Chapter 8: Secrets

Lunaflare had been kicked out of the Magic Academy after only half a year, having already earned her graduation qualification. She was living quietly in her adoptive father’s mansion in the capital, spending her days reading.

Occasional requests from nobles asking her to tutor their sons came in, but she turned them all down flat.

However, when she turned sixteen, the Pantios ducal house made a direct request to the Alias family—the duke himself came in person. Even Lunaflare couldn’t refuse that one, and Quintus ordered her to go.

She accepted on two conditions: she would not weed the evening primroses that had taken over the mansion garden, and the payment would be sent directly to her.

The student at that time was Luciana.

The two girls were the same age but complete opposites in personality. Strangely, that worked in their favor, and they began interacting more like friends than teacher and student.

Lunaflare lived in the Pantios ducal residence.

Although she was only an adopted daughter, she was treated with every courtesy befitting a noble lady.

But one day she started feeling unpleasant stares.

The stares grew stronger by the day, until finally the owner of those eyes appeared right in front of her room.

It was her nightly habit to step outside for some night air and stargazing. He had been waiting for her return.

  It was Remedios.

He was five years older, bigger, and far stronger.

He forced his way into her room, pinned Lunaflare against the wall, and began groping her body with his free hand.

  But she stayed perfectly calm.

She wrapped her left arm around the right arm that pinned her, locked his elbow, and the moment pain made him flinch she drove her right hand hard into his throat.

Ignoring the choking man, she twisted her body while still controlling his arm, swept his legs out from under him, slammed him to the floor, and pinned his shoulder in a lock.

She untied the sash of her nightgown and bound his hands behind his back.

When he struggled, she kicked him in the balls.

Remedios groaned, but she couldn’t let the household hear, so she stuffed his own underwear into his mouth.

She bound his legs as well and rolled him onto his back.

A girl now stood over the man writhing like an insect on the floor.

Her nightgown hung open, fluttering in the breeze, her still-immature body bathed in moonlight.

Lunaflare crouched in front of him.

“Did you come to rape me?”

  “………”

  “Did you think you could?”

He tried to look away and refused to answer.

If she let him leave like this, her own position would be in danger.

She decided she needed to give him enough terror or humiliation that he could never defy her again.

  Lunaflare stripped off his clothes.

  “You are my servant.”

  He nodded.

Lunaflare untied the sash around his arms and cut the one around his legs.

“Go back to your room and rest.”

He straightened his clothes, bowed, and staggered out.

The next day she woke late, but ate breakfast as usual and trained Luciana.

Remedios was nowhere to be seen.

That day passed quietly. So did the next, and the one after.

Exactly one week later, there was a knock on her door at night.

She opened it without a word.

Remedios stood there, holding both hands out in front of him.

Lunaflare turned him around, untied her sash, and bound his wrists.

From that night on, their strange relationship began.

It continued until the day Luciana entered the royal palace.

  ◇

  “It’s been a while.”

In Remedios’s office, Lunaflare sat in his chair.

Remedios knelt beside her and pressed his lips to her foot.

  The memories came back vividly.

Remedios had welcomed Denaris’s group into the mansion, prepared rooms even for the guards, and treated them with the utmost courtesy.

Then he ordered a servant to bring Lunaflare here and strictly forbade anyone from approaching the room.

The oath of servitude was still in effect.

  He truly believed that.

Lunaflare stood up and offered him the chair.

“Today I’m here as a guest. I think the reason is obvious—you got completely played by that vixen.”

  Remedios gestured to the couch.

  “…So it really was her…”

“I hear the grain merchant turned you down too. You’ve been thoroughly underestimated.”

  “What should I do!?”

Remedios leaned forward, his face twisted with pain and humiliation.

“If you accept the investigation they’ll fabricate evidence. If you refuse they’ll use it as an excuse to crush you. Your only option is to fake illness and buy time.”

  “Will that work?”

“Of course not. It’s just a delay. But doing nothing is worse. I want that woman to claim the throne.”

“She wants to be queen? That’s why she killed three people.”

“Listen. She is the daughter of the Trician royal family. If she claims the throne, the Kaios house won’t sit still. Their own destroyed royal line will take the country back. The Kaios and Valerius houses will almost certainly split.”

  “Destroyed? What do you mean?”

“I can’t tell you the details, but those two houses share a secret. It’s better for us if they turn on each other. Just buy time.”

  Remedios still looked uneasy.

“I want to save Luciana. She’s one of the few friends I have.”

“Is she going to be all right…?”

Lunaflare pulled him into her arms, resting his head against her chest.

“She’ll be fine. I’ve placed one of my most outstanding former students inside her residence. If they sense any danger to her life, they’ll get her out. Don’t worry.”

  “Thank you… truly.”

  Remedios wept against Lunaflare’s chest.
