  Chapter 26: Revelations and Shadows**

  #### **Part I: Nina's Story**

The morning brought with it a heavy atmosphere in Neversand. In the castle chambers, Nina found Gotier sitting alone in the library, studying maps of the city with a grim expression. She approached in silence, noticing the lines of tension on his face.

"Gotier," she said, softly, "we need to talk."

He looked up, seeing something in Nina's expression that made him close the maps and give her his full attention.

"There are things about me you need to know," Nina continued, sitting in a nearby chair. "Things that explain why the government kept me imprisoned, why my situation is more complicated than it seems."

Gotier nodded, waiting. Nina took a deep breath before she began.

"I have healing abilities, Gotier. Not just common medical knowledge, but true magical abilities that I have been honing for years. But that's not why they kept me prisoner."

She stood up, walking to the window that overlooked the city.

"My parents were named Kura and Fabricio," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "They were doctors, but not ordinary doctors. They used both traditional medicine and healing magic to help the people of Neversand and the poor cities of Pangea."

  Gotier leaned forward, interested.

"They had no money, they didn't charge for their services," Nina continued. "My parents just wanted to save people. They traveled to abandoned villages, cities devastated by poverty, places where no one else cared to go."

She turned to face Gotier, tears shining in her eyes.

"Over time, their names became famous throughout Pangea. Kura and Fabricio became symbols of hope, especially in regions that the Leper King had abandoned or that did not serve his purposes. They represented everything he hated: compassion without political gain, healing without control."

"And that made them targets," Gotier murmured, understanding.

"Exactly," Nina confirmed. "The Leper King could not allow symbols of hope to exist outside of his control. He ordered the Skull group to kill my parents. But that wasn't all: he also had the Neversand councilors who supported my parents eliminated, weakening the country politically so he could dominate Neversand more easily."

Gotier felt a chill. Skull. The same group that was now coming after Yuzuki.

"I survived by pure luck," Nina said, a sad smile crossing her face. "Soken was my childhood friend. When we were seven, he climbed up to my room in the castle and called me to come out. He said he wanted to show me something."

She laughed softly, lost in the memory.

"We played in the water, far from the kingdom, in fields with tall grass, with birds and dogs running around us. It was a perfect, innocent day. If Soken hadn't shown up that day, if he hadn't taken me away from the castle, I would be dead. Because it was on that day that the castle of Neversand was invaded and my parents were murdered."

Gotier watched Nina's expression, seeing an old pain mixed with gratitude.

"Since that day, I have been training in healing magic," she said, determination in her voice. "I will never abandon my family's goals. What makes us unique is our will to follow those we love, and I show my love for my parents by healing the people they cared so much about: the poor, the forgotten, the abandoned."

She approached Gotier, her eyes shining with intensity.

"Soken has always been different from everyone, Gotier. He is blind, but he is strong, fast, and his wounds heal faster than a normal human's. I always knew he was someone special, just like me. That's why we always got along."

Nina paused, her cheeks flushing slightly.

"That's why I love Soken," she said, simply. "Not just for what he did for me when we were children, but for who he is. For his strength, his kindness, his ability to see beauty even in the darkness."

Gotier smiled, touched by Nina's sincerity. But then he noticed something that confused him: even when talking about such deep tragedies, Nina could smile.

"Nina," he said, "how can you smile after everything you've been through? After losing your parents so brutally?"

Nina looked at him with an expression that mixed wisdom and sadness.

"Because I learned that carrying only pain does not honor those we have lost," she replied. "My parents lived to bring joy and healing to the world. If I live only in darkness, I will be betraying everything they died for."

  #### **Part II: The Dark Revelation**

Nina's smile faded, replaced by a more serious expression.

"But there's something else you need to know, Gotier. Something about Yuzuki."

Gotier felt his stomach clench. There was something in Nina's tone that alerted him.

"Yuzuki is a monster," Nina said, directly. "I know that, and you should know it too."

"What do you mean?" Gotier asked, though part of him already suspected.

"A month ago, a man named Stallo was captured," Nina said, her voice becoming colder. "He was tortured and killed by Yuzuki. But it wasn't just Stallo: his entire family was tortured and killed too. His wife and his two sons, both adults."

Gotier took a step back, shocked.

  "That... that can't be true."

"It is true," Nina confirmed. "I saw the bodies, Gotier. I saw what Yuzuki is capable of when he decides someone is an obstacle."

Gotier's mind went back to his conversation with Aygon, remembering the man's mutilated face, the daughter held hostage. Now, it made a terrible kind of sense.

