Chapter 15 - Meeting the recruits

The campfire still has its embers and smoke. Even the tribe leader slept by the campfire. Just outside of the camp, Horm was sleeping comfortably in a fetal position.

“Hey, Horm! Wake up!” Civ shakes Horm, who is still smiling while dreaming.

“Civ that guy will not wake up.” Behind Civ, Arsh just woke up and walked towards them.

“What happened here? How have all of our tribesmen slept here?” Civ was visibly confused.

Arsh, even though she is still sleepy, tries her best to explain what happened when Civ slept in the camp.

Horm was repeatedly asked to re-enact the hunting of the boar from both his and Civ’s perspective. He happily obliged, and he re-enacted it many times in front of the campfire.

That was the first time the tribe was able to enjoy without any worries for tomorrow.

The tribe was lively that night. Horm, Arsh, and Tribe Leader Kivrah went to sleep when everyone slept.

Hearing the discussion from Civ and Arsh, their tribesmen started to wake up. Their faces were bright and refreshed. They start going back to their huts.

The tribe leader goes towards Civ, smiling. “Civ, how was your sleep?”

Civ was caught off guard by the question from his Father. “I slept well last night Father.”

“Great! I was also able to sleep comfortably last night.” Kivrah was satisfied with the sleep he had gotten.

“My son, with the warm feeling coming from the fire, the night seems not cold,” Kivrah added.

Looking around, Civ also noticed that the atmosphere around was vibrant.

“I wish we could have that campfire inside the cave.” Kivrah was hopeful, but he had a hunch it was not doable.

Sleeping in a warm place on a cold night is one of the best nights and sleeps they have gotten all their life.

Civ seeing his father, was looking forward to having a campfire, which made him think.

‘Having a campfire inside that small cave is not possible.’

Aside from smoke inhalation, which they might experience. The embers from the fire might burn his tools, especially the sticks he stored there for future use.

Once each team is able to produce the tools needed. He can move on to improving the sleeping conditions of our people.

So many things to accomplish yet so little time. A time for himself might be short. But one of the ways to add more time is to entrust it to his tribesmen so they can accomplish more.

  Stick to the plan.

As Civ looked back at Horm, he was scared. Horm's face was swollen and red.

“What happened to you?” Civ asked.

  “Well -”

“He was not waking up, so I slapped him until he woke up!” Arsh angrily replied.

Knowing that they are now tasked as the hunting team of the tribe, Arsh wants to discipline Horm.

“Ehem, anyways, let's go prepare our tools and call our tribesmen who will follow us to hunt.” The trio prepares and brings the spears and tools.

The new recruits were already idly waiting for them at the back of the cave, and Civ was quite surprised.

“I already called them earlier,” Arsh mentioned, since Civ was going to ask them.

Arsh had already instructed the new recruits of the hunting team to wait for them at the back of the cave. The new recruits respectfully followed Arsh, even with the age gap. For them, killing a boar with your own hand is worthy of respect. Whatever age you are.

The new recruit's eyes were sparkling. Their gaze is filled with anticipation as the trio prepares the tools.

Civ nodded and said, “Thank you for coming and listening to Arsh regardless of our ages.”

“Before anything else, I want everyone to introduce themselves.”

Everyone was shy and said their names only. Civ observed their confidence, but that is something he can try to cultivate.

The three males’ names were: Ras, Lowi, and Pil

The two women's names were: Veni, Kes

The teenage boy and girl's names were: Luk, Safi

The atmosphere was lively and everyone was a bit comfortable with each other.

Murmurs started to fill the area while the recruits talked to each other.

Noticing the focus from them on the tools. Civ is also looking forward to teaching them.

“Listen, I know all of you want to hunt the boar. But first, I want to know if you are capable of hunting the boar.”

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

Hearing this phrase made them really ponder. They know how ferocious a wild boar can be. Even with these tools, they still need to be confident in bringing down a boar.

“First, I want you to run as fast as you can. I’ll also follow you along while you run.”

Their faces brightened as they had the honor to run with the Chosen One.

They lined up facing the cave. With a signal from Civ, everyone runs as fast as they can.

Everyone tried their best, but they were passed by Civ immediately. The new recruit’s speed is not that fast, but it still needs work.

But after a few seconds, the two teenagers were able to increase their speed.

Civ was delighted. Aside from him, they have two runners on the team.

The group returned to the starting point. Arsh was waiting for them there while sharpening the knives and spears.

The group has a couple of minutes to rest. They move on to familiarize themselves and learn how to use these tools.

Civ introduced the spear and atlatl first.

When they received the spear and atlatl, everyone received them with a delicate motion. Holding it carefully like it was a divine being.

“For the spear throwing, Arsh will teach you all how to use it.” Civ exchanged tasks with Arsh while he observed them.

Arsh demonstrates first how to use it.

