Chapter 29

Kennon slowly woke to a soft glow above his bed. A combination of timers and rune lights inscribed on the ceiling. A simple device even the poor used. It felt like a luxury. And it made him not want to get out of bed.

Then he remembered that Tutor promised him he was on the verge of unlocking several spells. And he bolted out of bed.

After freshening up he was ready for a day of nothing but magic lessons. Bev was even going to join in. starting with a test of just how much knowledge transferred between the two of them.

Kennon activated Tutor and before he had a chance to ask a question it started talking.

Why did you cut me off! You were minutes away from several levels!

“Sorry, but I need more in my life than magic training.”

Fair enough. Now, activate splash and identify its parts.

Over the next couple minutes Tutor quizzes Kennon on the basic components of the splash spell and corrected a few mistakes.

No, that is the summoning portion. It is what creates the water when you don’t target existent water.

  “Ok I get it.”

  Water magic level 2

  Smother unlocked

  Ice magic level 2

  Cool unlocked

  Freeze unlocked

  Mixed element spell thermostat unlocked

  Fire magic level 4

  Fire ball unlocked

  Lightning magic level 2

  Arc unlocked

  Wind magic level 3

  Buffet unlocked

  Earth magic level 3

  Animate earth

Kennon stared at the list in awe. Why did so many unlock at once?

Ice magic depends on level two water magic. Fire magic four requires ice magic one. Lighting two requires fire. Wind three lightning. Earth three needed Water two.

You don’t strictly need the other magics. And most specialize in time. But they build on each other. It is hard to get some without the others. Go ahead and try them out. You look like you would turn me off if i kept talking.

It was absolutely right. Naturally he started with a fire ball to a tree.

The spell was far more complicated than fire bolt. But after a few moments of inspection he could see repeating patterns in the spell array. It was almost like it was layering several fire bolts on top of each other.

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

It took almost two minutes to weave, and when it was done he launched it.

He stared at the place that used to be a tree with his mouth wide. He simply stared while flaming branches fell around the burning stump.

“Void! Kennon, do you want to burn our house down!”

Words could not describe how beautiful it was. But Bev was right. He started to weave smother. He sensed it wasn’t quite enough and empowered it. When he finally cast it a centimeter thick layer of water covered the entire blast zone. Putting out all the fires instantly.

“Are you drowning us now?” Bev said laughing.

Kennon brought up cool, then dismissed it and cast thermostat. It was clearly a mixture of heat and cool. With a focus on control. Getting to a temperature and staying there.

Deciding to have a little fun he brought the tree stump up to its flash point and watched as it almost exploded.

He ignored Bev’s protest and cast freeze on the entire blast zone of debris covered mud.

It took a lot of mana but when cast it froze in an instant!

He targeted a nearby stick and tossed an arc at it. Electrical energy formed over his palm, flickered like it was searching, then blasted the frost covered stick.

This was the best day of Kennon’s life.

He cast buffet and watched as the targeted tree limb started to be blown this way and that. Almost randomly.

He supposed he should finish the list and cast animate earth. It was basically telekinesis for dirt. A small pile of dirt covered over the ashes of the tree trunk.

Bev stared at him. She was covered in debris, just like him.

“Couldn’t you have done that a little farther away?”

  Kennon laughed.

Bev was only slightly annoyed by the mess. And the joy rolling off her brother more than made up for what irritation she had.

She still told him to keep destructive testing farther away.

She was finishing up his sun tiger cloak. The sewing portion would be done soon. The enchanting would be a bit harder. She didn’t actually know how to inscribe cloth. But Tutor said it wasn’t that hard.

For now she was getting a crash course on magic. And it was bizarre.

This portion of the spell is-

  “Elemental converter. For creating force.”

She could have sworn she hadn’t known that mere seconds ago. But it just seemed so obvious.

Every time Tutor mentioned something Kennon already knew it felt like she was instantly granted an instinctual knowledge of it.

She had no idea the thermostat spell existed. But the instant Tutor mentioned it she knew it was a combination of “heat” and “cool”. She didn’t know cool existed till she had that thought either.

She didn’t understand any of it as well as Kennon. When Tutor started asking deeper questions, things beyond knowledge, Bev had to stop and think. She could figure those things out. But it was like Kennon knowing something meant she had memorized the book. But understanding the book took more effort. And time.

And she didn’t seem to know the book existed till someone told her.

When she figured that out she asked Tutor to give a list of subjects It and Kennon had covered.

Every subject mentioned seemed to refresh Bev’s memory of something she thought she didn’t know. After two hours of this she stared at her proficiencies.

  Fire magic - level 3

  Wind magic - level 2

  Water magic - level 2

  Earth magic - level 3

  Ice magic - level 2

  Lightning magic - level 2

  Divination magic - level 2

  Body auras - level 2

  Arcane magic - level 3

  Mana imbuement - level 2

Especially important to her was body aura level 2. Which granted her

  Durability aura

The moment she got that one Tutor told her that it would benefit her if she kept it active as often as possible. Bev knew that was because it paired well with movement aura. If she had both active she had basically just increased her entire physique.

She tried to keep it active. And to gather mana at the same time. While enchanting durability, gathering, and self repair into the cloak by weaving in steel thread.

Needless to say it was a difficult process.

Thank you for sharing my journey. To help me walk it I have a set up. It is 20 chapters ahead and releases at the same time as the Royal Road chapters.