"No," Gotier murmured, turning to leave quickly. "I need to talk to Yuzuki. I need to..."

"NO!" Nina shouted, her voice echoing through the library.

Gotier stopped, surprised by the intensity of her reaction.

"Listen to me," Nina said, approaching him. "We need Yuzuki. Neversand has always been a good city, of good people who helped everyone. But where are my parents now? Where are the people who went against the regime? In the cemetery, Gotier. All dead."

She grabbed his arm, forcing him to look into her eyes.

"Stallo's family had informants, power, and money. They controlled the low quarters and did everything the Leper King commanded. They were part of the problem, not the solution."

"That doesn't justify torturing an entire family!" Gotier exploded.

"No," Nina agreed. "It doesn't. Yuzuki is a monster, I don't deny that. But he is a monster who has changed this city. He helped us, even being what he is."

She let go of his arm, her expression becoming even more intense.

"If I had to choose between my life and Yuzuki's, I would choose mine," she said with brutal honesty. "But if I had to choose between Yuzuki and the Leper King, between Yuzuki and the system that killed my parents, I would choose Yuzuki without hesitation."

Gotier looked at her, his eyes wide with concern. He fixed his gaze on Nina's eyes, trying to understand if she really believed what she was saying.

"Nina," he said, slowly, "do you realize what you're saying? You're defending a man who tortures entire families."

"I'm defending the man who saved this city," Nina replied. "I'm defending the man who gave hope to the people my parents loved."

Gotier studied her face, a terrible question forming in his mind.

"Nina," he said, "do you think Yuzuki is being manipulated by that Kugutsu of his, by Mao? Or do you think he has always been like this?"

The question hung in the air between them like a blade. Nina hesitated, and in that hesitation, Gotier saw her answer.

"I don't know," she admitted finally. "And that's the scariest part of all this."

  #### **Part III: Yuzuki's Internal Struggle**

While Nina and Gotier talked in the library, Yuzuki was lying on his bed, staring intently at the wooden ceiling. His mind wandered far, lost in dark thoughts he could not shake. Mao's thick, ironic voice clung to his mind like a leech, while Amok desperately tried to block the evil presence.

  — *Let him speak this time, Amok* — Yuzuki said mentally.

  — *Yuzuki, this is not wise* — Amok protested. — *Mao only wants to cause pain.*

  — *Let him speak* — Yuzuki repeated, his mental voice laden with a dark resignation.

Mao gave a laugh of desire and pleasure, as if that moment were something his body fed on.

  — **Kanji** — Mao said, his voice echoing with malicious satisfaction —, **over time you are becoming someone I so wanted. You fought and fought against me, but in the end you tortured and killed that entire family.**

Yuzuki closed his eyes, but the images came anyway—Stallo screaming, his wife begging, the sons...

  — **I saw your smile when Stallo screamed** — Mao continued, his voice becoming more intense. — **You almost had an erection, didn't you? You liked it, Yuzuki! Don't lie to me!**

"Stop," Yuzuki whispered, but his voice had no strength.

  — **Isabela died** — Mao shouted, making it clear that Yuzuki was a monster like him. — **The blacksmith died, your brother died, your father and mother too. The city of Salem was decimated twice because of you. You control and manipulate Akari, and Gotier hasn't even come close to his revenge. I think I know why...**

Yuzuki's body trembled as he saw images of people dying in Salem, in Chagas, on Kugutsu Island, and everywhere else. He knew that wherever he went, the rotten smell of death followed him. His hand gripped the sheet so tightly that his knuckles turned white, and then blood began to seep from his clenched fist.

  — *Amok* — Yuzuki said —, *block him.*

Amok immediately silenced Mao, but not before asking a concerned question.

  — *Yuzuki, why do you still listen to him? Do you like to suffer? Is it some kind of masochism?*

Yuzuki calmed down and took a deep breath, wiping the blood from his hand.

"It's to remember what a monster I am," he replied, his eyes fixed on the wall. "And that I'm no better than him in any way."

  — *Why did you make the pact?* — Amok asked. — *Why don't you use his power? And in what way is Mao useful?*

Yuzuki remained silent for a long moment before answering.

"I just need to get to the golden tree and everything will be resolved."

He looked at the window, where the cold dawn was beginning to break. And then something extraordinary happened: the glow and particles of light from the golden tree merged with that dark dawn, giving light to Neversand. The golden light filtered through the window, bathing Yuzuki's face in a warm, comforting glow. For a moment, just for a moment, the darkness in his soul seemed to recede.

