Chapter 147 | Moonlit Flame

02:00 IST, Second Day, Fifth Month, 3080 PV | Polan System / Trial 3 World-structure / Dressing Rooms

You would think that seeing Ray in dresses would impact me less over time. But it is the exact opposite. The more I see the more I wish to see, and with each time she just gets more and more beautiful.

Ray stands before me in a silver dress, cut off on the shoulders. Her platinum blonde hair is arranged into a nice crown that really brings out her regal side. It nicely reflects the light and gives her a bit of an ethereal glow (which is stunning). “So, whaddya think?” She gives a twirl and the dress shifts with a blueish tint in the light.

“Stunning, beautiful, cute, awesome, amazing, fantastic, glorious, regal, powerful, awesome, cute, pretty, delightful, lovel-” In the middle of my vocabulary dump Ray suddenly presses her hand against my mouth. Her face is entirely red and oh so cute. I just want to squish her cheeks right now, they almost demand me to do it. Unfortunately Ray prevents me from doing so at the moment, I shall simply have to do it later.

“Idiot, you don’t have to say that much.” She places her hand on mine and squeezes gently.

“I only got through less than a percent of my list though! You’re so beautiful and awesome, it must all be said, lest you go underappreciated.”

“Actions before words, as they say.” She smiles and leans in for a nice long kiss. I am more than happy to abide by such a saying, it is very beneficial to me after all.

By the way, I am wearing a tuxedo made out of the same silver-blue fabric. It is some metal alloy produced by researchers on City Stelarum. A few centimeters of it is also strong enough to stop a plasma bolt, so it is not just decorative.

I also have a cool pair of cuffs that sparkle when I move. I asked Ray not to include those, but she insisted because, and I quote, ‘I am a dashing prince that sparkles’. Whatever the klack that is supposed to mean, I have no clue. But I think it is a compliment, probably. Though even if she wants to insult me, that is perfectly okay with me.

After much kissing and even a few headpats, we walk out into the gala hall. No surprise, it is split into three sections with a large dance floor in the middle. Ray and I immediately beeline for our section and are swarmed by politicians wanting attention. Times never do change, people always want power in some form or another.

Can’t they see I already have the greatest power in the universe? My girlfriend is super cute, and there is no way I want anything they could provide, her attention is far more valuable. She gets attention before all of them too, it is only fair. Attention goes to the cutest person in the room first, it is simply the law of reality. Especially when that cutest person is really good at headrubs and kisses. Like seriously, her skill is practically transcendent.

We walk right through the crowd as if they aren't there. We stand by the dance floor and wait for a few moments for The Gamekeeper to make their appearance. They are wearing a snazzy green suit today.

The Gamekeeper welcomes everyone to the event. And then, much to my horror – and Ray’s excitement – they call us to the stage to give a speech. I hate speeches. Something about how the attention is all focused on what you are about to say. It's completely fine when they are just watching me do other things. But combine that with thinking about what to say next…

Ray’s hand finds mine and she squeezes tightly. Hmm, maybe speeches aren’t so bad. Plus I can always just kiss Ray if I panic too much, that will surely get a big rise out of the audience. I bet the highlights reels would go absolutely insane with such footage.

It is not every day that such a cute girl and normal guy kiss in front of the most powerful people in the universe. For good reason too, because it would normally be completely absurd. But Ray and I are the Moonlight Duo, and nothing is too absurd for us.

We go up behind the podium and the room goes silent. A couple thousand eyes stare right at the two of us. Before I can panic, Ray squeezes my hand as if sensing it.

This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it

I really do love her, so klacking much.

Ray doesn't miss a beat as she launches into a speech about a bunch of nonsense. Not bad nonsense of course, great nonsense that really wins the crowd over. It doesn't get as much of a reaction as if they were our loyal fans, considering all the attendees are important officials and such. But the applause is still deafening.

To top it off, I lean down and pull Ray into a nice and long kiss. I didn't panic at all, but I still wanted to kiss her. I knew she wouldn’t mind, in fact, the moment I move away she places her hand on the back of my head and drags me right back down. Her lips are nice and sweet, almost like those blueberries we had back in the arena.

Rather than be normal people and walk back onto the dance floor, I wrap my arm around Ray’s side. She leans in closely and I can feel her warmth even through our outfits. Then we jump off the balcony and I slowly glide us down to the ground.

The Gamekeeper takes their place back. “Well.. after that dazzling speech, let's get this thing started, shall we?”

I turn to Ray and we smile as the music starts up. Not that we need music – Ray and I don’t need such silly things.

For the first time in a while, I form a bit of pure inae. I make two katanas, one for each of us. I am a bit slower than I would like, but I bet all the observers are just gawking and confused at what I just did to care about how fast I did it.

We start moving away from each other and then collide in a flash of light – powered by inae of course. The flash of light casts the crowd in a bright purple, regardless of their outfit color.

In the back I can see Luna, scowling at us with passion. April and the other Quartet are watching as well, though without the hostility. Guess they are studying their opponents, which is good, they will need every bit of help to give us a good fight. We don’t want them to be immediately crushed, that simply isn't good entertainment.

I step in towards her and she moves away, our blades meet and then we break apart. Whoever said swordplay was similar to dance was damn right.

I cast a field of inae and use it to move us even faster than before. To anyone viewing we are probably nothing but a blur, but we aren’t performing for the live audience. After all, they aren’t who matter.

The ones that truly matter are those that they represent – the clip watchers. It's not the politicians, it's the average everyday working person. The ones that will sit enraptured at their screens after a hard day. We want them to watch us and be entertained completely.

After all, the best way to gain fame is to go viral. Every human knows that, from the most powerful politician to the smallest child. The best way to go viral is to get into the minds of all your fans. We must be so good, so entertaining, that we stop becoming people. We must become a phenomenon, not just a small one either, we need to be ubiquitous. Like gravity.

Some might say we need to become a Moon. But instead of just one planet, we need to control the tides of the entire universe. I guess it is a good thing we are the Moonlight duo.

Ray and I will be the ones to educate the rest of the universe on this fundamental truth. After all, we are the Moonlight Duo, going viral is kinda what we do. We wouldn’t be nearly as popular if Ray wasn’t so cute though, she is really carrying me.

We stop our fight and I wrap my arms tightly around Ray and flip us upside down. Then after a few very sparkly spins, I throw us right towards the window I scouted ahead of time.

We go soaring over the crowd, a flaming moon setting everything in our path aflame. As we crash through the window – with a barrier of inae to absorb the impact – I drop a special grenade and it goes off behind us, projecting a holographic fire.

It was the last part that has been missing from our performances. Something that I only realized during our time in our arena.

  Explosions are really cool.

We crash through and end up in a small room, where Initae is waiting for us with a big smile. She gives us a thumbs up. “You two did your thing again, huh? Now, how about we go back home?”

Home, huh. I guess City Stelarum is a kind of home. Though if I am being honest, wherever Ray is is a good enough home for me. After all, she is really cute, and she is currently giving me a look along the lines of: ‘headrubs or I murder you.’

Who am I to refuse such a request? Only an evil person would do that, and I am a perfectly moral and sane person. Plus, giving her headrubs is fun and pleasurable.

No matter what comes next, we will conquer it. After all, we are the blazing moon lighting the sky aflame. None can stop us, for we will simply obliterate them if they do.

  So, bring it on.
