Koa
The hierarchy and make up of a hive were often rather complicated. Koa himself sat right in the complications. His father was from a blood line of long-standing vampires, while his mother was a shaman with no ties to anything vampiric. She followed none of their guidelines, dealt with none of them without reason and raised her children in a between state. Yet by hive logic she was still considered one of the hive simply by birthing two vampiric children.
Koa could not disobey any higher-powered vampires, it was part of their nature, yet he always had this awkward stance of being more powerful then his father but he was his father. A leader was to be followed with little to no resistance, yet they had groups of Organizers that were chosen to maintain functionality and protections of all they hives and there words were to be held as equal to a hive leader.
Koa had always been apart of a hive, had never had a desire to not be apart of the hive and he felt he could say that the hive was changing since the unveiling of their existences. Some of the changes were good. His sister Julissa who’d never been drawn to the hive was no longer being pulled so strongly to it. Her ability to blend in and mold seamlessly into a college was important for the continued future of everything.
But somethings were worse. It wasn’t just hunters that tracked them anymore the guys who’d attacked them seemed to have been stalking Julissa for weeks now as she went to class. Koa was just glad Julissa had been inside.
Julissa hadn’t receive vampire training. Yes, she had some magics, but she’d been set on a mostly normal life blending in. It also scared him what would have happened if he hadn’t called her to do him a favor. If she’d gone home to her dorms alone.
It was these fears that weren’t born from that night that had Koa volunteering to investigate the organizations that were against vampires even breathing. And the public fear of how vampires might retaliate had the Organizers focusing on observing those investigating the human groups.
And Rojan was assigned to closely watch them as the incidents of Koa and the others on his team needing to divert attacks.
Koa had known eventually he’d be trailed by Rojan seeing as he himself was better suited to work his way into situations without being noticed and Koa hadn’t been too concerned seeing as his only goal was to defuse situations not vendettas or revenge.
If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
He was fine with letting the human police handle things. If they would.
Koa also didn’t think he broke from the guidelines of his job. He didn’t jump to conclusions with the cashier. He stayed at the ready in case the two drunks did cause issues and backed down when she had it covered. He accepted the license plate number despite the fact he didn’t need it.
Truthfully though Koa had looked at the lower standing drunks and thought them harmless and had been kicking himself for not following someone else. Misery’s words had highlighted something. They were drunk and ready for trouble without any reason holding them back. They’d looked at a woman that fit a fiction stereo-type and assumed she might be a vampire. Continued to think it until she threatened a connection to a human hierarchy.
It took only twenty minutes of following them for them to find someone who fit their preconceptions on the side of the road. And they weren’t in fact a vampire. Things got a bit out of hand when the homeless, mentally Ill man panicked during the attack and stabbed one of the attackers.
And with his presence around a gaping wound while being a vampire received raised brows.
Knowing the police visit the straight forward cashier with a bad attitude was troublesome and he needed to go through and clean things up. He didn’t think it should be too bad. Not enough to drag in the Organizer. Finding out the Organizer had already met said sharp tongued woman and that she had more information then he could ignore he’d had every intention to bring her in to the Organizer.
Rojan though found them first and Koa watched a man who was cool and dangerous who never fumbled become fully enraged by a human woman. Him lunging at her, her capability, will and understanding baffled them probably more then it should have and made them look incapable.
And he was sure that Misery was the reason he was opening his door at noon to find Rojan standing arms crossed. Koa stared at the fully dressed man no sign of him being injured at all anymore.
They’d finally left the convenience store at maybe two AM and they’d gone right from their to Rojan’s hotel then to report to the hive leaders. He’d only gotten to bed at six and now Rojan was here chirper and ready to go.
“What?” Koa asked yawning.
“I need you to come with me to see Misery.” He told him plainly and without any sign of concern.
“Why?” Koa asked crossing his arms too. Rojan twitched and shifted.
“Because you’re a local agent and I am not supposed to interfere with humans unless they are an issue and my higher ups see her not as an issue but as a curiosity. Thus I am to interact with her but with official backing. Thus you who is familiar to her.” Rojan listed. Koa groaned.
“They didn’t take into account you’re bond to her?”
“They decided that the personal tie was too greyed to override standard procedure.” Rojan explained. “And it was either concede or provoke the higher to look closer at her.” He explained.
Koa let out a whistled breath. Yeah he couldn’t guess how the highest levels of vampire would react to the potentially combative disrespectful image of a woman named Misery.
“Fine.” Koa agreed in a hissed breath. “Give me a bit.” He told the Organizer enjoying letting the door shut in his face.