"Maybe," he murmured to himself, "there is still hope."

  #### **Part IV: Evolution of Powers**

In the training fields behind the castle, an extraordinary transformation was taking place. Soken and Kaien had spent three days in intensive meditation and training, and the results were beyond anything anyone could have imagined.

"Focus on the connection," Yuzuki instructed, watching from a safe distance. "Let the energy flow between you."

Soken was sitting in a meditative position, his hands touching Kaien's black scales. A golden aura shone around both of them, pulsing in a rhythm that resembled a beating heart.

"I can feel everything," Soken murmured, awe in his voice. "Your strength, your memories, your ancestral essence."

  — *And I can feel your determination* — Kaien replied, his mental voice filled with reverence. — *Your courage, your kindness. It is as if we are two aspects of the same soul.*

Yuzuki watched as something incredible happened. Spiritual energy flowed between Soken and Kaien like a golden current, transferring not just information, but real power.

"Try to lift that rock," Yuzuki said, pointing to a stone that easily weighed a thousand kilograms.

Soken approached the stone, still mentally connected with Kaien. When he placed his hands on the rock, the dragon's strength flowed through him. With surprising ease, he lifted the stone above his head as if it were made of paper.

"Incredible," Akari whispered, who had come to watch the training.

  "Test your vision," Zeke suggested.

Soken closed his eyes and concentrated. When he opened them again, they shone with a soft golden light.

"I can see," he said, awe in his voice. "Not just see, I can see details more than a kilometer away. I can see the life energy of people, I can see..."

He stopped, his expression changing to one of alarm.

"There are strange presences in the city," he said. "Two very powerful presences that shouldn't be here."

But it was Kaien who truly surprised everyone. During the training, the Tailax had learned to emanate a green energy throughout its body. The energy formed whirlpools that looked like flames, but green and much more intense.

"Kaien," Yuzuki said, "try to channel that energy."

The dragon concentrated, and its speed increased dramatically. It flew in circles around the training field so quickly that it looked like a black blur against the sky. Its strength had also increased: when it landed, its claws left deep marks in the solid stone. But it was when it tried to roar that something truly spectacular happened. Kaien felt his throat begin to itch and heat up. When he opened his mouth and shouted, a whirlwind of green fire spread across the sky as if a bomb had exploded.

"Fire," Soken whispered, awe in his voice. "Kaien is breathing fire."

The fire was not ordinary: it was green like the energy emanating from the dragon and burned with an intensity that made the surrounding air tremble.

"In three days," Yuzuki said, barely able to believe what he was seeing, "you have developed a connection and powers that should take years to achieve."

Soken smiled, still mentally connected with Kaien.

"It's because we are of the same blood," he said. "The Dragon Clan and the Tailax were made to work together. This is our true nature."

Kaien roared again, this time controlling the fire to form complex patterns in the air—ancient symbols that seemed to tell a story.

"We are ready," Soken said, determination in his voice. "For whatever is coming, we are ready."

  #### **Part V: Convergence of Threats**

While Soken and Kaien trained, and Nina revealed her secrets to Gotier, the threats approaching Neversand continued to converge. In the tavern in the Low Quarter, Minamino and Dare watched the city with trained eyes. They had spent days studying movement patterns, identifying weak points, mapping escape routes.

"Their preparations are impressive," Dare observed, his deep voice echoing from within his hood. "For ordinary people, they have organized themselves remarkably well."

"But they are still just ordinary people," Minamino replied, his silver eyes shining. "They prepare for soldiers, perhaps for Kanjis. They are not prepared for us."

Dare adjusted his imposing posture, his two-meter height making the tavern chair look like a toy.

"I have detected at least three powerful presences in the city," he said. "Yuzuki, obviously. But there are two others: a young man with draconic energy and a woman with healing power."

"Interesting," Minamino murmured. "Perhaps this mission will be more complex than we thought."

They were interrupted by a man who entered the tavern—a traveler with dusty clothes and nervous eyes.

"Have you heard the news?" he asked the innkeeper. "Skull is on the move. Taida and his group were seen just two days away."

Minamino and Dare exchanged significant glances.

"Skull," Dare murmured. "The Leper King's mercenaries."

"This complicates things," Minamino said. "If Skull arrives first..."

"Then we will have to accelerate our plans," Dare completed.

