Abort! Abort!

Lester ran outside, looking everywhere. He found Bonita, sleeping soundly on the ground, outside the home of the voles. Lester tried to wake her up, to no avail. He got an idea. Lester grabbed Bonita’s hind legs, hoping she would not kick him and started dragging her back to the burrow. It took him an hour, but he managed to get her back into the burrow and back into bed. Lester gratefully fell into bed and fell asleep, knowing he only had an hour before he had to report to work.

The orange rabbit got up and slowly put on his rainbow clothes, looking longingly at his lovely wife sleeping peacefully and wishing he was her. Oh, what he would give for a few more winks of sleep. Lester walked to work in a daze, wondering what Nogdorf would teach him today.  All of a sudden his breath was taken away, as he flew up in the air and was hanging upside down. He started screeching, waking up the dark creatures and causing Nogdorf to run along the trail, which he had not done in years. Sneaky crawled out of his warm hiding place and started the ascent into the tree. Corrigan looked up into the tree at JJ and the slow snake. Bobby Bear walked over to Corrigan and asked, “What do I do now, boss? The first plan worked and mine was the second plan. I didn't get to do anything but hide.”

Corrigan said, “You can go on home; we have this under control.” Just then, a gunshot rang out and a bullet hit right beside Corrigan. “Aarg, that almost hit me. We can’t fight bullets. Sneaky, abort. Abort.” Corrigan ran like the wind, Bobby Bear continued lumbering along and Sneaky looked at what was going on around him and climbed back down the tree, only to face a pair of boots.

Nogdorf said, menacingly, “You were warned, snake. This time I will use my alternate wizard’s staff on you, as promised.

Sneaky tried getting away, but Nogdorf was quicker. He shot the snake dead in his slime trail. Nogdorf walked back over to where Lester was hanging upside down and set to work, cutting him down. “Well, the war has begun in earnest, Lester. You are going to have to be on high alert all of the time, now.

Lester was just glad to be down out of the tree. He related to Nogdorf what had happened since the night before. Nogdorf said, “I have just about narrowed down the cure for your wife. It won’t be ready tonight, though. I suggest you give her both of the cookies before bed and let’s hope increasing the dose will work tonight. You do need to get a good night’s sleep, especially since you need to be very alert to the dark creatures’ attacks. I have a question I would like you to ask your wife. I want you to find out if she remembers her midnight jaunts and killing the mice. I suggest you do it in a round about way instead of directly. Something like asking her if she has seen all of the dead mice laying around in the mornings.”

“I have a hunch that she doesn’t even know she is going out at night. If my hunch is right we will need to treat her differently than we would otherwise. I know you rabbits are always in a hurry, but go slowly with your questions and I believe you will find out more useful knowledge that way,” Nogdorf explained to JJ.

Lester felt distracted that day, during his lessons. He went back and forth from the dark creatures’ attacks to Bonita’s needed treatment, wondering if the cookies would keep his wife asleep this night or if there would be more murders at the hand of his wife.
