Chapter 2: First Step Into The World

Kai closed his eyes, taking deep breaths—the mechanical calm of a soldier before a breach. He exhaled once, long and slow, and stepped out of the dusty room.

The staircase was centered in a shaft of morning light that felt far too holy for a man like him. As he descended, the air tasted of ancient stone and the faint, flowery musk of the "Vessel."

Click. A digital window shivered into existence.

  [WARNING: ENERGY LEVEL 10%]

"Great. I’m already on low power mode," Kai muttered. He needed the rules before he ran out of quarters. "System. Can you talk back, or are you just a glorified pop-up ad?"

[USER VOICE RECOGNIZED. REPLYING: MY FUNCTIONS ARE AUDIBLE AND INTERACTIVE.]

"Right. And I’m not calling you 'System.' You need a name." Kai paused. A bitter memory flickered—a girl with a sharp laugh who looked through him as if he were made of glass. "Let’s go with Serene. She always had an answer for everything."

  [CONFIRMED. NAME UPDATED TO: SERENE.]

"Tell me, Serene. What happens if I hit zero?"

[INFO: IF DEPLETED NATURALLY TO 0%, NO PENALTY. IF RELEASED MANUALLY, A 6-HOUR COOLDOWN IS TRIGGERED.]

[WARNING: AT 0%, USER WILL SUFFER 'LETHARGIC ATROPHY.' PHYSICAL STRENGTH REDUCED BY 80%.]

"So I become a human wet noodle," Kai sighed. "Fine. It’s a living."

He reached the ground floor. It was an archetypal hub—heavy timber and polished oak—but the silence was eerie. Only the smell of floor wax and abandonment. He pushed through the front doors.

The Kingdom of Okelhaven was a masterpiece of "Second-World" architecture. Steep gables leaned over cobblestones; vines of glowing Aether-lilies hummed with a magical frequency. It was beautiful, peaceful, and entirely too bright.

Kai turned back to look at the "Gate" he’d just exited. Above the door, a neon-pink magical sign flickered: THE WINKING NYMPH - SHORT STAYS WELCOME. A love hotel.

Kai caught his reflection in a window: younger, messy white hair, leather harness. He looked like the kind of man who belonged in a place called The Winking Nymph.

"No, I told you, Father! I was just talking!"

A shrill voice shattered the air. A young woman in silk was backing away from a man whose face was the color of an overripe beet.

"Nobody 'talks' inside the Nymph!" the man roared. "Which one of these bastards was it?"

The girl’s eyes darted like a trapped animal's. She spotted Kai. She lunged, locking her arm through his. "Fine! You caught us! Here he is!"

The father froze, eyeing Kai’s dusty boots. "This? This white-haired shrimp? You chose this peasant?"

  [MULTIPLE INSULTS DETECTED. ENERGY +5%]

Kai felt the warm hum. The "Old Kai" would have stammered an apology. That version of him was dead. As the girl started to loosen her grip to bolt, Kai clamped his arm down, trapping her hand. He didn't just accept the lie; he owned it.

"You’re right, sir," Kai said, his voice carrying to the crowd. "I did sleep with her. And honestly? I expected more for the price of a room."

The father stopped dead. The girl went ghostly.

  [ANGER DETECTED. ENERGY +7%]

"What did you say?" the father hissed.

Kai leaned forward, whispering. "I mean, she’s got the thickest legs in the kingdom. It’s a workout just staying in the bed."

  "YOU BASTARD!"

The man swung a heavy, telegraphed haymaker. Kai didn't flinch. With the energy surging, the world slowed. He saw the sweat, the dip of the shoulder.

Kai stepped aside—a clean, effortless dodge. "Serene, release 5%."

He tapped a jab into the man’s solar plexus. It wasn't a punch; it was a discharge. A pulse of purple kinetic energy exploded on contact. The father folded like a lawn chair.

Kai didn't stay for the credits. He snatched a green apple from a stall, tossed a wink at the girl, and vanished into the crowd. He felt no guilt. He felt no need to apologize. He felt, for the first time, in control.

  CHIME.

The sky turned gold. A massive holographic scroll unfurled.

[WORLD BROADCAST: PRINCE ARTHUR HAS PURIFIED THE WHISPERING WOODS!]

  [LEGEND SCORE: +5,000]

The city erupted. People fell to their knees. "It's his glory!" a kid chirped. "The more we believe in him, the stronger he gets!"

Kai watched the golden light fade. The Adulation Engine. Arthur was a brand fueled by a billion fans.

And Kai? Kai was the guy stealing apples and punching dads.

He turned a corner into an alleyway where older teens were whispering. "Elara’s lot burned another tax carriage," one hissed. "She’s looking for people who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. People who hate the Prince."

Kai took a bite of the stolen apple. It was tart and crisp. If Arthur was the sun, Kai needed the people who preferred the dark.

High above on the balcony of the Nymph, Gyles adjusted a glowing green monocle. He watched Kai—a white-haired glitch in a perfect world.

  [ANOMALY DETECTED: KAI-001]

[RECOMMENDED ACTION: TERMINATE & RESTORE BALANCE]

"Do you have any idea how much paperwork a Termination requires?" Gyles muttered. "I’d have to file a Soul-Loss Affidavit. A 'Lost in Field' report is only two pages."

He tapped his monocle and pressed a glowing stamp into thin air.

  [STATUS: FILED AS 'LOST ASSET']

Gyles turned back into the darkness. He had a coffee break to get to.
