Chasing Eternity
“You got everything?”
Ty patted her pockets, adjusted the fluffy red scarf around her neck, checked her cloak one last time, and then nodded.
“A month and a half passed by so fast.”
“Yeah.”
“We were happy, though, right?”
“Yeah.”
“Wholly, undeniably happy.”
With a lump in her throat, she averted her eyes and recited the words again. “Do you think it counts, even if we don’t live it now?”
“We can’t go back.”
“Have we really spent enough years for a lifetime together if we don’t live it now?”
“An eternity would not have been enough, let alone a lifetime,” he replied softly and sadly, the one to break the old memory this time.
“Well then…we’ll just have to keep going,” Ty responded, looking past the Academy gates to the snowy plains surrounding them and the place she had called home for the past year and a half. “I won’t forget you, not for eternity. I’ll look for you in the next life, and in the life after that. I’ll wait for you. And when I finally find you, we’ll be happy. For as long as we have. Until the end of time.”

“A little wooden cottage in the middle of the woods. Steam rising from a chimney in the back. Pink flowers and the greenest grass, all around. An eternally clear blue sky.”
“That’s right.” She turned to him and smiled, pulling him in for one last hug.
As they held each other, she could hear him exhaling shakily.
“Don’t come after me, okay?” she whispered, nuzzling her face in his neck, breathing in so she wouldn’t forget any part of this last moment. “You have people to protect now.”
“What if you’re in trouble?”
“I’ll be okay. Take care of yourself first.”
“Can you tell me where you’re going, at least?”
She let go and gave him one last kiss before stepping back. There was a smile on her face. “Everywhere. I’m going to save as many people as I can. I’m going to save the world and defy the Earth Mother. I’m going to prove Her wrong.”
Theo chuckled affectionately, watching her with glassy eyes. “Sounds like something only you could do.”
Averting her gaze, because it hurt too much to see him cry without being able to comfort him, she took another step back. And then another, and another, before taking one last look. “I love you, Theodore val’ne Emrys. I’ll see you later.”
He nodded, waving weakly.
She waved back, the crystalline-blue ring on her left hand reflecting the sun, shining as bright as the eternally clear blue sky in her dreams.
And before she could let him see the tears from her own eyes fall, she turned around and started walking to the gate she had once abhorred so much, each step harder than anything else she had had to do before, more painful than any injury.
When she was ten steps past the gate, thinking that this really was the end, there was suddenly a voice.
“Ty!”
She turned back and saw Theo standing by the gate.
“I’ll look forward to the day we meet again!” he cried. “I know we will!”
Smiling through a face full of tears, Ty nodded and waved goodbye before finally turning around one last time. Choosing to continue down the path that no one else could, the path that she had paved for herself. The path that not even a god could stop.
And then she was gone.
