Chapter 51 - First product from animal skin

“He-he-he made a hole!” Someone from the group exclaimed.

But looking at the punctured skin, the new hole is insignificant.

“Shhhhh let’s observe.” Vel is quieting the crowd as it starts to get noisy.

The crowd went quiet and tried to watch what Civ is doing.

Civ started puncturing the skin around the big hole using the pointed bone with a thread at the end.

Every time the pointed bone passes through, the thread follows. He punctured the other side of the skin. The following threads start forming a star shape.

After doing this twice, Civ pulled the thread.

  SHHHHOSHH

The big hole was closed by the thread.

“Ohhhh the hole was closed!” Everyone cannot contain their astonishment as they discover something unexplainable.

But Arsh and Vel, who quietly observe Civ, understand the process. Since they are the ones who helped Civ make those pointed bones.

“You can close a hole using that small bone?” Arsh was surprised by this discovery.

Kivrah was also surprised. With this, he has an idea of what items they can create.

The tribe leader smiled. “My Son. You can’t fail to surprise me every day.”

The crowd also starts to understand what Civ did, so they are more surprised.

When the noise died down, Vel immediately asked Civ.

“Civ, what can we make on this skin?”

The hunting group went silent. They also want to know why Civ made this big of an effort to make this item.

“Since you asked about it Vel. Come and help me.” Civ smiled and started picking up the tools he needed.

Vel happily walked towards Civ and waited for instructions.

Before they do anything. Civ stood up with a cordage in his hand. He walked towards Luk and asked.

“Show me your right forearm,” Civ asked Luk.

With a delay, Luk awkwardly lifts his forearm. But without a word, Civ starts placing the thread around his wrist and elbow. Then placed the thread from his wrist to his elbow. Every time he places the thread in Luk’s forearm, he ties a knot in it afterward.

Everyone wants to question Civ. But they don’t know what question to ask.

Civ returned to Vel. He grabbed the animal skin. Then placed a section of this skin and laid it flat on a flat stone.

“Hold this flat and make sure this will not move,” Civ commanded.

Vel quietly nodded and pressed his palms into the skin.

Then, Civ holds his stone knife. Using the thread he used with Luk earlier, he started tracing the thread based on the knot. He put a small pressure, marking the animal's skin.

When he was finished, he started cutting the skin. Tracing the marks. When he finished cutting the skin, a rectangular shape with round edges was made.

The next thing he did was use the bigger, pointy bone. He punctured the edges, making holes. He was able to make four holes on each side. He rolled the animal skin, making the holes next to each other.

Then, using a thicker thread, he put it inside the holes. Like tying a shoe.

“This looks good. Luk! Come here!” Civ commanded.

Luk quickly stood up and walked towards Civ.

“Show me your forearm where you hold the bow.” Civ continued.

Luk showed his left forearm. Looking at his left forearm, a faint blue bruise is starting to appear.

Civ put the rolled skin on Luk’s left forearm. Placing the side of the skin where the thread is to the outside. Then Civ tightens the thread like tightening a shoe.

“It fits perfectly! Luk, try to shoot an arrow again.” Civ asked Luk.

Luk nodded and picked up his bow and arrow.

He aimed and stretched his bow. Then -

  TSUN

  The arrow hit the tree.

“This feels amazing Civ. I don’t feel a pain in my left arm!” Luk's eyes were sparkling. Seeing that there is now a hint of pain in his left arm, he felt more confident in using the bow and arrows.

Realizing this made everyone want a piece also.

Civ smiled when he noticed the reaction from the crowd.

While everyone is practicing the bow and arrow. He observed that most of the group stops using it after a few shots. Not because they do not like using it, but because of what is called a “string slap”. This made some in the group not have good accuracy since they wanted to avoid the string slap. Some of them do not stretch the bow to its full potential because of this.

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

So having this kind of protection will protect them from the string-slap. Thus, they will practice more with the bow and arrow.

The rest of the hunting group requested to have this created. But Arsh called Civ and asked.

“Tell me Civ, how can we make this?” Arsh was willing to learn how to make it. Thinking that she can pass it to the cordage team.

Knowing the idea Arsh is planning, Civ nodded.

But before he can speak, Kivrah pops out from his right side and asks.

“This is all amazing Civ. What should we call these items?”

“Oh right. Let’s name it one by one.” Civ picks the animal skin.

  “We can call this leather!”

“Leather, that is a nice name.” Kivrah nodded.

“This pointy bones Father, we can call it bone needle!”

“Needle, that is a name that is easy to remember.” Kivrah picked one of the bone needles and inspected it.

“The one I created for Luk, let’s call it an arm bracer!” Civ explained.

“Bracer, mmmm I will remember it.” Kivrah looked at Luk’s left forearm, where the bracer was attached.

‘I will need this also.’ Kivrah wants to ask Civ but-

“I will make an arm bracer for the two of us Father. Once I finish making it, I will give it to you.” Civ smiled.

“Thank you my Son.” Kivrah was excited.

Since Kivrah will be busy today, he excuses himself and leaves the hunting group.

Meanwhile, the hunting group started making their own bracers.

Following the instructions from Civ, they were able to make it within 30 minutes.

