Chapter 36

By the time they finished breakfast, packed their things and got on the road, it was almost noon. It took about an hour for them to reach a paved road, and it was late in the afternoon before Corey turned west onto Hwy 380 towards New Mexico.

Teri and Xeke were asleep in the back, and Ruddy was snoring in the passenger seat. Corey felt Eliza’s familiar touch and opened his mind.

You’re sure it has to be California? he said. We’ll be lucky if we make it halfway there without getting into trouble. Why can’t we meet you in Atlanta?

It’s not going to be safe here much longer, Eliza said. We’re getting ready to move.

  It’s that bad already?

I’m afraid so. DSSA is turning over every rock looking for those three. The Eagle is actively searching for them. Events become much more difficult to predict when a talent of that magnitude is involved.

A chill ran down Corey’s spine. Surely the Eagle has better things to do than chase a few talents, even major ones.

Julie Hawkins is terrified, and the Eagle is listening to her. They’ve been dreading an uncontrolled mentalist as strong as Teri since the Event. Now they’ve found one … and she’s backed by two of the strongest physical talents they’ve ever seen.

What about the people chasing Ruddy? Corey said. That changeling—the one that called himself the Scourge. I don’t think he was with the government.

No, he wasn’t. These are the other players I’ve mentioned to you.

And you’re still not going to tell me any more about them. Am I right?

The more you know, the more at risk you are of drawing their attention. You’re going to have to trust me.

So everyone’s after these kids and I can’t count on any support. How am I supposed to make it across the country with them?

  Carefully.

That’s it? That’s all the advice you have?

I’m afraid so, Corey. Once you get them to Santa Cruz things will become clearer.

Great. He reached down and adjusted the seat. Remind me to ask for a raise next time I see you.
