the night does not last forever

The live broadcast begins with a long emergency tone as the current program is interrupted. Even Popular streaming services show it. The kind of sound that many older people still know from the cold war and the times after. The Tone flickers in to a low static as the the GDN insignia comes on screen. Then a voice is audible. Exhausted, but steady and clear. Her french accent is toned down to a minimum but still shines through “This is the Global Defence Network on all available European emergency channels. My name is Amélie Lefevre and this is an official broadcast for all remaining civilians across the European continent”

the visual cuts to maps, live feeds. Dark citys seen from drones and satellites.

“At 2300 hours last night, a coordinated offensive under the Crimson Concord breached containment lines across Italy, France and Spain. Network forces in Florence, Lyon and Madrid have suffered heavy losses. The Civilian evacuation in these regions is no longer possible” She pauses, her hands shaking as she takes a calming breath. “The GDN in conjunction with the NATO has officially declared central France, Southern Germany, Poland, Switzerland, northern Italy and the Iberian Peninsula as Black Zones. All remaining Network personal are ordered to withdraw to defensible southern and eastern sectors.”

A map overlay fills the screen. Europe separated in Red Black and Blue Zones.

  “Confirmed safe regions include:

  — Berlin and the surrounding German Protectorate.

  — Slovakia and the Trans-Carpathian corridor.

  — Select urban zones under Network control in Poland, Czechia, and southern Austria.

Those Blue zones are declared Safe and several evacuation points for the civilian population have been established.”

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Stock footage shows Refugee convoys entering berlin through checkpoints. Network personal taking their time to inspect each vehicle for threats. “Citizens currently residing in Blue Zones are instructed to remain indoors during curfew and to report all unexpected disappearances or sightings immediately.

Civilians in Red or Black Zones remember: Do not travel at night. Do not follow unverified evacuation orders. Stay near running water and avoid underground areas like cellars and underground transit lines.”

there is a commotion in the news room outside of the camera frame. Amélie listens to something in her ear piece as she gets paler as she whispers “i have family in...” she snaps herself out of the thought clearly ringing with her composure “We... just revived another update.” she says with a shaking voice. “Madrid has fallen, L... Lyon has gone dark. Survivors report organised forces of the Crimson Concord and unknown human collaborators. Paris remains contested. Heavy Fighting continues along the Seine, with NATO aerial support evacuating civilians from the Montparasse sector” she continues, her voice shaking now as tears start to run down her face.

For a moment the sound cuts out and the image is overlayed with the map again. Then the bild is back in to the news room. An older man with olive skin, black hair and a stubble is just sitting down and fixing the microphone a quiet choked sob audible somewhere of screen “please excuse the interruption” he says as his dark eyes fix on the camera “We ask all listeners in Network controlled regions do remain calm, follow Directives and verified evacuation orders. The network will maintain operations for as long as possible.” he glances to the side where faint noise is still audible, his eyes heavy.

“if you are alone... if you are frightened... remember that the night does not last Forever. We will endure. Together.”

The visual cuts to the GDN Logo again. Ending the broadcast