Now, all of the hunting group knows how to make it.

“This looks amazing Civ!” Yan exclaimed.

“You are right. Since all of you have bracers, you look more like hunters.” Civ praised the group.

Wide smiles appeared from the hunting group.

“Alright, you can try to check if you can hit the arrows better now,” Civ instructed them

With an unrestrained grin, the group swiftly finds their positions.

With a stretch of a string.

  TSUN

  TSUN

  TSUN

The arrows hit their target trees.

“Whoaaah!” The group felt a feeling they had not felt in a long time. The ability to shoot an arrow with all of their might and avoid pain. It was one of the greatest feelings they had.

“Now that we will not be in pain, we can practice bow and arrow for a longer time!” Ras commented.

Everyone nodded with a grin on their faces.

Looking at the relaxed faces of his group, Civ sighed in his mind.

‘This will is really a big help for the group.’

Civ let the group leave to start their day and duties.

Everyone left. But Civ noticed that Vel and Arsh stayed.

“Civ, we still have this big of a boar skin. What do you plan on making?” Arsh asked.

“This? We can still make many things with this.” Civ caressed his chin.

‘There are countless items we can make. But let's start with important things first.’

Civ started marking in the leather with his stone knife. The shape is like a droplet, but with a longer tail.

Then, after cutting it, he used it to make a new one and another one. Having three of them now, he handed the two to Vel and Arsh.

“Try it. Mark the leathers on your side.” Civ instructed them.

They gladly tried since they wanted to help Civ.

Arsh and Vel were able to mark it without issues and handed the cut leather to Civ.

  This makes it three pairs.

“Use this big bone needle. Puncture a hole on the side, except in the tail end.” Civ put the cut leather side by side and aligned them. Then he started puncturing the side of the leather, but making sure there is a quarter inch of a margin from the edge.

Vel and Arsh diligently followed it.

“Thank you Arsh, Vel. We need the cordage with black glue. Vel, please get some thicker cordages and the black glue in the cave. We’ll make a fire here. Oh, before I forget. Please bring the rabbit skins.” Civ instructed.

Vel quickly went to the cave to gather the materials. At the same time, Civ went to the campfire near the cave and got some firewood with an ember on it.

Civ made a fire while waiting with Vel. Arsh, on the other hand, was asked by Civ to make a bracer for his Father.

When Vel arrived, everything was already set.

Civ grabs the pine pitch and warms next to the fire.

After the black glue liquefied, Civ put a bundle of the thick cordage that Vel brought.

He makes sure that all of it is fully submerged inside the bowl.

Then, after a few seconds, he removed it from the black glue and dried it in the sun. He made three batches of cordage with black glue. Within 15 minutes, the cordage was dry.

Seeing the dried cordages, Vel asked. “Why do you need to submerge it in black glue?”

Civ handed them their cordages and mysteriously smiled. “We need it to make sure that there will be no leaks!”

  “No leaks?” Arsh also asked.

“Hehehe follow what I will do.” Civ sat down. Get a thicker needle, then start threading the bone needle. He also threaded a needle at the other end of the cordage.

The two of them followed Civ. They had difficulty threading it for a few tries. But they were able to put a thread in the eye of the needle.

Looking at the two, Civ was happy that they were learning fast with this process.

Then he picked up the leather he had cut. The clip is using his hand.

With the third bone needle, he punched a hole all the way to the other side of the leather.

Then he passes through the needle with a thread from that punched hole.

Finding the middle of the thread, Civ punched a new hole next to it based on the marking they created earlier. Then make a loop around the two holes.

After that, he started sewing the leather. Punch a hole, the left needle passes through the right, and the right needle passes through to the left. Using the saddle stitch technique, he sewed the leather all the way to the last marked hole.

Vel and Arsh stuck their eyes on what Civ is doing without blinking. So far, they understand the process. They were able to replicate the saddle stitch technique.

They also started sewing their leather until they finished.

“Nice, this should be good to test. Let’s go to the cave.” Civ stood up and brought his leather.

At the cave, Civ starts collecting some cordage.

“Cordage? Are you going to tie it?” Arsh curiously asked.

“Almost, but right now, stuff your sewn leather with cordages. Make sure you its fully filled. Use a stick if you feel it's not fully stuffed.” Arsh and Vel nodded and started filling the sewn leather.

“Civ, why do we need to fill it with cordage? Where do we need to use it?” Vel has an idea, but he cannot fully explain it to himself.

“We don’t need to use it yet. We just need to make sure that the leather has its shape. Like making a jar made of mud!” Civ explained.

“But Civ, why are we shaping it?” Arsh asked.

Civ wants to tell him what their plan is. But before he said something, Safi and Kivrah popped in his side.

Kivrah’s face was solemn while Safi looked listless.

“Civ, I think we need to check the north.” Kivrah's voice was low, but it carried weight in every word.

Hearing this, Civ stopped stuffing his sewn leather.

“Why? What happened?” Civ was busy with Arsh and Vel for almost two hours. So he doesn’t have an idea what is happening.

Safi replied with a trembling voice.

“I-i-i-i don’t hear the steps from the boar. Even the birds!”
