CHAPTER 14

As I made my way home from the depths of the forest, the fatigue in my body grew heavier with every step, my frail condition rendering the journey all the more arduous. Yet my mind, seeking escape from the suffering, drifted elsewhere. My thoughts were consumed by the creature, and by the mystery of the mist that gathered about the cedar trees. These three elements — the creature, the trees, and the mist — though seemingly independent, felt bound together by an invisible thread. If I could uncover more about one, the others might unravel of their own accord. It resembled a riddle composed of interlocking pieces; once I found the proper key, I was certain the door to the truth would begin to open.

“Siri,” I asked, unable to conceal the excitement rising within me, “when the creature moved towards the depths of the forest, did the mist around the trees change? If so, can you compare the newly recorded mist with the previous data?”

“Accessing memory… Running comparison… Partial matches found. Displaying,” Siri replied, her voice cold yet reassuring in my mind.

At once, images flooded my thoughts. I could see how the mist had shifted at the very moment the creature withdrew into the forest. It was different from before, yet there was a strange cohesion within it. It was as though the trees were responding collectively to the change.

Compared with the earlier formations, there were distinct differences in colour and pattern. Some appeared darker; others trembled faintly, as though quivering with restrained intent. Each discovery only provoked further questions.

“Siri, compare the recorded mists by colour, shape, size, and pattern. In particular, analyse the formations that appeared at the moment the creature received the message from the black bird. Identify the differences.”

“Comparison process initiated. This will require some time. You will be notified upon completion.”

As her voice faded, I found myself adrift in speculation.

Were the trees and the creature in communication? If so, why had the creature not established some visible connection with the trees after receiving the bird’s message? Or perhaps the bond was instinctive — the creature regarding the forest as its dominion, and the trees as part of its natural order.

Perhaps the cedars were under its protection. If the black bird was bold enough to bear it news, then the creature must have been woven into the forest’s hierarchy.

But what message had it truly received? What had so abruptly stirred disgust or anger within it? More crucial still — if the trees were allies of the creature, why had the mist altered when it chose to depart? Were the trees conveying something to it?

Lost in these questions, I was startled by Siri’s voice once more.

“Significant alterations in the mist have been detected. Processed results are now being displayed.”

I focused at once. In the projected imagery, the mist around the trees had grown denser. Each cluster shifted with deliberate rhythm, as though reacting. Was the forest mirroring the creature’s emotions?

“Siri, save these formations as a separate file. Name it ‘The Language of the Cedars’. Transfer all acquired data into that file. Record the mists that formed during the creature’s reaction to the black bird’s message as ‘hatred and disgust’.”

  “As you wish.”

I did not know where these discoveries would lead. Yet one thing was certain: if there truly existed a language among the trees, I had been granted a rare opportunity to learn it.

And yet… perhaps I would come to regret it.

If the trees could speak, there was no guarantee their words were meant for human ears. What if I uncovered a secret that was never meant to be known? What if the knowledge this language offered drew me into dangers far greater than I could foresee?

As my thoughts dissolved into uncertainty, I realised I was nearing home. This forest still had much to teach me.

  But was I ready?

  That was the true question.
