Chapter 22: Navigation in the Palace of Lost Souls

Leaving the roast chicken-scented Golden Chicken Mountain, Slayer and Singularity (and Wangcai) entered an area of deathly silent gray fog.

Visibility here was extremely low; even the tactical visor's thermal imaging showed only blurry noise.

The Palace of Lost Souls (Mi Hun Dian).

There were no specific buildings here, only countless stone walls that constantly moved and reorganized. The air was filled with hallucinogenic spores; one breath would make an ordinary person forget who they were.

  "Big Hero, slow down."

Singularity clutched the corner of Slayer's cape tightly (though Slayer had no cape, he was grabbing the Praetor Suit's heat vent), his other hand staring fixedly at the Eight Trigrams Compass.

"This place is eerie. This is the 'Nine Palaces Eight Trigrams Soul-Confusing Grand Array.' The walls shift positions every incense stick's time. If we don't follow the 'Gate of Life,' we'll be trapped in the spacetime rift, never to reincarnate..."

Singularity's compass needle spun wildly like a broken electric fan.

"It's over." Singularity turned pale. "The magnetic field here is jammed by demons. Navigation system down."

  Slayer stopped.

He looked around. Front, back, left, right—all gray high walls, looking identical.

He looked down at Wangcai by his feet.

Wangcai sniffed, looking equally confused. The smells here were too mixed, full of hallucinations; even a dog's nose failed.

Slayer looked up. On the UI interface inside his helmet, a line of red text was glaring:

  [Path Calculation Failed.]

[Reason: Terrain data changing in real-time.]

If it were an ordinary person, they would probably start despairing by now.

  But Slayer was different.

The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

He tilted his head, seeming to ponder a question:

Since the road changes, if I demolish all the walls, wouldn't it stop changing?

  He raised his left arm.

  Click.

The arm blade popped out, flashing a cold glint in the gray fog.

"Big... Big Hero?" Singularity had a bad feeling. "What are you doing? We need to find the 'Gate of Life'! According to the hexagrams, we should go three steps southeast, then..."

  Slayer ignored Singularity's mumbo-jumbo.

He turned to face the thick stone wall directly in front, covered in eerie runes.

  BOOM!

  One punch.

The stone wall exploded instantly, debris flying.

Behind the wall... was another wall.

Slayer didn't pause. He retracted his fist, thrust his left arm blade forward, and pulled horizontally.

  Zzzzt—Crash!

The second wall was sliced open like paper and collapsed.

Singularity was stunned: "That's a load-bearing wall! That's the eye of the array! You'll destroy the array structure doing this!"

  Slayer glanced back at him.

  Destroy the array?

  That was exactly his goal.

Since this array made him get lost, then let this array disappear.

  Slayer activated "Bulldozer Mode."

He stopped taking any detours, stopped looking for any intersections. He picked a direction (the direction of Fengdu City) and began linear advancement.

  BANG! BOOM! CLANG!

Every loud noise was accompanied by the collapse of a wall.

The Soul-Confusing Grand Array, originally operating with precision, now let out waves of energy wails resembling screams.

Because it was being Physically Cracked.

Singularity followed behind Slayer, stepping on piles of gravel, looking at the straight, terrifying tunnel extending forward.

He looked at the compass in his hand.

  The needle... stopped moving.

Because it pointed straight ahead. There was no interference there, only a violently opened, transparent avenue.

"This works too..." Singularity muttered. "What Nine Palaces Eight Trigrams, what Miracle Gates... in the face of absolute power, it's all bells and whistles."

On this path, Slayer demolished for a full five kilometers.

Finally, as the last wall painted with a hideous ghost face was kicked flying by Slayer, the fog before them instantly dissipated.

Ahead, a towering black city appeared in view.

  Fengdu City.

Slayer retracted his arm blade and dusted off his pauldron.

  He looked back.

The Palace of Lost Souls, originally like a maze, now had a wide, straight, well-ventilated Ruins Avenue right through the middle.

Singularity stood on the avenue, took out his Heavenly Dao Tablet, and silently deleted the complex maze map.

He drew a straight line on it.

  [New Underworld Landmark: Slayer Expressway.]

[Navigation Voice Update: Please go straight. Keep going straight. If you encounter a wall, that's the wall's problem, not the road's.]

  Slayer strode toward Fengdu City.

Singularity hurriedly caught up. Passing by Wangcai, he found the dog peeing on the new road to mark territory.

  "Path Planning."

Singularity looked at the back ahead, an inexplicable sense of security rising in his heart.

"This is security... Following him, you never have to worry about getting lost. Because where he walks, becomes the road."
