Kain strikes again

The cave’s darkness pressed against them like a living thing. Every step Kael, Lorian, and Rachelle took echoed faintly, bouncing off jagged walls of black stone. The faint, unnatural pulse of necromantic energy ahead was almost tactile—an oppressive rhythm that made the hairs on Kael’s arms rise.

Kael’s eyes glimmered faintly with the serpents’ energy, sensing the unseen presence. Beside him, Lorian and Rachelle moved with confidence, eyes scanning for the slightest motion in the gloom.

As they advanced, a chill swept through the cavern, carrying the unmistakable stench of decay. Shadows coalesced along the walls. Something stirred. Something… unnatural.

Kael narrowed his eyes. They’ve noticed us.

And then, almost instantaneously, the skeletons rose. Dozens of them, fractured bones cobbled together with crude magical bindings, emerged from cracks in the floor and walls. Their empty eye sockets glowed faintly with green necromantic energy. They wielded broken swords, rusty axes, and shields made of jagged bone.

Rachelle stopped, voice low but firm. “Kain… just watch and learn. Lorian and I will take the lead. Observe the patterns, anticipate the weaknesses.”

Kael inclined his head slightly. Patterns, weaknesses… The serpents hummed with anticipation. Even in restraint, his power coiled inside him.

Lorian stepped forward, tossing a small dagger infused with fire in a precise arc. It struck a skeleton in the shoulder, igniting the bones in flames that crackled and hissed. Rechelle followed, spinning a short spear in her hands, striking another skeleton’s skull. Bone shattered under her precise strikes, fragments scattering across the rocky floor.

Kael watched as they worked together—Lorian drawing skeletons toward him with rapid, agile maneuvers, Rachelle cutting down approaching threats with disciplined strikes. They were effective, but cautious. Every time a skeleton lunged, the two moved with fluid synergy, anticipating each other’s position, coordinating attacks silently.

Kael allowed himself a small nod. Impressive…

Minutes passed in a blur of bone and steel. Skeletons fell one after another, bones shattering under the force of precise, controlled attacks. The boy and girl moved like a single unit, gradually clearing the immediate area.

But then—a shift in the air. The light flicker of necromantic energy condensed into a heavier, darker presence. Kael felt it in the pit of his stomach: something far stronger than the skeletons.

From a deep, shadowed corridor emerged a towering figure.

  The Durahan.

Its armor, jagged and blackened, reflected none of the dim light. Its helmet was featureless except for a dark slit where eyes might be. A massive sword, almost twice the size of Kael’s spear, swung easily in one gauntleted hand. The ground vibrated as it advanced.

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

The skeletons that remained froze in place, almost as if this creature was commanding them. The air itself seemed heavier, saturated with malevolent energy.

Rachelle instinctively moved forward, raising her spear, but the Durahan’s first swing came faster than the eye could follow. It slashed across her back, a deep gash opening along her shoulder. Pain flared, and she stumbled, her amber eyes widening.

Lorian reacted instantly, tossing a small potion toward her mid-step. Rachelle caught it, drinking quickly. The wound hissed and closed under the potion’s alchemical magic, leaving her standing again, breathing heavily but alive.

Kael’s expression sharpened. It’s my turn.

The Durahan’s dark form advanced, swinging its massive sword in wide arcs. Kael adjusted his stance, the serpents coiling inside him like living weapons. He called forth the thunder spear, electricity crackling along its shaft. The air around him shimmered as he surged forward.

The first clash of weapon against weapon resonated through the cavern. Sparks flew as Kael’s lightning-imbued spear met the Durahan’s colossal blade. The impact sent a shockwave through the surrounding stone.

The Durahan swung again, faster this time, trying to overwhelm Kael with sheer force. Kael leapt backward, letting the serpents inside him propel his movements. He struck again, his spear a blur of blue-white lightning. Bone and metal clashed against energy.

The fight intensified. Each blow Kael parried or delivered was precise, controlled, calculated. He didn’t just attack—he read the movements, anticipating the Durahan’s swings, exploiting tiny gaps in the armor.

Ten blows passed in rapid succession. Ten strikes, each answered with a counter from the Durahan. Sparks and small fragments of stone rained down. Kael’s arms ached with exertion, but his focus remained unbroken.

Finally, he found the opening. The Durahan overextended on a wide swing, leaving the right side of its armored body exposed for a fraction of a second. Kael thrust the thunder spear forward, channeling every ounce of his energy into the strike. Thunder arced , crackling violently, wrapping around the massive weapon like living fire.

The spear drove through the Durahan’s chest, electricity burning through the black armor and flesh beneath. The creature roared, a sound more like grinding metal and bone than a human voice. Sparks and small arcs of lightning danced along its massive form. Then, with a final, echoing crash, it collapsed.

The tunnel fell silent, save for Kael’s own heavy breathing and the faint hum of residual electricity .

Kael exhaled slowly, gripping the shaft tightly. The serpents inside him coiled in quiet approval, thrumming with restrained energy.

He glanced back at Lorian and Rachelle, who had remained vigilant behind him. Both were panting, faces streaked with dirt and sweat, but neither had been seriously harmed.

Kael allowed a faint smirk to cross his face. “Looks like… I’ll be taking the lead now.”

Lorian and Rachelle exchanged quick glances, recognition flickering in their eyes. They had been capable, skilled in their own right, but this was beyond what they had anticipated.

Kael’s gaze swept the darkened corridor ahead. The necromantic pulse of the cave was stronger in the distance, signaling the presence of the Dark Priest still hidden somewhere further inside. Kael adjusted his grip on the spear, readying himself.

The skeletal remnants of the Durahan and the smaller skeletons lay scattered across the cavern floor, shattered or burnt by the previous attacks. The faint green glow of necromantic energy lingered, like a warning, reminding Kael that this was only the first wave of what awaited deeper within.

Rachelle stepped forward, carefully placing a hand on the ground to examine any residual traps or magical residues. “There’s more ahead,” she whispered. “We should proceed carefully. The priest’s influence extends deeper.”

Kael nodded, eyes scanning the shadows. The serpents inside him twitched, sensing the faint pulse of necromantic energy ahead. The cave was alive, waiting.

He turned fully to his companions. “Stay close, observe, and follow my lead. We move as one, but I’ll handle immediate threats. Understand?”

Both Lorian and Rachelle inclined their heads, trust evident in their expressions despite the recent intensity of the battle.

Kael exhaled and adjusted his stance, the thunder spear humming faintly with residual energy. Every step forward would bring them closer to the Dark Priest. Every shadow could conceal death.

And yet, he felt no fear—only anticipation.

Let them come, he thought. I’ve already faced far worse than skeletons and a single Durahan. This priest… this necromancer… will be no different.

The cave ahead was dark, oppressive, and pulsing with latent magic. Kael’s senses sharpened, every nerve attuned to the faintest vibration of movement. The fight had only begun, and the real challenge waited deeper within.

And with that, the trio stepped further into the darkness, the glow of the Durahan’s fallen form fading behind them, leaving only silence and the distant hum of necromantic energy.
