1- Amelia

As Alexander lay there dying on the cold hard ground, his breath was heavy. All the things that he never got to experience in his life came rushing to his mind.

He said to himself, crying, “I had no friends to care for me.”

  “Friends. Uploading…Done.”

‘What was that?’ He thought to himself, but continued.

  “I never had a girlfriend!”

  “Girlfriend. Uploading…Done.”

  “I was always weak. “

  “Strong. Uploading…Done.”

He continued complaining about every bad thing in his life, and the list was big. But the biggest one was his last request before finally dying, and that was.

“I never found myself reincarnated into that fantasy world I always dreamed of…”

“Reincarnation into a fantasy world. Uploading…Done.”

And with that, he finally died.

  ---

Alexander quickly shot up in bed, and grabbed his chest, trying to feel a heartbeat. To his surprise, there was one. “Was that all a nightmare?” He scanned his environment. His room was much larger, with stone walls and stained - glass windows. He was also in a larger bed, one much different from his own room.

He heard the door open, and a beautiful girl with long pink hair and clear pale skin peeked inside. She gasped, “You’re finally awake!” She rushed up to Alexander and knelt by his bed.

“Thank god! I was so worried about you!”

Alexander, surprised, said, “Uh, where am I, and who are you?”

Her smile faded. “What do you mean? Do you not recognize your own room?”

  “This isn’t my room…”

  “Do you recognize me?”

  “Can’t say that I do…”

“You can’t remember anything? I was worried this might happen…” Alexander could tell she was trying to hold back her tears. “I’m Lily, your girlfriend…and this is your home…”

Alexander then looked around the room again, slowly. “This is my home?”

“Yes…” she said. “Do you even remember your name?”

  “My name is Alexander.”

“Where did you get that from? Your name is Amelia. This is worse than I thought…”

  “Amelia?” he asked.

“Here.” Lily handed him a mirror.

A beautiful girl with long black hair and red eyes stared back at him. “This is what I look like?”

He remembered one thing he had complained about.

“It’s hard being a man in today’s world!”

  “Female. Uploading…Done.”

“It looks like they took my complaint seriously,” he thought to himself.

“You really can’t remember anything, can you…” She then released all her tears at Alexander’s side.

Alexander then hesitantly reached out his new hand to comfort her, but quickly put it back to his side. He opened his mouth, but words couldn’t come out.

He thought to himself, “I’ve never gotten close to anyone like this before, so how am I supposed to comfort her?”

After a long pause, he spoke. “Sorry, while I may remember nothing, that doesn’t mean I can’t create fresh memories. Especially if it’s with someone who seems to care about me…just give me some time…”

She then looked up at Alexander, wiping her tears. “Yes…perhaps you’re right…and maybe one day all of your memories will come back…”

“Do you feel any better?” Alexander asked.

“Yes, a little. Thank you; you were always good at comforting people. Maybe it’s just instinct for you.”

Alexander then suggested to her, “How about you show me around?”

Lily’s face then lit up. “Really?! Yes, I’d love to show you around! It’d be like a date!”

His palms started getting sweaty, and his heart started beating faster.

“A date? I’ve never been on one of those…” Alexander thought to himself. “What if I mess up this date?”

She quickly pulled his arm out of bed, jolting his mind. “Let’s go!”

Lily led Alexander into the hallway, and to his immediate left was a huge glass window. He looked outside to find a courtyard with two huge water fountains, on the left and on the right. He saw a carriage waiting outside the gated home, and in the distance, a city looking to be bustling with life.

“Just who was I reincarnated into?” He thought to himself.

“Incredible, isn’t it? I’m still blown away by the view, even after living here for years.” Lily said.

  “It really is…” he said.

He thought to himself, “Does someone like me really deserve to live here?”

Lily interrupted his thinking. “With that view aside, let’s continue to my favorite spot in this castle.”

Lily led Alexander up a flight of stairs to the rooftop. As they entered the doors to the rooftop, the warm breeze of the wind touched his unfamiliar face and whistled in his ears. The sun shone in his eyes, as it was high in the sky.

Lily stood at the edge and leaned over the railing. “This is where I come when there are lots of things on my mind.”

Alexander looked around his environment. He could see lush forests, hear birds chirping, and see gigantic mountains on the horizon reaching the clouds. It was a view Alexander had always dreamed of seeing, but could never…

Alexander hesitantly walked over and looked over the railing by Lily. “What’s on your mind right now?”

She took a deep breath. “Just the fact that I can’t imagine what you’re going through, waking up not knowing who you are, or where you are. And that I am powerless in this situation, I could have all the strength in the world, and I still can’t help you…”

Alexander looked up at the sky, the wind blowing his now long dark hair, his red eyes dilating as he looked on the horizon. “While that may be true, I think it’s all gonna be okay…”

Lily looked at him and saw a smile. “Why do you think that?”

“Because despite only having a handful of memories, I can see that my life is great here. I live in a home most people dream of living in. I can look at an amazing view anytime I want to. But most importantly, I have you, Lily.”

  Lily blushed. “Me?”

“Yes, despite all the negative emotions I know you feel, you’re trying your hardest to stay positive, all for me. That shows you really care about me. So, how can I not be happy, when I have everything I could ever want?”

Lily hugged him. “Thank you for saying that, Amelia. It means a lot. Now, let’s head back inside.”

Once they were back inside, Alexander couldn’t help but feel a burning question that had been with him ever since he woke up.

  “Where are my parents?”

Lily looked at him and said, “Sorry…I should have told you sooner…but your parents died years ago…”

Alexander’s knees fell to the ground, and tears began flowing out of his new red eyes. “What?”

Alexander had parents in his past life, but they always treated him harshly, and even told him he should have never been born.

“I just thought that things would be different. I thought I could have parents who actually cared for me and wanted me here. But I guess not…” he thought to himself.

  “I’m really sorry, Amelia…”

Alexander slowly stood up. “It’s not your fault, Lily. You couldn’t have possibly known a good time to tell me. Can you tell me what they were like?”

“They were the rulers of the land we currently live in, and they were kind to every person they came across. They did everything in their power to help their people. It’s probably where you got your empathetic nature from, and they were kind to me as well.”

She then paused for a moment. “When my own parents died, I had nowhere to go. But, it was you and your family who saved me, and let me live in this castle. They treated me like I was their own daughter, and for that I am eternally grateful. But it was you who truly saved me…”

  “I saved you?” Alexander hesitated.

“Yes, while your family let me live here, it was you who gave me a new purpose. You gave me something that I lost with my parents’ passing, and that was love. Ever since that day, I had only wished to give you the same thing back.”

“And that’s why losing my memories hurts you so deeply…?” He asked, ashamed.

  “Yes…”

Alexander hesitantly spoke, “I swear to you from this point on, I will give you the same love that you once felt from me.”

Lily, surprised, said, “Thank you once again, Amelia.”

Alexander thought to himself, “How am I supposed to give someone love that I never had?”
