Chapter 27

Meanwhile, back at Imperial City, its streets bustling with people, hover cars zipping through the air, and neon lights casting a kaleidoscope of colors across the skyline. It was a relaxing day off for the team, and they were determined to make the most of it. After weeks of training and their two missions, they finally had a chance to relax and just be teenagers.

The team walked down the main thoroughfare, their laugh- ter echoing through the crowded streets. Freddie was at the front, his arms spread wide as he took in the sights. He pointed to a massive holographic advertisement that filled the side of a skyscraper displaying a new line of hover bikes.

Luis grinned, nudging Luis beside him. “Think we could convince Kara to get us one of those?”

Leo rolled his eyes but couldn’t hide his smile. “Yeah, sure. And while we’re at it, let’s ask her for a private island or planet, too.”

Emma chuckled, her hands tucked into the pockets of her jacket. “I think we’re lucky she gave us the base, training, and equipment. Let’s not push it.”

Sophia walked a few steps behind the group, her usual reserved demeanor softened by the relaxed atmosphere. She glanced at Robert, who was walking beside her. “You’re quiet today,” she said, her voice low.

Robert shrugged, a small smile playing on his lips. “Just enjoying the moment.”

Freddie turned around, walking backward so he could face the group. “Okay, but seriously, what’s the plan? We can’t just walk around all day. We need to do something.”

Joel smirked, his hands in his pockets. “What did you have in mind, Freddie? Another one of your brilliant ideas?”

Freddie’s grin widened. “Glad you asked. I heard there’s a new arcade downtown. Holographic games, zero-gravity simulators, the works. What do you say?”

Leo’s eyes lit up. “Zero-gravity simulators? I’m in.”

Luis nodded. “Same. But if you beat me, Freddie, I’m blaming it on the simulator being rigged.”

Freddie laughed, throwing an arm around Luis’s shoulders. “Face it, man. I’m just better.”

The group made their way to the arcade, a massive building with flashing lights and a steady stream of people coming and going. Inside, the air was filled with the sounds of laughter, electronic music, and the hum of holographic displays. Freddie immediately dragged Luis and Leo toward the zero-gravity simulator, while Joel and Emma wandered off to try their hand at a holographic shooting range.

Robert and Sophia hung back, watching the others with amused smiles. “You’re not going to join them?” Sophia asked, raising an eyebrow.

Robert shrugged. “I’m good. Besides, someone has to make sure Freddie doesn’t break anything.” Sophia smirked. “Fair point.”

They found a quiet corner and sat down, watching the chaos unfold. Freddie and Luis were now in a heated competition on the zero-gravity simulator, their laughter echoing through the arcade. Leo was cheering them on, while Joel and Emma were locked in a fierce battle at the shooting range, their competitive sides fully on display.

After a while, Freddie stumbled over to Robert and Sophia, his face flushed with excitement. “You guys have to try this,” he said, gesturing to the simulator. “It’s insane!”

Robert raised an eyebrow. “Insane good or insane bad?”

Freddie grinned. “Insane awesome. Come on, don’t be boring.”

Sophia stood, brushing off her pants. “Fine. I guess you will taste defeat”

Freddie’s eyes widened. “Oh, you’re on”

The rest of the afternoon was spent in a blur of games, laughter, and friendly competition. By the time they left the arcade, the sun was setting, casting a warm golden glow over the city. The neon lights glimmered like stars as the team made their way back to the base, their laughter and chatter filling the cool night air. Freddie was recounting his “epic victory” at the zero-gravity simulator for what felt like the hundredth time, while Joel and Emma argued good-naturedly about who had actually won at the shooting range.

“I’m just saying,” Joel said, smirking, “if you were really as good as you claim, you wouldn’t have missed that last shot.” Emma rolled her eyes, but there was a playful glint in them. “Oh, please. You only won because the game glitched. Admit it.”

Leo and Luis walked a few steps ahead, their voices carrying as they debated the best strategy for the next time they went to the arcade. “If we team up,” Luis said, “we could totally take Freddie down. He’s not that good.”

“Says the guy who lost three times in a row,” Freddie shot back, grinning.

Sophia and Robert brought up the rear, their pace slower and more relaxed. Sophia glanced at Robert, her expression thoughtful. “It’s nice,” she said quietly. “Days like this. It reminds me why we’re doing all of this.”

Robert nodded, his gaze sweeping over the city skyline. “Yeah. It’s easy to forget sometimes, with all the training and missions. But this… this is what we’re fighting for.”

Luis turned around, walking backward again so he could face the group. “Okay, but seriously, when are we coming back? I need a rematch with Luis. I think he cheated.”

Freddie threw up his hands. “How do you even cheat at a zero-gravity simulator?”

“You’d find a way,” Luis said, grinning.

The team’s laughter echoed through the streets as they turned the corner toward the base. For a moment, everything felt perfect—like they were just a group of friends enjoying a night out in the city.

But high above, perched on the rooftop of a nearby building, Dexter Nyx watched them through the scope of his rifle. His eye flickered as she zoomed in on the team, tracking their movements with cold precision. His lips curled into a faint smile as he adjusted his aim, the crosshairs settling on them. “I’ve got the target in my sights,” he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. He lowered the rifle slightly, his finger hovering over the trigger. “They are moving.” The team, oblivious to the danger lurking in the shadows, continued their walk, their laughter fading into the night. Dexter watched them for a moment longer before slipping back into the darkness, his presence vanishing like a ghost.

The city lights shimmered, casting long shadows across the streets. Somewhere in the distance, a hover car sped by, its engine humming softly. But for the team, the night was still peaceful—a rare moment of calm before the storm.
