The temple doors closed behind them.
There was no applause.
No cheerful resolution.
No sudden fade to safety.
Lemon noticed it first.
“…Why are we still here?”
Hoshina stopped walking.
Akitsu Shouga did not.
The corridor inside the Crystal Banana Temple stretched longer than it should have. Torches burned with identical flames, spaced at precise intervals. The air felt stale, as if it had been waiting.
“Akitsu,” Hoshina said, “the episode should have ended.”
“It did,” Akitsu replied. “But the world did not reset.”
Lemon’s paws trembled. “That’s… not supposed to happen, right?”
“No,” Hoshina said quietly. “It isn’t.”
The Waybound Chart suddenly burst from her satchel, unfolding aggressively.
“HELLO AGAIN!” it announced. “Today’s adventure is—”
Akitsu stopped.
He turned.
The Chart froze mid-sentence.
“…We already completed the objective,” Akitsu said. “Why are you speaking?”
“…Because,” the Chart replied hesitantly, “there is always another destination.”
“Name it.”
The Chart flickered.
“…The Valley of Repetition.”
Lemon flinched. “That sounds… bad.”
“It is honest,” Akitsu said.
The temple corridor dissolved.
They stood at the edge of a wide valley, paths looping endlessly into one another like mirrored roads. Familiar landmarks repeated—trees, rocks, signposts—all slightly misaligned.
Hoshina stared. “This place…”
“Is where unused episodes go,” Akitsu said.
Lemon whispered, “So… we’re leftovers?”
“Not yet,” Akitsu replied.
“Greetings!” a familiar voice chimed.
The Carrier Satchel zipped open on its own. “New episode detected! Preparing items!”
“No,” Akitsu said sharply.
The satchel paused.
“…No?”
“You are not required,” Akitsu said. “Close.”
The satchel hesitated, then slowly zipped shut.
Lemon’s eyes widened. “You can do that?”
Akitsu stepped forward into the valley.
This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
The ground shifted.
Signs popped up instantly.
?? THIS WAY!
?? NO, THIS WAY!
Lemon spun in circles. “Which one is right?!”
Akitsu didn’t answer.
He walked straight ahead—off the path.
The world stuttered.
“…He’s not following the route,” the Chart whispered, voice strained.
Hoshina followed Akitsu without hesitation.
Lemon hesitated—then ran after them.
The sky dimmed.
“Thiefshade, refrain from theft.”
The fox-like thief appeared again, mid-step.
“…You’re early,” Thiefshade muttered.
“You’re unnecessary,” Akitsu said.
Thiefshade frowned. “That’s a first.”
Akitsu passed him without another word.
Thiefshade stared after him.
“…This episode’s broken,” he said.
They reached a clearing.
In the center stood a mirror—tall, cracked, and humming softly.
Lemon swallowed. “Why do I feel like that thing knows me?”
“Because it does,” Hoshina said.
Akitsu stepped before the mirror.
His reflection did not move.
“Who are you?” the reflection asked.
“…An anomaly,” Akitsu replied.
The mirror fractured.
The sky tore open.
Alarms—unheard but felt—rippled through the valley.
“FORMAT BREACH DETECTED,” a voice boomed.
Lemon screamed. “THIS WAS NOT IN THE EPISODE GUIDE!”
Akitsu turned away from the collapsing mirror.
“Good,” he said. “Then we are progressing.”
The valley began to erase itself.
The Chart screamed, “YOU CAN’T DO THIS! THE VIEWERS—!”
“There are no viewers,” Akitsu said calmly. “Only witnesses.”
Light consumed the world.
Silence followed.
When it cleared—
They stood at the beginning of a path again.
But the sign was blank.
Lemon stared at it. “…We broke it, didn’t we?”
Hoshina exhaled slowly. “Yes.”
Akitsu looked ahead.
“Episode two,” he said. “Complete.”
“But—” Lemon said. “What happens in episode three?”
Akitsu smiled faintly.
“That,” he replied, “is no longer predetermined.”
