It was a quiet night for the Walled City.
Maybe a little too quiet.
Lurking in the shadows, a small team of renegades put a plan into action.
Near the West Gate, there lies a power plant that uses a special source simply called Void Power in order to provide power for its surrounding area. Due to its unnatural source of energy, the facility is small and only houses the contraption used to convert such power to power local households and shops. However, it is fairly guarded by various soldiers of the Void Control Coalition, henceforth the VCC, due to the volatile nature of the energy.
A guard checks his watch. 2:34am. He sighs at the thought of staying another half an hour before he can clock out. Well, the job does not require much attention all the time. After all, who would attack a glorified nuclear power plant?
Unfortunately, tonight is the night that fate starts to shift.
THUD. The guard suddenly fell lifelessly, his throat slit from an assailant. His companions also drop dead not long after. The renegades infiltrated the building and opened the door from the inside. As it opened, a tall woman begins her slow walk towards the contraption. She took her time, knowing her allies will take care of any unwanted witnesses.
When she reached the machine, she smirked. The plan is going well. She opened the compartment where raw Void Power is accumulated, and takes out a couple of still-squirming worm-like organisms from a pocket on her ash-grey dress.
This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.
Holding the worms above the Void Power, which is starting to resonate with her presence, she drops them into the compartment before closing it swiftly. "I hope you like the gift, dear brother..."
As she said so, she and her allies dissolved into the shadows once again, fleeing from the imminent scene that's about to happen.
The worms start to vibrate violently. With this much concentration of Void Power, the worms start to mutate. They start growing in size, appendages start appearing from its body, internal organs start to form, and a monster is born.
The building explodes. In the smoke, the figure of the monsters loom. Suddenly, they blew away the smoke and cried a screech that broke the glass of the buildings further from the explosion radius. Alarms start to blare throughout the city. The monsters begin their rampage. Soldiers start to engage the enemy, while civilians began evacuating. The casualty number begins to spike.
In a hospital on the other side of the city, a young man suddenly wakes from his long slumber. He felt something change, as if his body had intentions to move, towards the explosion which he assumed woke him up. He glanced at the window in his room. The opposite side of the city is lit on fire, and 2 monsters are destroying the buildings that stand in their way. When he tried to get up, a sharp jolt of pain caused him to stumble off the bed. He struggled to get up from such a fall, not knowing why he had such trouble balancing himself as he stood up. His body felt numb, his nerves felt new sensations it had never felt, and all of that information started to overload his brain. It has been a while.
When he opened the door to his room, a passing nurse saw him limping, using the wall as support. She remembers him. After all, the nurses of this floor of the hospital were threatened by the leader of the VCC to personally take care of that particular man, but everyone thought that he would never wake up. She quickly supported him as he made his way towards the exit, not after the nurse reporting the situation to her peers.
The young man felt something familiar. As if fate itself has started to shift yet again.
The next chapter should hopefully be soon.
