Just For Today

"How are you here?" Kim asked at the sidewalk.

?"Thomas drove me," Sarah answered, matter-of-factly.

?"Maybe it's better to ask why are you here?"

?Macy's face was twisting with concern as she looked between them. "We have to check in on my friend," she told Sarah, dismissing the mystery for later.

?Sarah nodded. Fiercely loyal, she didn't need to be told why. "He's gonna be okay, I promise. I saved him!"

?Kim looked at her quizzically but decided to follow Macy.

?"Let's talk after," she told Sarah.

?Macy was already banging at the door.

?"Oh, that won't work," Sarah said. "He's very upset and his mother is terribly lazy."

?Macy turned back and started banging harder. "Ms. Thompson!" she screamed. "It's Macy!"

?Sarah walked up to the door. "You know I can get in!" She didn't yell. She just spoke loudly. Something in the air changed when she did—a vibration that went right through the wood. Kim felt it in her teeth.

?But it was Macy who took a step back.

?The lock clicked and the door opened. Sarah looked at Macy. "Sorry. It's okay, I would never hurt a friend of Kim's."

?Macy just charged into the house, right past Adam's Mom, who looked dazed. Then she ran up to Adam's room. When she opened the door, he was sitting in his recliner. He had a bed but rarely used it. His headphones were on and the lights were off.

?Macy sat on his lap and pulled his head onto her shoulder. "I'm sorry. I don't know what happened."

?"Thomas says it will pass," Sarah said from the doorway.

?"Alright, Mini-Kim, I'm gonna need a bit more than that."

?Sarah took a second to figure out if she was being insulted or not. "A Wendigo charmed him. It messes up a human's brain."

?"Can you translate?" She asked Kim, whose look betrayed the fact that she was just as perplexed.

?Thomas entered the room, Jill right behind him. The small bedroom suddenly felt very crowded.

?"I think we can help," Thomas said, his voice calm and authoritative. "But maybe we should adjourn to somewhere less cramped." He looked at the worry in Macy's eyes. "He will be okay. In fact, if you can convince him to join us, it would be good for him to get out."

?"Hey buddy." Macy cupped his face in her hands. "Come with me."

?Jill leaned against the doorframe, eyeing Thomas warily. "Is that your boyfriend?" she asked Macy.

?"Maybe just for today," Macy answered, pulling Adam to his feet.
