miro grinned, daggers spinning. “Perfect! I was hoping for a real challenge.”

Branik exhaled slowly. “Just make sure you’re alive to enjoy it. That’s the only challenge that matters.”

The islands swayed violently under gusts of wind, shards spinning and tilting unpredictably. Every movement required calculation. Even a single misstep could send them tumbling into the abyss

A sudden pulse of Aether exploded from the clouds above. Shadow Lotus scouts emerged in coordinated waves, faster and more numerous than before. But this time, among them, a figure cloaked in black energy descended—the first Ascendant they had encountered directly.

Kael leapt into action, violet aura flaring violently. He absorbed a volley of blasts mid-air, redirecting them toward the scouts and using the momentum to close the distance to the Ascendant.

Miro spun through the chaos, cutting through scouts while avoiding debris. “Keep up, Kael! You can’t hog all the fun!”

Branik’s fists slammed into a crumbling platform, sending shockwaves that toppled approaching enemies and stabilized the ground beneath Kael. “We’re not playing a game, Miro! Focus on survival!”

The Ascendant raised a hand, and the air itself twisted violently. Platforms trembled, floating shards spun faster, and the wind surged with unnatural force. Energy streaked through the currents, warping trajectories and forcing constant adaptation.

This isn’t just combat… it’s chaos incarnate, Kael thought. Every move, every dodge, every strike… has to be perfect.

  ?

Suddenly, the ground beneath them cracked violently, a rift forming in the central platform. Blue-white Aether energy spewed upward, forming jagged arcs of light that twisted unpredictably.

Kael leapt across the widening gap, violet aura flaring as energy blasts ricocheted off floating shards. Miro somersaulted through spinning debris, daggers slicing illusions while real enemies struck from unexpected angles.

Branik barreled through constructs, smashing debris while creating stable paths for his teammates. “Stay together! Don’t let them separate us!”

The rift pulsed with raw power, warping the surrounding Aether currents. Kael’s internal focus sharpened. They’re manipulating the battlefield itself… controlling the energy flows to isolate us. We can’t fight blindly.

  ?

The Ascendant finally revealed itself fully—a towering figure cloaked in black and violet energy, eyes glowing like twin suns. Its aura distorted the space around it, bending light, wind, and even time in subtle pulses.

Kael charged, violet energy surging around his arms. He collided with the Ascendant mid-air, energy erupting in a violent blast that shook the surrounding platforms. Scouts were sent flying in every direction, some hitting drifting shards, others tumbling into the void.

Miro leapt above, striking exposed flanks while Branik smashed debris to create openings. “We fight as one!” Kael shouted, synchronizing attacks with his teammates.

The Ascendant countered, warping reality around its fists, creating clones, illusions, and energy constructs. Every strike was unpredictable, bending space itself. Kael absorbed attacks, predicting patterns and redirecting energy strategically. Miro danced through the chaos, cutting illusions and real enemies alike. Branik smashed constructs and stabilized the collapsing terrain, ensuring their paths didn’t vanish mid-battle.

Timing… instinct… trust, Kael thought. One mistake and we’re gone.

  ?

After what felt like an eternity, the Ascendant withdrew, leaving faint trails of residual energy pulsing through the Aether currents. The remaining scouts scattered, vanishing into the stormed clouds above.

Kael landed on a stable platform, chest heaving. “That… was different,” he muttered, violet aura still flickering. “They’re stronger than I expected. And they were testing us.”

Miro grinned, wiping sweat from his brow. “Finally! That pulse… that energy… I can feel it calling. This is going to be fun.”

Branik exhaled, surveying the battlefield. Platforms were fractured, shards still spinning, and the stormed clouds hummed with latent power. “This isn’t just a test. The inner circle is orchestrating everything. The next challenge… will be worse.”

Kael flexed his hands, violet energy flickering along his skin. “We survived this wave. But the real battle… is still ahead.”

Lightning cracked across the violet sky, illuminating the drifting debris. The faint pulse of Ascendant-level energy echoed in the currents, an ominous promise of what was yet to come. The trio stood together, bruised but unbroken, ready for the trials Shadow Lotus had prepared.
