Chapter 89: Meeting With Takao

  December 4th, 2024

The midday sun filtered through the school windows, casting warm rectangles of light across the empty hallway where Fumiko and Rei stood. Most students had already headed to the cafeteria for lunch, leaving them in a rare moment of privacy.

"Rei," Fumiko said, her voice carrying its usual composed confidence. "I wanted to let you know my mother spoke with Takao. He said he's able to meet with you this afternoon, if that works."

Rei's normally expressionless face softened slightly, a faint smile appearing. "That would be perfect," he replied, relief evident in his voice despite his effort to conceal it. After weeks of searching for answers, the prospect of finally meeting someone who might provide them felt like a weight lifting from his shoulders.

"She seemed surprised he agreed so readily," Fumiko added, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Apparently high-ranking officials don't typically make time for rookie heroes."

"Thank you, Fumiko. I appreciate your help with this." Rei's gratitude was genuine, something that would have been difficult for him to express just a few months ago.

Fumiko nodded, a small smile playing at her lips. "Whatever you're looking for, I hope you find it."

As Rei left school that afternoon, walking toward the Academy, his steps carried a new purpose. The usual city noise faded into the background as his thoughts turned inward, anticipation building with each step.

Then, without warning, his mental landscape shifted. The familiar blue door creaked open, and there stood Hikito, chains still binding his arms as he leaned against the doorframe. His piercing blue eyes fixed on Rei with unsettling intensity.

"What do you want now?" Rei asked irritably, in no mood for his inner demon's games.

"I just want to see what this 'Takao' truly knows," Hikito replied, lips curving into a smirk. "That message about meeting him, I could assume it is from Haikito... that damned man."

Rei looked at Hikito, confusion replacing his annoyance. "How are you familiar with Haikito?"

Hikito let out a faint chuckle, the sound echoing unnaturally in the mental space. "Like you've said, brother. I let on more than you know. Haikito is connected between us two, whether by fate... or his twisted version of destiny. Regardless, that man is a nuisance that needs to be dealt with."

Hikito began to walk back toward his blue-eyed door, chains rattling with each step. "I'll be watching, brother. I just hope you're ready."

Back in reality, Rei scoffed, shaking off the encounter. But his heart had begun to race, Hikito's words echoing in his mind. 'Haikito is connected between us two?' The implications were disturbing, adding another layer to the mystery surrounding his existence.

The Academy grounds were unusually quiet as Rei entered through the main gates. The training grounds, normally filled with heroes practicing their concepts or sparring, lay empty and still. The silence felt unnatural, almost oppressive.

Rei paused by the job board, another anomaly catching his attention. Where the board was typically filled with assignments of various difficulties, now only a handful of green-tier jobs remained—simple tasks hardly worth the time of a seasoned hero.

'Where is everyone?' he wondered, the emptiness reinforcing his sense that something significant was happening beyond his awareness.

As Rei continued walking, heading upstairs to the official level, he spotted Takao standing in the corridor. The elderly official's posture was straight despite his age, dignity radiating from him with each careful movement.

"Young Rei, it's a pleasure," Takao said, his voice low and measured. "Room 418A. I'll be waiting."

With that brief exchange, Takao disappeared around a corner, leaving Rei to make his way to the designated meeting place.

The elevator doors opened onto the fourth floor, revealing a hallway far more luxurious than the Academy's public areas. Ornate paintings lined the walls, interspersed with statues of heroes from ages past. The carpet beneath Rei's feet was thick and plush, muffling his footsteps as he walked toward room 418A.

Rei knocked, heart pounding with anticipation.

"Enter," came Takao's voice from within.

The office was spacious yet cozy, lined with bookshelves filled with ancient tomes. A large window offered a panoramic view of Osaka, the city sprawling beneath the afternoon sun. Takao sat behind a polished wooden desk, his weathered hands folded neatly before him.

"Please, sit," Takao said, gesturing to the chair opposite him. "Now, have a seat, young Rei. Haikito has told me about your arrival, and I expected us to talk. Although under these conditions it's rather unsettling, I hope we can skip some of the formalities."

Rei's brow furrowed as he took the offered seat. "What do you mean 'under these conditions'? Is something going on, Mr. Takao?"

"Yes, and no," Takao replied cryptically. "Normally I enjoy talking to young heroes and seeing what inspires them to risk their lives for our country. The youth inspire me to continue what I love: train, teach, and develop. At the top of the rankings, I get so detached from that, but every now and again, I get to talk to a young hero. The circumstances are different with you, Rei. Haikito expects a lot from you, to include me as well to guide the Academy in his departure."

  'Haikito's gone again?' Rei thought.

'Of course he is. That damned Haikito, I tell you,' Hikito's voice echoed in Rei's mind.

