Oath of Defiance 2

The courtyard of the Heavenly Demon Sect was soaked in moonlight—pale, cold, and cruel. Thousands of young cultivators stood in lines stretching across the obsidian square. The air itself reeked of killing intent, excitement, and pride.

Elder Wu stood above them on a black jade platform, arms folded behind his back. His laughter was deep, echoing through the valley like thunder.

“Welcome, worms and future demons! From this moment onward, you are no longer children of the mortal world. You stand before the gates of damnation and glory! Those who fear death… leave now.”

  No one moved.

Elder Wu’s grin widened. “Good. Then listen well—the Heavenly Demon Sect recognizes only one rule: strength. If you desire something, take it. If someone blocks your path, kill them. If you wish to survive, become the blade sharper than all others. That is the way of demons!”

As he spoke, scarlet energy surged through the arena, activating formation pillars that surrounded the candidates. The ground trembled—stone cracked—and from the darkness below, monstrous shapes began to rise.

  “Begin the test.”

Dozens of obsidian beasts, each forged from demonic Qi, lunged forward. They were test constructs—beasts that could tear Foundation cultivators apart. The moment they appeared, chaos erupted.

Jin Valentine didn’t move immediately. He watched the others. Some screamed, some charged with desperate bravery, others turned their blades on their own allies.

He sighed softly. So this is what passes for demons now? Rabid dogs.

When the first beast came for him, he simply raised a hand.

His veins glowed faintly, the golden lines of his former Dao sparking to life once more. The Heavenly System pulsed in his mind.

Golden circuits shimmered across his arm. When the beast struck, Jin moved—one elegant motion, almost lazy. His hand pierced through the creature’s chest, and flames erupted like molten flowers blooming from within.

In seconds, the beast was ash.

Nearby disciples froze. The calmness in his movements, the arrogant ease—it didn’t match his supposed realm.

  Jin smirked. “Pathetic.”

Around him, other strong individuals revealed themselves—a silver-haired woman wielding twin blades of frost; a massive man whose Qi formed a dragon behind him; a blind youth manipulating sound to tear enemies apart. The sect drew monsters from every corner of Ether, and this was only the first test.

When the dust settled, less than a hundred remained.

Elder Wu clapped once, his aura suppressing the rest. “Enough! Those still standing have passed the first gate. Now—swear your Oath of Defiance.”

Jin’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Oath of Defiance?”

Elder Wu’s smile held something ancient and cruel. “It is the vow that severs you from Heaven’s grace. You will no longer bow to gods, fate, or righteousness. You will walk the path of rebellion against all order. That is what it means to be a demon.”

One by one, the survivors stepped into a blood circle and made their oath. Most trembled as the crimson flame touched their souls. Jin stepped forward last.

He placed his hand over his chest, and the entire sect seemed to still. His voice carried across the arena—calm, proud, resolute.

“I, Jin Valentine, renounce the false heavens. I bow to no god, kneel to no will. Let pride be my law, defiance my creed. Should the skies fall, I will raise them again beneath my name.”

The crimson flame roared upward, turning gold for the briefest instant.

  Elder Wu’s eyes widened. “Golden flame…? Impossible…”

The Heavenly System whispered in Jin’s mind.

The entire arena seemed to shiver under the sudden weight of his presence. Those nearest him instinctively stepped back. Even Elder Wu, that ancient monster, couldn’t quite hide the spark of intrigue in his eyes.

“Interesting,” he muttered. “It seems the Sect has found its next storm.”

Within hours, the survivors were processed. Jin was assigned quarters in the inner disciple mountain—a quiet peak overlooking the Valley of Sins. There, he stood alone beneath the stars, feeling the pulse of power running through him. The Heavenly Overlord Art—something forbidden, divine, and perfectly suited to him.

In the distance, bells rang through the sect. The night meeting had begun.

In the grand Demon Hall, the air was thick with power. The Heavenly Demon Lord, draped in crimson and black, sat upon his throne. Around him stood the Ten Heavenly Guards, Elder Wu, the Vice Leader, and six of his children—four sons, two daughters—all radiating monstrous strength.

“The new blood has been tested,” said the Vice Leader, bowing slightly. “Elder Wu reports one promising seed—Jin Valentine. Late Foundation Realm. Survived the Oath with golden flame resonance.”

  Murmurs filled the hall.

The eldest son smirked. “Another arrogant insect. Let’s see how long he survives.”

The second daughter laughed softly, brushing silver hair from her eyes. “If he truly touched the Overlord Flame, he won’t die easily, brother.”

The Heavenly Demon Lord, silent all this time, finally spoke. His voice was deep, heavy enough to make the walls tremble.

“Bring him before me when the War of Heirs begins. I wish to see if pride alone can shake the heavens.”

Elder Wu bowed. “As you command, my Lord.”

That night, as the sect drowned in whispers, Jin sat alone in his quarters. The moon cast a pale glow across his face.

  He smiled faintly.

“So, this is the path of demons. Perfect.”

The flames of his oath danced in his eyes—gold and crimson intertwined.

He leaned back, gazing at the endless night sky.

“Let the heirs fight for their father’s throne,” he murmured. “I will take the heavens instead.”

The wind howled outside, carrying the sound of distant drums and dying stars.

Ether had gained a new demon—one who would never kneel.
