"A dragon that breathes fire…" he muttered. "I need more than just sharp sticks and recycled monsters."
The Akashic Record chimed in, voice cold and amused. "Courage burns quicker than kindling. You’ll need bone, planning, and maybe a bit of divine loophole abuse."
Nolan moved with purpose now. No longer scavenging randomly, he was hunting. Beast leather, bone fragments, elemental sap, and mana crystals—every resource had a purpose. As he worked the old femur from a mummified monster skeleton, he paused.
"Why do monsters have stronger bones than men?"
"Because they sacrifice themselves," the Record replied. "Their cores absorb ambient mana. Pain and instinct do what no spell can: they refine their body. Their bones are forged by desperation."
Nolan gave a half-smile. "So monsters grind themselves down to get stronger… Just like me."
By midday, Nolan sat surrounded by piles of discarded, brittle bone cards. He fed them into the system—sacrifices for knowledge. The Akashic Record obliged.
"Advanced runes unlocked."
Information flooded his mind like compressed code.
"Runes are ideograms. No wiggle room. No poetry. Mana must flow through them like rivers carved into bedrock. Miswrite a rune and your ‘sharp sword’ becomes a ‘soft pillow.’"
"And if I get it right?"
"Even gods flinch."
The Record continued. "Humans scaled magic by embedding runes into parchment—scrolls. But the real power is locked away by the system, hoarded by nobles and the Academy. You now have access to fragments of that vault."
He pulled out what remained of his deck.
It was a mess.
Too many redundant tools. Too little synergy. He wasn’t a brute. He wasn’t a mage.
He was a strategist.
"Every card must have a reason to die," he said aloud. "Play, sacrifice, banish, return. Nothing else matters."
"That’s more logic than half the noble card architects ever managed," the Record muttered.
The cave became his forge.
Nolan crafted two Bone Pile cards—search cards, inscribed with a recursive rune that allowed him to pull any Bone, Artifact, or Ceremonial card from the deck into his hand. Only one could be used per turn. Just enough.
Next came his Ceremonial Daggers. Simple bone blades, etched with twin runes: Sharpness and Structure. Upon stabbing a target, each would trigger a Ceremony Effect—the true strength of the deck. Each dagger, once used or broken, could be sacrificed to generate 1 Bone Token, a consumable currency for powering stronger effects.
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
He created three Bone Sacrifice cards—efficient recyclers. If Nolan held five cards in hand, he could return a card from the graveyard or shuffle one into the deck. Cost: 1 Bone Token.
Then came the more esoteric entries.
Resentment from the Dead — a scroll parchment crafted from beast leather, layered with powdered bone and a rune carved in grief. When used, Nolan would receive a counter-based damage boost, his strikes feeding on pain. It was a one-use buff—banished upon activation—but deadly in the right moment.
Whisper of the Wisp — a card crafted with the essence of flame magic. Activated only after a card had been sacrificed or via ceremonial effect, it summoned a minor fire spirit to imbue his next weapon with burning power.
And then, A Cat’s Extra Life. A relic: the claw of a feline beast, its resentment crystallized through sacrificial inscription. When activated, it granted Nolan one revival—enough to survive a fatal blow. It could be banished for passive use or used with a token to trigger its effect.
He reinforced defense with Ceremonial Bone Shields, heavy slabs of carved ribbone and spell-treated hide. If sacrificed, they would gain a Reflect effect, bouncing back 25% of damage. If banished, they’d prevent the next critical hit outright.
For endurance, he inscribed Benefits of the Ancestors. Spending a single Bone Token would restore 20 mana. Spending three granted 50. Banishing the card offered brief immunity to magical fatigue.
The final masterpiece: Return of the Undying One. Born from trial and error, inscribed in blood and bone dust. By sacrificing 2 Bone Tokens, Nolan could retrieve one banished card and return it to the graveyard. With a fire wisp active, it also granted an extra draw.
“This isn’t a deck,” he murmured. “It’s a skeleton. Cards are ribs. Tokens are blood. Banishment is marrow.”
"Just don’t forget the spine," the Record warned. "Otherwise, the first breath of fire ends your philosophy."
Later that night, Nolan stared into the fire.
"What are the rules for facing her?"
"Reach the bottom. The Page of Chaos binds the dragon to the dungeon. Divine law forces her to duel you. She can’t refuse."
"She used to be the protagonist, didn’t she?"
"Yes. The goddess made her to be the heart of a world. When that world collapsed, this dungeon is what remained. She clings to the Page. She thinks it’s divine. And maybe it is."
"If I destroy it… will she be free?"
"Only if she lets you. If not, she’ll fight to keep it."
"Then maybe I can rewrite her story too."
"That’s one way to end it. An unwelcome editor."
He had one final question.
"Aura blades. Chi strikes. Can I really not do it without a card?"
"No. You already know why. Skills are bound by the rules. The soul can only hold five cards. Each card is a fragment of chaos. To use more, you’d collapse. The only way is to write it—onto a Skill Card."
"So if I want my blade to burn, I don’t swing it—I describe it."
"Exactly. This world is bound by narrative. The system is your pen."
By dawn, his deck was refined:

He placed the deck against his chest.
