Chapter 10: Practice Makes Perfect

That night in our room the lights out was early, apparently Alice needed to wake up early for her new school, which I don't understand. I mean today is Sunday so tomorrow is a school day, but why new? As far as I know, Hogwarts is a boarding school besides, it shouldn't take in new students until around early September, like most schools.

When I asked Alice about her day, she wasn't as guarded about it as I thought she would be, she twisted her activities around to fit mundane standards but I recognized the events for what they were.

She bought a wand, I'm guessing from Olivander's, she also bought several robes, some school supplies, and books, I couldn't find which event correlated to the buying of her cauldron, so maybe she omitted that.

Anyway, I had never thought how intelligent Alice could be, I thought she would spill the beans as soon as she got someone to talk about this in length, but she actually had a convincing lie mixed with truth ready, which makes me reconsider her inability to lie.

With plethora of thoughts and foreign emotions swirling around in my head, I closed my eyes and drifted to sleep.

Later that week, things weren't that different for Alice, at least from my perspective, she woke up early every day to go to school where she'd be for the majority of the rest of the day, she'd come back in the evening and complain how boring school was, like she had been doing for weeks. If there was a difference it would be, how excited she was for school, for the first two days, though that died out fast, I'm guessing wherever it is she is going they're not teaching magic the way she thought.

For me though, things have changed, after that day, I have been practicing magic discreetly, only small things, like levitating coin, controlling dust, making air currents, things that even if someone saw me, they wouldn't notice anything of importance.

I hadn't felt many different types of charms being cast that day, rather just based on feeling alone, I could tell there was about three small charms cast, a levitation charm, and two other ones that I couldn't get a good feel of, since they were over in a blink.

The major one though, the one she had cast the most and longest, was a sort of transformation magic which I'm guessing was the transfiguration charm. That was also a major part of my focus today.

Sitting at the desk in my room I was looking at the needle that used to be a match stick, using my sixth sense to look at it, I could see that the needle now had a small gravity to it as well, much like myself, the 'texture(?)' however was different, even after a couple of days I'm still not entirely used to this new sense, so I can't tell how exactly the effect of the needle on the Mana-field is different from a wizard, aside from it's intensity, but I can tell for sure that there a difference.

By the way, the first time ever I did magic, I had changed the color of my hat, turns out that is also a form of transfiguration, now that I could observe the magic itself, I could spot the similarities, on the other hand, the telekinesis I had used to move the hat, nearly a week ago, is vastly different from the levitation charm that Hermione had demonstrated, I still couldn't tell what exactly was happening different aside from levitation not being able to move objects in the X or Y axis but I could also feel that the fundamental way the charm achieved it's results was different.

I was reminded of a superhero story of two speedsters, they both had super speed however one of them achieved it by pure physical and mental speed, while the other could manipulate time in a thin aura around himself and make his own time move faster relative to the rest of the world, now granted the manipulation of time isn't so strait forward in the real world but in comic logic they had arrived at the same results using different methods.

This situation was somewhat the same minus the time manipulation, I took two identical coins from the desk, held each in one hand and levitated both at the same time. In my right hand was the coin that I had used the levitation charm on, while in my left hand I had used the telekinesis spell, I had accidentally created when I blasted away my hat in frustration a couple days ago.

In hindsight the difference between the two was immediately noticable, regardless of the difference in the fundamental way they achieved their results, first was also the reason why I called the telekinesis a spell rather than a charm, the coin in my right hand was exerting minute influence on the Mana-field much like the match turned needle on my desk, while the other coin was not.

The other immediate difference was concentration, for the charm I had casted it and now the coin was levitating, and I didn't need to do anything else besides supplying the mana for it to remain effective, for telekinesis however, I have to actively concentrate on keeping the coin afloat but in return the ratio of mana used for the duration was much better.

After letting out a breath to relax myself, I took the needle and two coins and went for the door, Alice will be home soon, and as much as I want to listen to her talk about her day, in hopes of learning something useful, I have more important things to do, like hiding in the attic.

The reason for hiding there aside from it being a place I can keep practicing without the risk of Alice walking in on me, is that I've been trying to disappear for hours a day for the sake of preparation.

In another couple days or weeks depending on how long it would take to master the charms and spells I need, I'm going to sneak out of the house, and when I do I'm going to be gone for several hours, I'm hoping that by getting everyone used to my disappearing, they won't react as badly, this will be my third time, and their, specially Liz and Mrs. Gray's reactions were already ways milder the second time though they were still rightfully worried.

Just as I was about to open the door, I sensed something that I hadn't paid attention to previously, and before I could decide what to do, the door opened. Behind the door stood Alice with a grin. "Hah, this time, I got you."

"Aren't you home early?" I asked. She has somehow gotten it to her head that we're playing hide and seek and she's taken in upon herself to find me every day when she gets home, I wonder where she gets all that energy from.

"School ended early today." She said throwing her backpack on her bed. "Anyways, listen to this-" I guess I'll have to listen to her talk today, no more practice until dinner. I sighed listening to her somehow constantly talk about a magic school without making the magic part obvious.