Meanwhile, in the tunnels under the city, Akari and Zeke continued their explorations. They found more secret chambers, more ancient libraries, and more evidence of the rich history of the Dragon Clan in Neversand.

"Look at this," Zeke said, holding an ancient scroll. "It's a map of the city's ancient defenses. There are secret passages connecting all the strategic points."

"And this," Akari said, pointing to runes carved on the wall, "seems to be some kind of warning system. If I'm reading it correctly, these runes can detect hostile presences."

They were interrupted by a sudden glow from the runes. The ancient marks began to pulse with a faint golden light.

"They're activating," Akari whispered. "Something is happening."

Above them, in the city, Soken abruptly stopped his training.

"Yuzuki," he said, urgency in his voice, "the presences I detected... they are moving. And there are more coming."

Yuzuki looked at the horizon, where he could see the dust being raised by approaching horsemen.

  "How many?" he asked.

"Hard to say," Soken replied, concentrating. "But there are many. And they are not coming in peace."

  #### **Part VI: The Weight of Choices**

In the castle library, the conversation between Nina and Gotier had reached a critical point. Gotier was processing everything he had learned—about Nina, about Yuzuki, about the impossible choices they all faced.

"Gotier," Nina said, softly, "I know this is hard to accept. I know Yuzuki has done terrible things. But look around."

She gestured toward the window, where they could see the city stretching out below them.

"See the people in the streets. See how they work together, how they have hope. That didn't exist before Yuzuki arrived. This city was dying, and now it's alive."

Gotier followed her gaze, seeing citizens organizing defenses, sharing resources, caring for one another.

"But at what cost?" he asked, his voice filled with pain. "How many families like Stallo's had to die for this to be possible?"

"I don't know," Nina admitted. "And that's a question that haunts me every night."

Gotier turned to face her, and Nina saw something in his eyes that made her step back slightly.

"Nina," he said, his voice low and dangerous, "do you know what I did before I met Yuzuki?"

  She shook her head.

"I killed three hundred thousand people," he said, simply. "Men, women, children. I sacrificed them to save my own family."

  Nina paled.

"I know what it's like to be a monster," Gotier continued. "I know what it's like to make impossible choices. And I know what it's like to live with the consequences."

He approached her, and Nina could see tears shining in his eyes.

"My daughter, Mila, was the age of some of the children I killed," he said. "My wife, Lili, was as innocent as the women I sacrificed. And I loved them so much that I was willing to destroy the world to save them."

"Gotier..." Nina began, but he interrupted her.

"Yuzuki is doing the same thing I did," he said. "He is sacrificing innocents for a greater good. And maybe he's right. Maybe it's necessary. But that doesn't make him any less monstrous."

He turned away from her, looking out the window.

"The difference is that I lost my family anyway," he said. "All my sacrifices were in vain. And now I see Yuzuki repeating the same mistakes, using the same justifications."

"So what are you going to do?" Nina asked.

Gotier remained silent for a long moment.

"I'm going to confront him," he said finally. "Not to stop him, necessarily. But to make sure he understands what he is becoming."

At that moment, the library door opened and Yuzuki entered, his expression serious.

"Nina, Gotier," he said, "we need to talk. There are threats approaching the city, and..."

He stopped when he saw the expressions on their faces.

  "What happened here?" he asked.

Gotier turned to face him, and Yuzuki saw something in his eyes that made him instinctively place his hand on the hilt of his sword.

"Yuzuki," Gotier said, his voice calm but filled with a contained emotion, "we need to have a talk about Aygon's daughter."

The tension in the room became palpable. Nina looked between the two men, realizing that something fundamental was about to change.

"And about Stallo's family," Gotier added, taking a step toward Yuzuki.

Yuzuki did not back down, but his expression hardened.

"Gotier," he said, "this is not the time for..."

"This is exactly the time," Gotier interrupted, his voice rising. "Because if we don't talk about this now, if we don't confront what you are becoming, then when?"

The golden light of the golden tree filtered through the window, bathing the three of them in an ethereal glow. But not even that light could dispel the darkness growing between them.

"You want to know what I think, Yuzuki?" Gotier said, his voice trembling with emotion. "I think you are becoming exactly the kind of monster we came here to defeat."

The silence that followed was absolute. Nina held her breath, Yuzuki remained motionless, and Gotier waited for an answer that could determine the fate of them all. Outside the window, the city of Neversand continued its preparations for the war it knew was coming. But inside the castle library, a different war was about to begin—a war between allies, between friends, between different visions of what it meant to be a hero.

And when that war was over, nothing would be the same.
