Jay finished looking over the options with a smile on his face. A few of those did actually sound interesting, but he could see an obvious frontrunner. He considered just picking the option, but decided to ask Lan anyway--though he was already sure she would agree.
So, what do you think?
“Unstoppable Force, though I'm positive you didn’t need to ask to know that's the one you should pick.”
Yeah, yeah, I know, but I still wanted to check. Do you think it would limit my combat abilities with the weapons I have?
“Nope, that is one of the nice things about classes. Once a skill is a class skill, it will always be a class skill. Even if this class focuses on punching things, your blade and firearm skills will still gain you levels towards Tier 3.”
Interesting, he thought as he selected “Unstoppable Force” from the list.

The change was almost immediately noticeable. It was like his body had turned into a coiled spring, ready to release at any moment.
Holy shit, he thought, enjoying the ease and speed with which his body now moved.
“And that's why you don’t want to fuck with someone who has a higher-tier class than you. Especially at these early levels.”
I didn’t think the stat buffs would be retroactive.
“Yeah, that’s what makes getting to Level 25, 50, 75, and 100 so powerful. Each threshold adds an extra upgrade point per level, including all the previous levels. So, at Level 25, you get 25 extra points instantly. 50 at 50, and so on. After 100, the increase doubles, so at Level 125, you gain 250 points.”

Wild. Good timing, though. I don’t think those things out there are gonna stand a chance. Jay pulled up his status, looking over all the gains he had just made. Especially not now.

He appreciated how much the screen had grown, but the thing was becoming a bit cumbersome to read through.
Is there any way I can make it smaller?
“Your status screen?”
Yeah.
“Kind of. You could separate things into folders so that every state wouldn’t show every time you opened it.”
How can I do that?
Lan spent several minutes directing him on how to create and move skills into folders. For now, though, Jay decided to just go with two.

Much better, he thought, closing the screen.
Jay smiled for a moment as he exited the tent, enjoying the ease with which he now moved. After how close yesterday’s fight had been. He originally wasn’t looking forward to this fight, but now he couldn’t wait for those things to swarm the wall once more. He was once again armed with a set of lightning weapons. However, this time he opted to take two of the knives with the hope he could kill two enemies per burst of Spirit Empowerment. He climbed up to his same perch on the wall, staring out over the ominous pyramid. Just a bit over an hour remained on his timer, and he could feel the anticipation building. He looked around, and his excitement faded slightly as he saw the people around him terrified. Several of them were heavily bandaged, and a few couldn’t stop shaking. His smile faded.
Do you think this is how it happened on their planet?
“Yeah. If they actually managed to survive the first day, this is probably what it looked like. Although I would guess a lot of them would have run, at this point. It wouldn’t have mattered, as they would have just been killed a few hours after the fort was overtaken, but I'm guessing the system kept them all here to give you a better chance.”
That’s… that's awful.
“It is. Just remember, though, these aren’t actual people, and you can’t save them.”
I know. Jay sighed.
It was a strange feeling. He was used to needing help, even if he refused to take it. Now, he could offer help himself, but it wouldn’t mean anything, would it? He would feel better, but at the end of the day, he couldn’t bring them out of whatever this was. It still didn’t sit right. For now, he needed to focus on survival. Breaking whatever rules this new reality had could come later.
The timer slowly counted down until it finally reached zero. A pulse rumbled out from the pyramid once more, and the horde once again poured towards the wall. Jay raised his weapon and opened fire. Bolts streaked across the field, each finding its target. He moved with speed he would have never thought possible before now. It was inhuman. Even people who had the best enhancements geared toward reaction speed and movement would have found themselves outmatched.
“These stats really are insane,” Jay muttered as he fired another bolt into the horde.
It wasn’t long before they once again reached the wall, but this time he wasn’t overrun as quickly. He held one section of the fortification on his own, firing until his weapon ran out before drawing the lightning daggers and lunging at the creatures. A grin spread across his face as he cut creature after creature down without even having to activate his buffing skill. Hours passed as the pile of bodies grew higher and higher. He couldn’t even see the pyramid anymore.
Spirit: 1383/1500
He was surprised to see his Spirit had barely even dropped. He had almost died yesterday, by comparison.
He laughed. Hey, Lan, you got anything I should practice while doing this?”
Her response took a few moments. “Yes, actually. I’m sending a manual over. See if you can get that skill to work.”
Jay received the packet and opened it in the corner of his view, but even if he was cutting the creatures down easily, he didn’t feel comfortable reading while fighting. He had a solution for that, though, as he activated his Boosting skill. In seconds, everything around him fell to the ground, dead. He quickly read over the manual for a skill called Investigate. It detailed another way to cycle Spirit through his eyes--like his Healing skill, but slightly different.
Huh. Is there any meaning behind these patterns?
Lan clapped. “Yes, there is, but for now, focus on that skill and the fight. I’ll tell you about it after.”
Sounds good.
As the final hour before the horde ended, it began. Jay finally got some results with the new skill.
**Skill level increased: Investigate 0 - 1**
Solinoid: #F1283940 - Level 13
This is a system-created entity.
What the... How does this skill work, Lan?
She sighed. “Did you not read the description?”
No, I was a bit preoccupied, so I just read the bit on how to do it.
“It’s a skill that lets you see the name, level, and a brief description of whatever you look at while using it.”
Wait, does it give the leaderboard name, or the actual name?
“Leaderboard name. If you’re worried about someone using it on you and discovering your identity, you should be. That’s another good thing about that Obscuration skill I taught you. If you're using it and someone with a higher level of Investigate than your Obscuration tries to look at you, they still won’t get any information.”
Huh, is there any way I can lessen the Spirit cost so I can constantly keep that up?
“Sadly, no. You will be able to, eventually, but for now, you're just gonna have to know when to use it. The nice thing about that is Investigate is not a stealthy skill. It kinda feels like someone is staring at you in plain sight while you are naked. It's unpleasant, but it will give you enough of a warning to activate your skill.”
That is nice. Thanks, Lan.
“Don’t mention it. Or do. You don’t thank me nearly enough.”
Oh, fuck off. I thank you plenty. Besides that, aren’t you getting rewarded for helping me?
“And you ruined the moment. That is just like you.”
They talked for a bit longer, mostly throwing friendly jabs at each other, before the wave finally came to an end. Jay never thought he would be able to say it, but despite being covered in blood, oil, and guts, the day had been oddly relaxing. He went through his notifications. He had only gained a few levels in the skills that hadn’t hit Level 14 yet, and the others still hadn’t moved. He could understand what Lan meant when she talked about Level 15 being harder now. A whole day of fighting, and not a single one had passed that threshold. There was another notification that had brought some good news, though.
