Chapter Two: Wedding Vows

"Emerome, are you enjoying the carriage ride so far?" Raphtalia looked up from her dragon egg, "I am, my lady. Any trip is enjoyable when my lady is around." Emerome smiled brightly. "That's good to hear." Raphtalia smiled. My lady smiled! Her smile is so beautiful, and it's only for me. Emerome wiggled in her seat. "Emerome, look. New cracks are forming along the shell. It's getting closer to hatching with every drop of my mana." Raphtalia held the dragon egg in front of Emerome. "It's so pretty, my lady." Emerome gently rubbed the egg.

When the carriage arrived at the palace, Raphtalia and Emeorme stepped out to a large crowd of nobles and commoners waiting to witness the wedding. Wow, there are so many noble families here. And they all hate my lady! If I had mana, I would blast them away! Oh, that's my mom over there...wait...that's my mom over there! Emerome immediately looked away from the crowd. "Emerome, hold this for me, please." Raphtalia handed the dragon egg to Emerome, "Of course, my lady." Emerome held the egg close to her chest. The egg can probably feel the difference in who's holding it. I mean, compared to my lady, I'm flat. Emerome glanced at Raphtalia's breasts.

While walking closer to the palace entrance, Emerome picked up on a lot of whispered conversations about a royal being with a commoner with a massive pool of mana. Are they talking about the second prince or the third prince? Maybe the first princess or the second princess? Emerome glanced at the crowd of commoners. Feeling a subtle, yet intense, shift in the air. Emerome glanced back at Raphtalia. Why is my lady mad? Emerome looked forward, seeing crown prince Recknoght standing with another woman. "My lady, do you know who she is?" Emerome whispered, "No, not at all." Raphtalia answered. So, who is this harlot? My future subjects are talking about her when they're referring to a commoner with a massive pool of mana, and she's standing side by side with my fiancé. Raphtalia's expression darkened.

Raphtalia stopped in front of Recknoght. "So, who is this filthy, inferior, snaggle-tooth, two-faced, commoner harlot?" Raphtalia cocked her brow. Emerome listened to the quiet roar of negative comments about Raphtalia's words. "You have no right to ask me that question. This here is Felicia Voldengol, and she's not only a better mage than you, but she's going to be the new queen of this kingdom, Dragonborne." Recknoght stated. "Oh? And how do you plan on doing that? Today's our wedding, and last I checked, royal customs state that you'd need a valid reason to annul our engagement. Even then, you'd have to wait a year before you could get engaged again." Raphtalia placed her hand on her hip.

"Oh, I have plenty of valid reasons to annul our engagement," Recknoght smirked. "Oh, really? Let's hear them. I'm dying to know what I've done over the years." Raphtalia said. "Five years ago, you brutally assaulted your maid for making a mistake when I visited your estate," Recknoght claimed, "So you say. Which maid was it?" Raphtalia tilted her head. "Your family maid, obviously," Recknoght answered. "Funny, five years ago I bought a personal maid. Since I was tired of doing everything myself for the four years before that. Let's see, I was about thirteen when all of the maids in my estate stopped serving me. So, it couldn't have been a family maid. And my personal maid was ordered to watch after my egg after she had met you." Raphtalia countered. "But please, do continue," Raphtalia said.

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.

"Uhh...ah. Three years ago, when you had stolen from the Dragon Wears store." Recknoght claimed, "That would be a shameful act. However, I had my personal maid pay for my items while we left. If you don't know, I have been going there four days a week, every week, for the past thirteen years. The owner knows me very well, and he knows that since I've gotten my maid, she holds onto my money and pays for me. Essentially, I'm able to leave with my items while my maid is paying for them." Raphtalia explained, "Oh, and before you say it. The gold pieces I took from that kid two months ago were part of her mother's thank you. Since I had my personal maid run their family shop while I treated the girl's mother. If treatment weren't so pricey, that woman would've been able to get her treatment weeks before I found out." Raphtalia added.

"W-well...there was..uh..y-your act of treason, yeah." Recknoght claimed, "Treason? Now I'm curious, what have I done that is considered treason?" Raphtlia cocked her brow. "For years, you have documented lies and deceived this kingdom when it comes to your dragon egg, your magic power, your magic aptitude, and your mana reserves for higher status. But I won't let you get away with it." Recknoght pointed at the egg in Emerome's arms. "You're highness, if I may. That accusation against my lady is the absolute dumbest shit I have ever heard. Do you even know how a dragon egg hatches? I know, because my lady, a member of a ducal family that is trusted with taming dragons, fully explained the process to me. A dragon hatches based on the mana received. Once it has enough mana, the dragon hatches. Not that fucking dumb make-believe time shit everyone seems to believe in. And it's not like my lady fucking lied about her mana or magic on documentation. A magic aptitude test, a magic power test, and a mana reserves test were held in front of her entire class when she was seventeen, with the proctors being the court magicians. My lady can't lie about something she didn't write, let alone the fact that you didn't even get into the top twenty of any test held that day." Emerome snarled.

"Oh, the manaless former noble. Who gave you permission to speak? You're lucky I'm generous enough not to have you executed for the tone you gave me." Recknoght said. "Nosscreus, disrespect me and my name all you want. I don't care about it. But if you ever speak ill of my maid again, I will become the villainess you all so desperately want me to be. So, for that, not only will I annul our engagement. But I'll leave this kingdom." Raphtalia turned around, looking over her shoulder. "And just so you know. The reason the why my tests all came back unidentifiable was that the technology can't accurately depict my ability. So, I'll tell you. I have an unlimited mana reserve, I have every baseline and subtrait magic aptitude, and my magic power is above that of a dragon's. Farewell, and if you or anyone connected to the royal family or noble families tries to bring us back. I will reduce this kingdom to a massive crater of ash. Of course, after the commoners are safe, that is." Raphtalia walked off with Emerome back to the carriage.