"Now, onward to our conversation," Takao continued. "Haikito mentioned there might be some questions you have for him. I know I'm not him, but Haikito has given me a good baseline of who and what you are, Rei. Although I have to say, I am puzzled myself. But," Takao paused, letting the sentence hang in the air, "I want to confirm these things he says. The floor is yours, young Rei."

Rei gathered his thoughts, unsure where to begin. What did Takao know? How much had Haikito revealed? More importantly, how did Haikito know what questions Rei would ask?

"A vessel?" Rei finally began, the word feeling strange on his tongue. "What does this even mean? Everyone has been referring to me as that—Mr. Haikito, Kage, Ryuu, and even Mrs. Inosuke... What does this mean?"

Takao leaned forward in his chair, his expression growing grave as he considered how to respond. The words Haikito had left him were stark but very blunt. With a final sigh, Takao spoke.

"I understand your confusion, Rei. Many have heard the term 'Vessel' but few comprehend its true meaning."

He steepled his fingers, choosing his words carefully. "Vessels are not simply hosts—they are extensions of Lucifer himself. There are two paths to becoming a Vessel, both equally binding."

Takao's eyes reflected decades of knowledge, perhaps centuries of Academy secrets. "Some are damned to this fate. A grave sin, a moment of weakness when one's soul is vulnerable, or even a curse passed through bloodlines. These unfortunate souls become unwilling hosts, fighting Lucifer's influence until they inevitably succumb."

His voice lowered slightly, as if concerned about being overheard despite the privacy of his office. "Others choose this path willingly. They pledge themselves to Lucifer, offering their bodies and souls in exchange for power. Throughout history, desperate individuals have performed rituals beneath the full moon, where Lucifer's influence is strongest, begging for his favor."

Rei listened intently, each word adding another piece to the puzzle of his existence.

"Ancient texts speak of Lucifer residing within the moon after his fall, watching humanity from afar. This is why lunar cycles have long been associated with sorcery," Takao continued. "During the full moon, the veil between our world and his prison thins. That's when his whispers are most clearly heard by those attuned to his presence."

Takao folded his hands on the desk. "What makes Vessels truly extraordinary is Lucifer's ability to draw out the full potential of their concept. Abilities that would take decades to master come naturally. Powers that would be impossible for ordinary sorcerers become effortless. Lucifer's touch enhances the concept to heights beyond human understanding."

Rei's unease grew with each revelation. "But I never pledged loyalty to anyone. I don't remember committing any sin worthy of this fate."

Takao's expression softened slightly. "That is what makes you unique, Rei. Haikito believes you are not just any Vessel. You may be the final Vessel—the one prophesied to either grant Lucifer his return... or be his ultimate prison."

Rei's confusion turned to frustration. "You still haven't explained what this means for me. What happens to Vessels? What happens to their souls?"

"Typically, the human consciousness is gradually consumed," Takao replied, his voice grim. "Lucifer's influence grows until nothing of the original person remains—just a shell perfectly shaped to hold his essence. But the process can be resisted. The stronger your will, the more of yourself you can preserve. That's why your training with Ryuu and Kage is so crucial."

Rei's hands began to tremble slightly as the implications sank in. Hikito's voice whispered in his mind: "He speaks half-truths, brother. There is more to our story than this old man knows."

Takao observed Rei's reaction carefully. "I can see you're processing this. Perhaps now you understand why Haikito has taken such interest in you. Why the Underworld hunts you. Why Mrs. Inosuke feared you. A Vessel is both weapon and weakness—the key to Lucifer's return, and potentially, his final defeat."

"You mentioned extraordinary abilities over their concept," Rei said, trying to process everything Takao had revealed, "but I don't even know mine, Mr. Takao."

"Ahh, Haikito mentioned such a thing." Takao's interest visibly increased. "Stand up, Rei."

Takao rose from his chair, and immediately the atmosphere in the room changed. A strong pressure began to emit from the elderly official's presence, an aura that belied his age and formal demeanor.

'This aura... this old man is no slouch!' Rei thought to himself, suddenly understanding why Takao was so respected even by someone like Shoto.

The air thickened, making it difficult to breathe. Rei struggled to remain standing as the pressure intensified. A triquetra symbol formed in both of Takao's eyes, glowing with ancient power.

"Yes, young Rei, you feel this pressure?" Takao's voice remained calm despite the overwhelming force he was emitting. "Show me those eyes you have... show me the innards of the voices in your mind that Haikito told me about."

The pressure increased further, a dangerous, almost bloodthirsty aura now emanating from the elderly official. Every instinct in Rei's body screamed at him to run, but he stood his ground. His eyes began to flicker red, fangs appearing in his mouth, claws extending from his fingers in a show of force—his body responding to the threat even as his mind struggled to understand.

"Yes, make those eyes your own, Rei," Takao said, his voice carrying approval despite the challenge. "I'll show you."