  WHOOOOSSS

She already has enough experience in spear-throwing. Her technique has poise and elegance. Catching everyone's attention to learn how to do it.

The group started their training. Civ counted how many times they threw the spear. Based on his calculation, they have a 56% hit rate accuracy on a steady object.

‘This is a good start!’ He was expecting lower than 30% but with this percentage. They can try to split a group into two and hunt two boars at the same time in the future.

‘Let's take this thing on the side right now. What they need is experience.’

Skills will be useless if they are easily intimidated by the presence of a boar. What they need now is to feel the fear and conquer it. Once they are confident, he can confidently let them hunt by themselves.

The second one is the stone knife. Everyone carefully sees this tool. Knowing that this is the tool that ended the life of the boar, they want to see its capabilities.

Luk can't stop his curiosity and runs his pointy finger on this stone knife.

“Ouch!” Luk exclaimed, and he quickly sucked his finger.

“Why did you do that? Do you not remember this item killed the boar?” Safi teased his friend.

Luk was excited about using this tool. He was just trying to feel the edges of the stone knife, but he did not expect that it would be too sharp.

‘This is a tool that we need to use carefully,’ Luk said to himself.

The new recruits have the same sentiment while holding this stone knife.

On the other side, Arsh wants to reprimand Luk, but she holds herself back. Seeing the reaction from the recruits, the message has been delivered.

Civ stops finished sharpening the tools they need on the hunt. He stands up to address the team.

“Everyone, as you can see, we still need to learn how to use these tools.” Everyone agrees with Civ.

“We are going to hunt right now. If you want to familiarize yourself with the tools, you can stay here.”

On the first day, Civ does not want to bring in the recruits right away. Even though he wants them to see and experience how to hunt, it is better if they are proficient in the tools first.

The team agrees to stay here except for the two teenagers.

The two move forward and ask if they can follow them.

Civ and Arsh looked at each other. They did not expect that Luk and Safi would join the hunt.

“Luk and Safi, are you sure you want to join us in today’s hunt?” Civ wanted to confirm if they are just playing around.

But both Luk and Safi stood their ground and simultaneously said. “Yes, we would like to join the hunt”.

Their eyes were clear as day. Civ wanted to stop them. Honestly, they need more hands on the hunt.

“Alright, please prepare. Both of you will also bring the tools.”

“Yes, Oh Chosen one!” Luk and Safi replied.

“Civ, just call me Civ,” Civ replied.

  “Yes, Civ.”

Luk and Safi were excited about hunting the boar and prepared themselves.

Before they left the camp, Kivrah talked to them first. Since the team will hunt the boar, they have more time to do other things. Also, all of the huts for each family were already finished.

“My son, since I have free time now, I will learn more about spear throwing. Once I learn it, I’ll join the hunt with you.”

Civ was delighted, “Yes Father, please wait for us here.”

Kivrah nodded. “The Sun Goddess will bless you!”.

After that, they left and went north.

The sky is blue and the sun shines bright today. They decided to go first to the place where they found the two sows yesterday.

With the same hunting plan, Civ let the rest wait at the fallen log.

Walking to the area where the boars graze, Civ wondered if they could capture the piglets. But if they kill the mother, they might not be able to raise those piglets. I guess we can try to capture them if we can capture the mother.

Civ tried to simulate some scenarios in his head. But in the end, he concluded that they needed more resources and tools to make it happen.

‘Still, we can start with a small sample size.’ There are options, but they need to be ready.

When he arrived at the location, his heart skipped a beat. Instead of a piglet and a sow, what he saw was a big, hairy black boar grazing.

‘What happened yesterday? Why is there only one boar here?’ Civ expected that the sounder would still be there. They might move to another area.

When the boar turned around, he noticed that there was a scratch visible on the back of its neck.

‘Oh no! Not the boar for the last time.’

It was the boar from the last time. This boar was male and much bigger compared to the sow they hunted yesterday.

‘This hunt might be a challenging one.’

Civ thinks this might be a long run, but it is not impossible.

With a deep breath, Civ readied himself. With a stone in his hands, he threw it at the boar and ran to the south.

  REEEEE

The boar remembers the physique of Civ and ferociously chases him.

  THUD

  THUD

  THUD

When the boar stomps, Civ feels the ground tremble.

‘This is not good.’ Civ runs in circles first to gauge how fast this boar is.

‘Looks like his top speed is slower than mine. ' Able to measure the speed of the boar, he is more confident now to exhaust this boar.

They run in circles multiple times. Civ noticed that the speed of the boar slowed down.

“They should be able to hit this boar.” Civ runs toward the fallen log.

The boar's mouth is foaming, it is visibly exhausted, but the eyes are bloodshot. Wanting to kill Civ at any cost.

When he was around 50 yards.

“Everyone, throw your spears!” Civ runs to the left as the team quickly throws their spears using the atlatl

  BANG!

The boar crashed into the tree and stopped moving.
